Surah At-Tawbah in English: word by word, transliteration

بَرَآءَةٌ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦٓ إِلَى ٱلَّذِينَ عَـٰهَدتُّم مِّنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ

Transliteration barāatun mina l-lahi warasūlihi ilā alladhīna ʿāhadttum mina l-mush'rikīna

English [This is a declaration of] disassociation, from Allāh and His Messenger, to those with whom you had made a treaty among the polytheists.

1. بَرَآءَةٌۭbarāatunFreedom from obligations
2. مِّنَminafrom
3. ٱللَّهِl-lahiAllah
4. وَرَسُولِهِۦٓwarasūlihiand His Messenger
5. إِلَىilāto
6. ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose (with) whom
7. عَـٰهَدتُّمʿāhadttumyou made a covenant
8. مِّنَminafrom
9. ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَl-mush'rikīnathe polytheists

فَسِيحُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّكُمْ غَيْرُ مُعْجِزِى ٱللَّهِ ۙ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ مُخْزِى ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

Transliteration fasīḥū fī l-arḍi arbaʿata ashhurin wa-iʿ'lamū annakum ghayru muʿ'jizī l-lahi wa-anna l-laha mukh'zī l-kāfirīna

English So travel freely, [O disbelievers], throughout the land [during] four months but know that you cannot cause failure to Allāh and that Allāh will disgrace the disbelievers.

1. فَسِيحُوا۟fasīḥūSo move about
2. فِىfīin
3. ٱلْأَرْضِl-arḍithe land
4. أَرْبَعَةَarbaʿata(during) four
5. أَشْهُرٍۢashhurinmonths
6. وَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟wa-iʿ'lamūbut know
7. أَنَّكُمْannakumthat you
8. غَيْرُghayru(can) not
9. مُعْجِزِىmuʿ'jizīescape
10. ٱللَّهِ ۙl-lahiAllah
11. وَأَنَّwa-annaand that
12. ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
13. مُخْزِىmukh'zī(is) the One Who (will) disgrace
14. ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَl-kāfirīnathe disbelievers

وَأَذَٰنٌ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦٓ إِلَى ٱلنَّاسِ يَوْمَ ٱلْحَجِّ ٱلْأَكْبَرِ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ بَرِىٓءٌ مِّنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ ۙ وَرَسُولُهُۥ ۚ فَإِن تُبْتُمْ فَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ ۖ وَإِن تَوَلَّيْتُمْ فَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّكُمْ غَيْرُ مُعْجِزِى ٱللَّهِ ۗ وَبَشِّرِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ

Transliteration wa-adhānun mina l-lahi warasūlihi ilā l-nāsi yawma l-ḥaji l-akbari anna l-laha barīon mina l-mush'rikīna warasūluhu fa-in tub'tum fahuwa khayrun lakum wa-in tawallaytum fa-iʿ'lamū annakum ghayru muʿ'jizī l-lahi wabashiri alladhīna kafarū biʿadhābin alīmin

English And [it is] an announcement from Allāh and His Messenger to the people on the day of the greater pilgrimage that Allāh is disassociated from the disbelievers, and [so is] His Messenger. So if you repent, that is best for you; but if you turn away - then know that you will not cause failure to Allāh. And give tidings to those who disbelieve of a painful punishment.

1. وَأَذَٰنٌۭwa-adhānunAnd an announcement
2. مِّنَminafrom Allah
3. ٱللَّهِl-lahifrom Allah
4. وَرَسُولِهِۦٓwarasūlihiand His Messenger
5. إِلَىilāto
6. ٱلنَّاسِl-nāsithe people
7. يَوْمَyawma(on the) day
8. ٱلْحَجِّl-ḥaji(of) the greater Pilgrimage
9. ٱلْأَكْبَرِl-akbari(of) the greater Pilgrimage
10. أَنَّannathat
11. ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
12. بَرِىٓءٌۭbarīon(is) free from obligations
13. مِّنَmina[of]
14. ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ ۙl-mush'rikīna(to) the polytheists
15. وَرَسُولُهُۥ ۚwarasūluhuand (so is) His Messenger
16. فَإِنfa-inSo if
17. تُبْتُمْtub'tumyou repent
18. فَهُوَfahuwathen, it is
19. خَيْرٌۭkhayrunbest
20. لَّكُمْ ۖlakumfor you
21. وَإِنwa-inBut if
22. تَوَلَّيْتُمْtawallaytumyou turn away
23. فَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟fa-iʿ'lamūthen know
24. أَنَّكُمْannakumthat you
25. غَيْرُghayru(can) not
26. مُعْجِزِىmuʿ'jizīescape
27. ٱللَّهِ ۗl-lahiAllah
28. وَبَشِّرِwabashiriAnd give glad tidings
29. ٱلَّذِينَalladhīna(to) those who
30. كَفَرُوا۟kafarūdisbelieve
31. بِعَذَابٍbiʿadhābinof a punishment
32. أَلِيمٍalīminpainful

إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ عَـٰهَدتُّم مِّنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَنقُصُوكُمْ شَيْـًٔا وَلَمْ يُظَـٰهِرُوا۟ عَلَيْكُمْ أَحَدًا فَأَتِمُّوٓا۟ إِلَيْهِمْ عَهْدَهُمْ إِلَىٰ مُدَّتِهِمْ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُحِبُّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ

Transliteration illā alladhīna ʿāhadttum mina l-mush'rikīna thumma lam yanquṣūkum shayan walam yuẓāhirū ʿalaykum aḥadan fa-atimmū ilayhim ʿahdahum ilā muddatihim inna l-laha yuḥibbu l-mutaqīna

English Excepted are those with whom you made a treaty among the polytheists and then they have not been deficient toward you in anything or supported anyone against you; so complete for them their treaty until their term [has ended]. Indeed, Allāh loves the righteous [who fear Him].

1. إِلَّاillāExcept
2. ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose (with) whom
3. عَـٰهَدتُّمʿāhadttumyou have a covenant
4. مِّنَminaamong
5. ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَl-mush'rikīnathe polytheists
6. ثُمَّthummathen
7. لَمْlamnot
8. يَنقُصُوكُمْyanquṣūkumthey have failed you
9. شَيْـًۭٔاshayan(in any) thing
10. وَلَمْwalamand not
11. يُظَـٰهِرُوا۟yuẓāhirūthey have supported
12. عَلَيْكُمْʿalaykumagainst you
13. أَحَدًۭاaḥadananyone
14. فَأَتِمُّوٓا۟fa-atimmūso fulfil
15. إِلَيْهِمْilayhimto them
16. عَهْدَهُمْʿahdahumtheir treaty
17. إِلَىٰilātill
18. مُدَّتِهِمْ ۚmuddatihimtheir term
19. إِنَّinnaIndeed
20. ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
21. يُحِبُّyuḥibbuloves
22. ٱلْمُتَّقِينَl-mutaqīnathe righteous

فَإِذَا ٱنسَلَخَ ٱلْأَشْهُرُ ٱلْحُرُمُ فَٱقْتُلُوا۟ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ حَيْثُ وَجَدتُّمُوهُمْ وَخُذُوهُمْ وَٱحْصُرُوهُمْ وَٱقْعُدُوا۟ لَهُمْ كُلَّ مَرْصَدٍ ۚ فَإِن تَابُوا۟ وَأَقَامُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتَوُا۟ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ فَخَلُّوا۟ سَبِيلَهُمْ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ

Transliteration fa-idhā insalakha l-ashhuru l-ḥurumu fa-uq'tulū l-mush'rikīna ḥaythu wajadttumūhum wakhudhūhum wa-uḥ'ṣurūhum wa-uq'ʿudū lahum kulla marṣadin fa-in tābū wa-aqāmū l-ṣalata waātawū l-zakata fakhallū sabīlahum inna l-laha ghafūrun raḥīmun

English And when the inviolable months have passed, then kill the polytheists wherever you find them and capture them and besiege them and sit in wait for them at every place of ambush. But if they should repent, establish prayer, and give zakāh, let them [go] on their way. Indeed, Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.

1. فَإِذَاfa-idhāThen when
2. ٱنسَلَخَinsalakhahave passed
3. ٱلْأَشْهُرُl-ashhuruthe sacred months
4. ٱلْحُرُمُl-ḥurumuthe sacred months
5. فَٱقْتُلُوا۟fa-uq'tulūthen kill
6. ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَl-mush'rikīnathe polytheists
7. حَيْثُḥaythuwherever
8. وَجَدتُّمُوهُمْwajadttumūhumyou find them
9. وَخُذُوهُمْwakhudhūhumand seize them
10. وَٱحْصُرُوهُمْwa-uḥ'ṣurūhumand besiege them
11. وَٱقْعُدُوا۟wa-uq'ʿudūand sit (in wait)
12. لَهُمْlahumfor them
13. كُلَّkulla(at) every
14. مَرْصَدٍۢ ۚmarṣadinplace of ambush
15. فَإِنfa-inBut if
16. تَابُوا۟tābūthey repent
17. وَأَقَامُوا۟wa-aqāmūand establish
18. ٱلصَّلَوٰةَl-ṣalatathe prayer
19. وَءَاتَوُا۟waātawūand give
20. ٱلزَّكَوٰةَl-zakatathe zakah
21. فَخَلُّوا۟fakhallūthen leave
22. سَبِيلَهُمْ ۚsabīlahumtheir way
23. إِنَّinnaIndeed
24. ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
25. غَفُورٌۭghafūrun(is) Oft-Forgiving
26. رَّحِيمٌۭraḥīmunMost Merciful

وَإِنْ أَحَدٌ مِّنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ ٱسْتَجَارَكَ فَأَجِرْهُ حَتَّىٰ يَسْمَعَ كَلَـٰمَ ٱللَّهِ ثُمَّ أَبْلِغْهُ مَأْمَنَهُۥ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ قَوْمٌ لَّا يَعْلَمُونَ

Transliteration wa-in aḥadun mina l-mush'rikīna is'tajāraka fa-ajir'hu ḥattā yasmaʿa kalāma l-lahi thumma abligh'hu mamanahu dhālika bi-annahum qawmun lā yaʿlamūna

English And if any one of the polytheists seeks your protection, then grant him protection so that he may hear the words of Allāh [i.e., the Qur’ān]. Then deliver him to his place of safety. That is because they are a people who do not know.

1. وَإِنْwa-inAnd if
2. أَحَدٌۭaḥadunanyone
3. مِّنَminaof
4. ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَl-mush'rikīnathe polytheists
5. ٱسْتَجَارَكَis'tajārakaseek your protection
6. فَأَجِرْهُfa-ajir'huthen grant him protection
7. حَتَّىٰḥattāuntil
8. يَسْمَعَyasmaʿahe hears
9. كَلَـٰمَkalāma(the) Words of Allah
10. ٱللَّهِl-lahi(the) Words of Allah
11. ثُمَّthummaThen
12. أَبْلِغْهُabligh'huescort him
13. مَأْمَنَهُۥ ۚmamanahu(to) his place of safety
14. ذَٰلِكَdhālikaThat
15. بِأَنَّهُمْbi-annahum(is) because they
16. قَوْمٌۭqawmun(are) a people
17. لَّاlā(who) do not know
18. يَعْلَمُونَyaʿlamūna(who) do not know

كَيْفَ يَكُونُ لِلْمُشْرِكِينَ عَهْدٌ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ وَعِندَ رَسُولِهِۦٓ إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ عَـٰهَدتُّمْ عِندَ ٱلْمَسْجِدِ ٱلْحَرَامِ ۖ فَمَا ٱسْتَقَـٰمُوا۟ لَكُمْ فَٱسْتَقِيمُوا۟ لَهُمْ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُحِبُّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ

Transliteration kayfa yakūnu lil'mush'rikīna ʿahdun ʿinda l-lahi waʿinda rasūlihi illā alladhīna ʿāhadttum ʿinda l-masjidi l-ḥarāmi famā is'taqāmū lakum fa-is'taqīmū lahum inna l-laha yuḥibbu l-mutaqīna

English How can there be for the polytheists a treaty in the sight of Allāh and with His Messenger, except for those with whom you made a treaty at al-Masjid al-Ḥarām? So as long as they are upright toward you, be upright toward them. Indeed, Allāh loves the righteous [who fear Him].

2. يَكُونُyakūnucan (there) be
3. لِلْمُشْرِكِينَlil'mush'rikīnafor the polytheists
4. عَهْدٌʿahduna covenant
5. عِندَʿindawith
6. ٱللَّهِl-lahiAllah
7. وَعِندَwaʿindaand with
8. رَسُولِهِۦٓrasūlihiHis Messenger
9. إِلَّاillāexcept
10. ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose (with) whom
11. عَـٰهَدتُّمْʿāhadttumyou made a covenant
12. عِندَʿindanear
13. ٱلْمَسْجِدِl-masjidiAl-Masjid
14. ٱلْحَرَامِ ۖl-ḥarāmiAl-Haraam
15. فَمَاfamāSo long as
16. ٱسْتَقَـٰمُوا۟is'taqāmūthey are upright
17. لَكُمْlakumto you
18. فَٱسْتَقِيمُوا۟fa-is'taqīmūthen you be upright
19. لَهُمْ ۚlahumto them
20. إِنَّinnaIndeed
21. ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
22. يُحِبُّyuḥibbuloves
23. ٱلْمُتَّقِينَl-mutaqīnathe righteous

كَيْفَ وَإِن يَظْهَرُوا۟ عَلَيْكُمْ لَا يَرْقُبُوا۟ فِيكُمْ إِلًّا وَلَا ذِمَّةً ۚ يُرْضُونَكُم بِأَفْوَٰهِهِمْ وَتَأْبَىٰ قُلُوبُهُمْ وَأَكْثَرُهُمْ فَـٰسِقُونَ

Transliteration kayfa wa-in yaẓharū ʿalaykum lā yarqubū fīkum illan walā dhimmatan yur'ḍūnakum bi-afwāhihim watabā qulūbuhum wa-aktharuhum fāsiqūna

English How [can there be a treaty] while, if they gain dominance over you, they do not observe concerning you any pact of kinship or covenant of protection? They satisfy you with their mouths, but their hearts refuse [compliance], and most of them are defiantly disobedient.

1. كَيْفَkayfaHow
2. وَإِنwa-inwhile, if
3. يَظْهَرُوا۟yaẓharūthey gain dominance
4. عَلَيْكُمْʿalaykumover you
5. لَاlāthey do not regard (the ties)
6. يَرْقُبُوا۟yarqubūthey do not regard (the ties)
7. فِيكُمْfīkumwith you
8. إِلًّۭاillan(of) kinship
9. وَلَاwalāand not
10. ذِمَّةًۭ ۚdhimmatancovenant of protection
11. يُرْضُونَكُمyur'ḍūnakumThey satisfy you
12. بِأَفْوَٰهِهِمْbi-afwāhihimwith their mouths
13. وَتَأْبَىٰwatabābut refuse
14. قُلُوبُهُمْqulūbuhumtheir hearts
15. وَأَكْثَرُهُمْwa-aktharuhumand most of them
16. فَـٰسِقُونَfāsiqūna(are) defiantly disobedient

ٱشْتَرَوْا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ ثَمَنًا قَلِيلًا فَصَدُّوا۟ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦٓ ۚ إِنَّهُمْ سَآءَ مَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ

Transliteration ish'taraw biāyāti l-lahi thamanan qalīlan faṣaddū ʿan sabīlihi innahum sāa mā kānū yaʿmalūna

English They have exchanged the signs of Allāh for a small price and averted [people] from His way. Indeed, it was evil that they were doing.

1. ٱشْتَرَوْا۟ish'tarawThey exchange
2. بِـَٔايَـٰتِbiāyāti[with] the Verses of Allah
3. ٱللَّهِl-lahi[with] the Verses of Allah
4. ثَمَنًۭاthamanan(for) a little price
5. قَلِيلًۭاqalīlan(for) a little price
6. فَصَدُّوا۟faṣaddūand they hinder (people)
7. عَنʿanfrom
8. سَبِيلِهِۦٓ ۚsabīlihiHis way
9. إِنَّهُمْinnahumIndeed
10. سَآءَsāaevil
11. مَاmā(is) what
12. كَانُوا۟kānūthey used to
13. يَعْمَلُونَyaʿmalūnado

لَا يَرْقُبُونَ فِى مُؤْمِنٍ إِلًّا وَلَا ذِمَّةً ۚ وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْمُعْتَدُونَ

Transliteration lā yarqubūna fī mu'minin illan walā dhimmatan wa-ulāika humu l-muʿ'tadūna

English They do not observe toward a believer any pact of kinship or covenant of protection. And it is they who are the transgressors.

1. لَاlāNot
2. يَرْقُبُونَyarqubūnathey respect (the ties)
3. فِىfītowards
4. مُؤْمِنٍmu'minina believer
5. إِلًّۭاillan(of) kinship
6. وَلَاwalāand not
7. ذِمَّةًۭ ۚdhimmatancovenant of protection
8. وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَwa-ulāikaAnd those
9. هُمُhumu[they]
10. ٱلْمُعْتَدُونَl-muʿ'tadūna(are) the transgressors

فَإِن تَابُوا۟ وَأَقَامُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتَوُا۟ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ فَإِخْوَٰنُكُمْ فِى ٱلدِّينِ ۗ وَنُفَصِّلُ ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ لِقَوْمٍ يَعْلَمُونَ

Transliteration fa-in tābū wa-aqāmū l-ṣalata waātawū l-zakata fa-ikh'wānukum fī l-dīni wanufaṣṣilu l-āyāti liqawmin yaʿlamūna

English But if they repent, establish prayer, and give zakāh, then they are your brothers in religion; and We detail the verses for a people who know.

1. فَإِنfa-inBut if
2. تَابُوا۟tābūthey repent
3. وَأَقَامُوا۟wa-aqāmūand establish
4. ٱلصَّلَوٰةَl-ṣalatathe prayer
5. وَءَاتَوُا۟waātawūand give
6. ٱلزَّكَوٰةَl-zakatathe zakah
7. فَإِخْوَٰنُكُمْfa-ikh'wānukumthen (they are) your brothers
8. فِىfīin
9. ٱلدِّينِ ۗl-dīni[the] religion
10. وَنُفَصِّلُwanufaṣṣiluAnd We explain in detail
11. ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِl-āyātithe Verses
12. لِقَوْمٍۢliqawminfor a people
13. يَعْلَمُونَyaʿlamūna(who) know

وَإِن نَّكَثُوٓا۟ أَيْمَـٰنَهُم مِّنۢ بَعْدِ عَهْدِهِمْ وَطَعَنُوا۟ فِى دِينِكُمْ فَقَـٰتِلُوٓا۟ أَئِمَّةَ ٱلْكُفْرِ ۙ إِنَّهُمْ لَآ أَيْمَـٰنَ لَهُمْ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَنتَهُونَ

Transliteration wa-in nakathū aymānahum min baʿdi ʿahdihim waṭaʿanū fī dīnikum faqātilū a-immata l-kuf'ri innahum lā aymāna lahum laʿallahum yantahūna

English And if they break their oaths after their treaty and defame your religion, then combat the leaders of disbelief, for indeed, there are no oaths [sacred] to them; [fight them that] they might cease.

1. وَإِنwa-inAnd if
2. نَّكَثُوٓا۟nakathūthey break
3. أَيْمَـٰنَهُمaymānahumtheir oaths
4. مِّنۢminafter
5. بَعْدِbaʿdiafter
6. عَهْدِهِمْʿahdihimtheir treaty
7. وَطَعَنُوا۟waṭaʿanūand defame
8. فِىfī[in]
9. دِينِكُمْdīnikumyour religion
10. فَقَـٰتِلُوٓا۟faqātilūthen fight
11. أَئِمَّةَa-immatathe leaders
12. ٱلْكُفْرِ ۙl-kuf'ri(of) [the] disbelief
13. إِنَّهُمْinnahumindeed, they
14. لَآlāno
15. أَيْمَـٰنَaymānaoaths
16. لَهُمْlahumfor them
17. لَعَلَّهُمْlaʿallahumso that they may
18. يَنتَهُونَyantahūnacease

أَلَا تُقَـٰتِلُونَ قَوْمًا نَّكَثُوٓا۟ أَيْمَـٰنَهُمْ وَهَمُّوا۟ بِإِخْرَاجِ ٱلرَّسُولِ وَهُم بَدَءُوكُمْ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ ۚ أَتَخْشَوْنَهُمْ ۚ فَٱللَّهُ أَحَقُّ أَن تَخْشَوْهُ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ

Transliteration alā tuqātilūna qawman nakathū aymānahum wahammū bi-ikh'rāji l-rasūli wahum badaūkum awwala marratin atakhshawnahum fal-lahu aḥaqqu an takhshawhu in kuntum mu'minīna

English Would you not fight against a people who broke their oaths and determined to expel the Messenger, and they had begun [the attack upon] you the first time? Do you fear them? But Allāh has more right that you should fear Him, if you are [truly] believers.

1. أَلَاalāWill not
2. تُقَـٰتِلُونَtuqātilūnayou fight
3. قَوْمًۭاqawmana people
4. نَّكَثُوٓا۟nakathūwho broke
5. أَيْمَـٰنَهُمْaymānahumtheir oaths
6. وَهَمُّوا۟wahammūand determined
7. بِإِخْرَاجِbi-ikh'rājito drive out
8. ٱلرَّسُولِl-rasūlithe Messenger
9. وَهُمwahumand they
10. بَدَءُوكُمْbadaūkumbegan (to attack) you
11. أَوَّلَawwalafirst
12. مَرَّةٍ ۚmarratintime
13. أَتَخْشَوْنَهُمْ ۚatakhshawnahumDo you fear them
14. فَٱللَّهُfal-lahuBut Allah
15. أَحَقُّaḥaqqu(has) more right
16. أَنanthat
17. تَخْشَوْهُtakhshawhuyou should fear Him
18. إِنinif
19. كُنتُمkuntumyou are
20. مُّؤْمِنِينَmu'minīnabelievers

قَـٰتِلُوهُمْ يُعَذِّبْهُمُ ٱللَّهُ بِأَيْدِيكُمْ وَيُخْزِهِمْ وَيَنصُرْكُمْ عَلَيْهِمْ وَيَشْفِ صُدُورَ قَوْمٍ مُّؤْمِنِينَ

Transliteration qātilūhum yuʿadhib'humu l-lahu bi-aydīkum wayukh'zihim wayanṣur'kum ʿalayhim wayashfi ṣudūra qawmin mu'minīna

English Fight them; Allāh will punish them by your hands and will disgrace them and give you victory over them and satisfy the breasts [i.e., desires] of a believing people

1. قَـٰتِلُوهُمْqātilūhumFight them
2. يُعَذِّبْهُمُyuʿadhib'humuAllah will punish them
3. ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah will punish them
4. بِأَيْدِيكُمْbi-aydīkumby your hands
5. وَيُخْزِهِمْwayukh'zihimand disgrace them
6. وَيَنصُرْكُمْwayanṣur'kumand give you victory
7. عَلَيْهِمْʿalayhimover them
8. وَيَشْفِwayashfiand will heal
9. صُدُورَṣudūra(the) breasts
10. قَوْمٍۢqawmin(of) a people
11. مُّؤْمِنِينَmu'minīna(who are) believers

وَيُذْهِبْ غَيْظَ قُلُوبِهِمْ ۗ وَيَتُوبُ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ مَن يَشَآءُ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ

Transliteration wayudh'hib ghayẓa qulūbihim wayatūbu l-lahu ʿalā man yashāu wal-lahu ʿalīmun ḥakīmun

English And remove the fury in their [i.e., the believers'] hearts. And Allāh turns in forgiveness to whom He wills; and Allāh is Knowing and Wise.

1. وَيُذْهِبْwayudh'hibAnd remove
2. غَيْظَghayẓa(the) anger
3. قُلُوبِهِمْ ۗqulūbihim(of) their hearts
4. وَيَتُوبُwayatūbuAnd Allah accepts repentance
5. ٱللَّهُl-lahuAnd Allah accepts repentance
6. عَلَىٰʿalāof
7. مَنmanwhom
8. يَشَآءُ ۗyashāuHe wills
9. وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allah
10. عَلِيمٌʿalīmun(is) All-Knower
11. حَكِيمٌḥakīmunAll-Wise

أَمْ حَسِبْتُمْ أَن تُتْرَكُوا۟ وَلَمَّا يَعْلَمِ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِينَ جَـٰهَدُوا۟ مِنكُمْ وَلَمْ يَتَّخِذُوا۟ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ وَلَا رَسُولِهِۦ وَلَا ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَلِيجَةً ۚ وَٱللَّهُ خَبِيرٌۢ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ

Transliteration am ḥasib'tum an tut'rakū walammā yaʿlami l-lahu alladhīna jāhadū minkum walam yattakhidhū min dūni l-lahi walā rasūlihi walā l-mu'minīna walījatan wal-lahu khabīrun bimā taʿmalūna

English Do you think that you will be left [as you are] while Allāh has not yet made evident those among you who strive [for His cause] and do not take other than Allāh, His Messenger and the believers as intimates? And Allāh is [fully] Aware of what you do.

1. أَمْamOr
2. حَسِبْتُمْḥasib'tum(do) you think
3. أَنanthat
4. تُتْرَكُوا۟tut'rakūyou would be left
5. وَلَمَّاwalammāwhile not
6. يَعْلَمِyaʿlamiAllah made evident
7. ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah made evident
8. ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
9. جَـٰهَدُوا۟jāhadūstrive
10. مِنكُمْminkumamong you
11. وَلَمْwalamand not
12. يَتَّخِذُوا۟yattakhidhūtake
13. مِنminbesides Allah
14. دُونِdūnibesides Allah
15. ٱللَّهِl-lahibesides Allah
16. وَلَاwalāand not
17. رَسُولِهِۦrasūlihiHis Messenger
18. وَلَاwalāand not
19. ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَl-mu'minīnathe believers
20. وَلِيجَةًۭ ۚwalījatan(as) intimates
21. وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allah
22. خَبِيرٌۢkhabīrun(is) All-Aware
23. بِمَاbimāof what
24. تَعْمَلُونَtaʿmalūnayou do

مَا كَانَ لِلْمُشْرِكِينَ أَن يَعْمُرُوا۟ مَسَـٰجِدَ ٱللَّهِ شَـٰهِدِينَ عَلَىٰٓ أَنفُسِهِم بِٱلْكُفْرِ ۚ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ حَبِطَتْ أَعْمَـٰلُهُمْ وَفِى ٱلنَّارِ هُمْ خَـٰلِدُونَ

Transliteration mā kāna lil'mush'rikīna an yaʿmurū masājida l-lahi shāhidīna ʿalā anfusihim bil-kuf'ri ulāika ḥabiṭat aʿmāluhum wafī l-nāri hum khālidūna

English It is not for the polytheists to maintain the mosques of Allāh [while] witnessing against themselves with disbelief. [For] those, their deeds have become worthless, and in the Fire they will abide eternally.

1. مَاmā(It) is not
2. كَانَkāna(It) is not
3. لِلْمُشْرِكِينَlil'mush'rikīnafor the polytheists
4. أَنanthat
5. يَعْمُرُوا۟yaʿmurūthey maintain
6. مَسَـٰجِدَmasājida(the) masajid of Allah
7. ٱللَّهِl-lahi(the) masajid of Allah
8. شَـٰهِدِينَshāhidīna(while) witnessing
9. عَلَىٰٓʿalāagainst
10. أَنفُسِهِمanfusihimthemselves
11. بِٱلْكُفْرِ ۚbil-kuf'ri[with] disbelief
12. أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَulāika(For) those
13. حَبِطَتْḥabiṭatworthless
14. أَعْمَـٰلُهُمْaʿmāluhum(are) their deeds
15. وَفِىwafīand in
16. ٱلنَّارِl-nārithe Fire
17. هُمْhumthey
18. خَـٰلِدُونَkhālidūna(will) abide forever

إِنَّمَا يَعْمُرُ مَسَـٰجِدَ ٱللَّهِ مَنْ ءَامَنَ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ وَأَقَامَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتَى ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَلَمْ يَخْشَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهَ ۖ فَعَسَىٰٓ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ أَن يَكُونُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلْمُهْتَدِينَ

Transliteration innamā yaʿmuru masājida l-lahi man āmana bil-lahi wal-yawmi l-ākhiri wa-aqāma l-ṣalata waātā l-zakata walam yakhsha illā l-laha faʿasā ulāika an yakūnū mina l-muh'tadīna

English The mosques of Allāh are only to be maintained by those who believe in Allāh and the Last Day and establish prayer and give zakāh and do not fear except Allāh, for it is expected that those will be of the [rightly] guided.

1. إِنَّمَاinnamāOnly
2. يَعْمُرُyaʿmuruwill maintain
3. مَسَـٰجِدَmasājida(the) masajid of Allah
4. ٱللَّهِl-lahi(the) masajid of Allah
5. مَنْman(the one) who
6. ءَامَنَāmanabelieves
7. بِٱللَّهِbil-lahiin Allah
8. وَٱلْيَوْمِwal-yawmiand the Day
9. ٱلْـَٔاخِرِl-ākhirithe Last
10. وَأَقَامَwa-aqāmaand establishes
11. ٱلصَّلَوٰةَl-ṣalatathe prayer
12. وَءَاتَىwaātāand gives
13. ٱلزَّكَوٰةَl-zakatathe zakah
14. وَلَمْwalamand not
15. يَخْشَyakhshafear
16. إِلَّاillāexcept
17. ٱللَّهَ ۖl-lahaAllah
18. فَعَسَىٰٓfaʿasāThen perhaps
19. أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَulāikathose
20. أَنan[that]
21. يَكُونُوا۟yakūnūthey are
22. مِنَminaof
23. ٱلْمُهْتَدِينَl-muh'tadīnathe guided ones

۞ أَجَعَلْتُمْ سِقَايَةَ ٱلْحَآجِّ وَعِمَارَةَ ٱلْمَسْجِدِ ٱلْحَرَامِ كَمَنْ ءَامَنَ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ وَجَـٰهَدَ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ لَا يَسْتَوُۥنَ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ لَا يَهْدِى ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

Transliteration ajaʿaltum siqāyata l-ḥāji waʿimārata l-masjidi l-ḥarāmi kaman āmana bil-lahi wal-yawmi l-ākhiri wajāhada fī sabīli l-lahi lā yastawūna ʿinda l-lahi wal-lahu lā yahdī l-qawma l-ẓālimīna

English Have you made the providing of water for the pilgrim and the maintenance of al-Masjid al-Ḥarām equal to [the deeds of] one who believes in Allāh and the Last Day and strives in the cause of Allāh? They are not equal in the sight of Allāh. And Allāh does not guide the wrongdoing people.

1. ۞ أَجَعَلْتُمْajaʿaltumDo you make
2. سِقَايَةَsiqāyatathe providing of water
3. ٱلْحَآجِّl-ḥāji(to) the pilgrims
4. وَعِمَارَةَwaʿimārataand (the) maintenance
5. ٱلْمَسْجِدِl-masjidi(of) Al-Masjid Al-Haraam
6. ٱلْحَرَامِl-ḥarāmi(of) Al-Masjid Al-Haraam
7. كَمَنْkamanlike (the one) who
8. ءَامَنَāmanabelieves
9. بِٱللَّهِbil-lahiin Allah
10. وَٱلْيَوْمِwal-yawmiand the Day
11. ٱلْـَٔاخِرِl-ākhirithe Last
12. وَجَـٰهَدَwajāhadaand strives
13. فِىfīin
14. سَبِيلِsabīli(the) way
15. ٱللَّهِ ۚl-lahi(of) Allah
16. لَاlāThey are not equal
17. يَسْتَوُۥنَyastawūnaThey are not equal
18. عِندَʿindanear
19. ٱللَّهِ ۗl-lahiAllah
20. وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allah
21. لَاlā(does) not
22. يَهْدِىyahdīguide
23. ٱلْقَوْمَl-qawmathe people
24. ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَl-ẓālimīnathe wrongdoers

ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَهَاجَرُوا۟ وَجَـٰهَدُوا۟ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ بِأَمْوَٰلِهِمْ وَأَنفُسِهِمْ أَعْظَمُ دَرَجَةً عِندَ ٱللَّهِ ۚ وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْفَآئِزُونَ

Transliteration alladhīna āmanū wahājarū wajāhadū fī sabīli l-lahi bi-amwālihim wa-anfusihim aʿẓamu darajatan ʿinda l-lahi wa-ulāika humu l-fāizūna

English The ones who have believed, emigrated and striven in the cause of Allāh with their wealth and their lives are greater in rank in the sight of Allāh. And it is those who are the attainers [of success].

1. ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnaThose who
2. ءَامَنُوا۟āmanūbelieved
3. وَهَاجَرُوا۟wahājarūand emigrated
4. وَجَـٰهَدُوا۟wajāhadūand strove
5. فِىfīin
6. سَبِيلِsabīli(the) way
7. ٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allah
8. بِأَمْوَٰلِهِمْbi-amwālihimwith their wealth
9. وَأَنفُسِهِمْwa-anfusihimand their lives
10. أَعْظَمُaʿẓamu(are) greater
11. دَرَجَةًdarajatan(in) rank
12. عِندَʿindanear
13. ٱللَّهِ ۚl-lahiAllah
14. وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَwa-ulāikaAnd those
15. هُمُhumuthey
16. ٱلْفَآئِزُونَl-fāizūna(are) the successful

يُبَشِّرُهُمْ رَبُّهُم بِرَحْمَةٍ مِّنْهُ وَرِضْوَٰنٍ وَجَنَّـٰتٍ لَّهُمْ فِيهَا نَعِيمٌ مُّقِيمٌ

Transliteration yubashiruhum rabbuhum biraḥmatin min'hu wariḍ'wānin wajannātin lahum fīhā naʿīmun muqīmun

English Their Lord gives them good tidings of mercy from Him and approval and of gardens for them wherein is enduring pleasure.

1. يُبَشِّرُهُمْyubashiruhumTheir Lord gives them glad tidings
2. رَبُّهُمrabbuhumTheir Lord gives them glad tidings
3. بِرَحْمَةٍۢbiraḥmatinof Mercy
4. مِّنْهُmin'hufrom Him
5. وَرِضْوَٰنٍۢwariḍ'wāninand Pleasure
6. وَجَنَّـٰتٍۢwajannātinand Gardens
7. لَّهُمْlahumfor them
8. فِيهَاfīhāin it
9. نَعِيمٌۭnaʿīmun(is) bliss
10. مُّقِيمٌmuqīmunenduring

خَـٰلِدِينَ فِيهَآ أَبَدًا ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عِندَهُۥٓ أَجْرٌ عَظِيمٌ

Transliteration khālidīna fīhā abadan inna l-laha ʿindahu ajrun ʿaẓīmun

English [They will be] abiding therein forever. Indeed, Allāh has with Him a great reward.

1. خَـٰلِدِينَkhālidīna(They will) abide
2. فِيهَآfīhāin it
3. أَبَدًا ۚabadanforever
4. إِنَّinnaIndeed
5. ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
6. عِندَهُۥٓʿindahuwith Him
7. أَجْرٌajrun(is) a reward
8. عَظِيمٌۭʿaẓīmungreat

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَتَّخِذُوٓا۟ ءَابَآءَكُمْ وَإِخْوَٰنَكُمْ أَوْلِيَآءَ إِنِ ٱسْتَحَبُّوا۟ ٱلْكُفْرَ عَلَى ٱلْإِيمَـٰنِ ۚ وَمَن يَتَوَلَّهُم مِّنكُمْ فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ

Transliteration yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū lā tattakhidhū ābāakum wa-ikh'wānakum awliyāa ini is'taḥabbū l-kuf'ra ʿalā l-īmāni waman yatawallahum minkum fa-ulāika humu l-ẓālimūna

English O you who have believed, do not take your fathers or your brothers as allies if they have preferred disbelief over belief. And whoever does so among you - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.

1. يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāO you
2. ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnawho
3. ءَامَنُوا۟āmanūbelieve
4. لَاlā(Do) not
5. تَتَّخِذُوٓا۟tattakhidhūtake
6. ءَابَآءَكُمْābāakumyour fathers
7. وَإِخْوَٰنَكُمْwa-ikh'wānakumand your brothers
8. أَوْلِيَآءَawliyāa(as) allies
9. إِنِiniif
10. ٱسْتَحَبُّوا۟is'taḥabbūthey prefer
11. ٱلْكُفْرَl-kuf'ra[the] disbelief
12. عَلَىʿalāover
13. ٱلْإِيمَـٰنِ ۚl-īmāni[the] belief
14. وَمَنwamanAnd whoever
15. يَتَوَلَّهُمyatawallahumtakes them as allies
16. مِّنكُمْminkumamong you
17. فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَfa-ulāikathen those
18. هُمُhumu[they]
19. ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَl-ẓālimūna(are) the wrongdoers

قُلْ إِن كَانَ ءَابَآؤُكُمْ وَأَبْنَآؤُكُمْ وَإِخْوَٰنُكُمْ وَأَزْوَٰجُكُمْ وَعَشِيرَتُكُمْ وَأَمْوَٰلٌ ٱقْتَرَفْتُمُوهَا وَتِجَـٰرَةٌ تَخْشَوْنَ كَسَادَهَا وَمَسَـٰكِنُ تَرْضَوْنَهَآ أَحَبَّ إِلَيْكُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ وَجِهَادٍ فِى سَبِيلِهِۦ فَتَرَبَّصُوا۟ حَتَّىٰ يَأْتِىَ ٱللَّهُ بِأَمْرِهِۦ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ لَا يَهْدِى ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلْفَـٰسِقِينَ

Transliteration qul in kāna ābāukum wa-abnāukum wa-ikh'wānukum wa-azwājukum waʿashīratukum wa-amwālun iq'taraftumūhā watijāratun takhshawna kasādahā wamasākinu tarḍawnahā aḥabba ilaykum mina l-lahi warasūlihi wajihādin fī sabīlihi fatarabbaṣū ḥattā yatiya l-lahu bi-amrihi wal-lahu lā yahdī l-qawma l-fāsiqīna

English Say, [O Muḥammad], "If your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your wives, your relatives, wealth which you have obtained, commerce wherein you fear decline, and dwellings with which you are pleased are more beloved to you than Allāh and His Messenger and jihād [i.e., striving] in His cause, then wait until Allāh executes His command. And Allāh does not guide the defiantly disobedient people."

1. قُلْqulSay
2. إِنinIf
3. كَانَkānaare
4. ءَابَآؤُكُمْābāukumyour fathers
5. وَأَبْنَآؤُكُمْwa-abnāukumand your sons
6. وَإِخْوَٰنُكُمْwa-ikh'wānukumand your brothers
7. وَأَزْوَٰجُكُمْwa-azwājukumand your spouses
8. وَعَشِيرَتُكُمْwaʿashīratukumand your relatives
9. وَأَمْوَٰلٌwa-amwālunand wealth
10. ٱقْتَرَفْتُمُوهَاiq'taraftumūhāthat you have acquired
11. وَتِجَـٰرَةٌۭwatijāratunand the commerce
12. تَخْشَوْنَtakhshawnayou fear
13. كَسَادَهَاkasādahāa decline (in) it
14. وَمَسَـٰكِنُwamasākinuand the dwellings
15. تَرْضَوْنَهَآtarḍawnahāyou delight (in) it
16. أَحَبَّaḥabba(are) more beloved
17. إِلَيْكُمilaykumto you
18. مِّنَminathan
19. ٱللَّهِl-lahiAllah
20. وَرَسُولِهِۦwarasūlihiand His Messenger
21. وَجِهَادٍۢwajihādinand striving
22. فِىfīin
23. سَبِيلِهِۦsabīlihiHis way
24. فَتَرَبَّصُوا۟fatarabbaṣūthen wait
25. حَتَّىٰḥattāuntil
26. يَأْتِىَyatiyaAllah brings
27. ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah brings
28. بِأَمْرِهِۦ ۗbi-amrihiHis Command
29. وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allah
30. لَاlā(does) not
31. يَهْدِىyahdīguide
32. ٱلْقَوْمَl-qawmathe people
33. ٱلْفَـٰسِقِينَl-fāsiqīnathe defiantly disobedient

لَقَدْ نَصَرَكُمُ ٱللَّهُ فِى مَوَاطِنَ كَثِيرَةٍ ۙ وَيَوْمَ حُنَيْنٍ ۙ إِذْ أَعْجَبَتْكُمْ كَثْرَتُكُمْ فَلَمْ تُغْنِ عَنكُمْ شَيْـًٔا وَضَاقَتْ عَلَيْكُمُ ٱلْأَرْضُ بِمَا رَحُبَتْ ثُمَّ وَلَّيْتُم مُّدْبِرِينَ

Transliteration laqad naṣarakumu l-lahu fī mawāṭina kathīratin wayawma ḥunaynin idh aʿjabatkum kathratukum falam tugh'ni ʿankum shayan waḍāqat ʿalaykumu l-arḍu bimā raḥubat thumma wallaytum mud'birīna

English Allāh has already given you victory in many regions and [even] on the day of Ḥunayn, when your great number pleased you, but it did not avail you at all, and the earth was confining for you with [i.e., in spite of] its vastness; then you turned back, fleeing.

1. لَقَدْlaqadVerily
2. نَصَرَكُمُnaṣarakumuAllah helped you
3. ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah helped you
4. فِىfīin
5. مَوَاطِنَmawāṭinaregions
6. كَثِيرَةٍۢ ۙkathīratinmany
7. وَيَوْمَwayawmaand (on the) day
8. حُنَيْنٍ ۙḥunaynin(of) Hunain
9. إِذْidhwhen
10. أَعْجَبَتْكُمْaʿjabatkumpleased you
11. كَثْرَتُكُمْkathratukumyour multitude
12. فَلَمْfalambut not
13. تُغْنِtugh'niavailed
14. عَنكُمْʿankumyou
15. شَيْـًۭٔاshayananything
16. وَضَاقَتْwaḍāqatand (was) straitened
17. عَلَيْكُمُʿalaykumufor you
18. ٱلْأَرْضُl-arḍuthe earth
19. بِمَاbimā(in spite) of its vastness
20. رَحُبَتْraḥubat(in spite) of its vastness
21. ثُمَّthummathen
22. وَلَّيْتُمwallaytumyou turned back
23. مُّدْبِرِينَmud'birīnafleeing

ثُمَّ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ سَكِينَتَهُۥ عَلَىٰ رَسُولِهِۦ وَعَلَى ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَأَنزَلَ جُنُودًا لَّمْ تَرَوْهَا وَعَذَّبَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ ۚ وَذَٰلِكَ جَزَآءُ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

Transliteration thumma anzala l-lahu sakīnatahu ʿalā rasūlihi waʿalā l-mu'minīna wa-anzala junūdan lam tarawhā waʿadhaba alladhīna kafarū wadhālika jazāu l-kāfirīna

English Then Allāh sent down His tranquility upon His Messenger and upon the believers and sent down soldiers [i.e., angels] whom you did not see and punished those who disbelieved. And that is the recompense of the disbelievers.

1. ثُمَّthummaThen
2. أَنزَلَanzalaAllah sent down
3. ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah sent down
4. سَكِينَتَهُۥsakīnatahuHis tranquility
5. عَلَىٰʿalāon
6. رَسُولِهِۦrasūlihiHis Messenger
7. وَعَلَىwaʿalāand on
8. ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَl-mu'minīnathe believers
9. وَأَنزَلَwa-anzalaand sent down
10. جُنُودًۭاjunūdanforces
11. لَّمْlamwhich you did not see
12. تَرَوْهَاtarawhāwhich you did not see
13. وَعَذَّبَwaʿadhabaand He punished
14. ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
15. كَفَرُوا۟ ۚkafarūdisbelieved
16. وَذَٰلِكَwadhālikaAnd that
17. جَزَآءُjazāu(is) the recompense
18. ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَl-kāfirīna(of) the disbelievers

ثُمَّ يَتُوبُ ٱللَّهُ مِنۢ بَعْدِ ذَٰلِكَ عَلَىٰ مَن يَشَآءُ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ

Transliteration thumma yatūbu l-lahu min baʿdi dhālika ʿalā man yashāu wal-lahu ghafūrun raḥīmun

English Then Allāh will accept repentance after that for whom He wills; and Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.

1. ثُمَّthummaThen
2. يَتُوبُyatūbuAllah accepts repentance
3. ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah accepts repentance
4. مِنۢminafter
5. بَعْدِbaʿdiafter
6. ذَٰلِكَdhālikathat
7. عَلَىٰʿalāfor
8. مَنmanwhom
9. يَشَآءُ ۗyashāuHe wills
10. وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allah
11. غَفُورٌۭghafūrun(is) Oft-Forgiving
12. رَّحِيمٌۭraḥīmunMost Merciful

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِنَّمَا ٱلْمُشْرِكُونَ نَجَسٌ فَلَا يَقْرَبُوا۟ ٱلْمَسْجِدَ ٱلْحَرَامَ بَعْدَ عَامِهِمْ هَـٰذَا ۚ وَإِنْ خِفْتُمْ عَيْلَةً فَسَوْفَ يُغْنِيكُمُ ٱللَّهُ مِن فَضْلِهِۦٓ إِن شَآءَ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ

Transliteration yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū innamā l-mush'rikūna najasun falā yaqrabū l-masjida l-ḥarāma baʿda ʿāmihim hādhā wa-in khif'tum ʿaylatan fasawfa yugh'nīkumu l-lahu min faḍlihi in shāa inna l-laha ʿalīmun ḥakīmun

English O you who have believed, indeed the polytheists are unclean, so let them not approach al-Masjid al-Ḥarām after this, their [final] year. And if you fear privation, Allāh will enrich you from His bounty if He wills. Indeed, Allāh is Knowing and Wise.

1. يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāO you who believe
2. ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnaO you who believe
3. ءَامَنُوٓا۟āmanūO you who believe
4. إِنَّمَاinnamāIndeed
5. ٱلْمُشْرِكُونَl-mush'rikūnathe polytheists
6. نَجَسٌۭnajasun(are) unclean
7. فَلَاfalāso let them not come near
8. يَقْرَبُوا۟yaqrabūso let them not come near
9. ٱلْمَسْجِدَl-masjidaAl-Masjid Al-Haraam
10. ٱلْحَرَامَl-ḥarāmaAl-Masjid Al-Haraam
11. بَعْدَbaʿdaafter
12. عَامِهِمْʿāmihimthis, their (final) year
13. هَـٰذَا ۚhādhāthis, their (final) year
14. وَإِنْwa-inAnd if
15. خِفْتُمْkhif'tumyou fear
16. عَيْلَةًۭʿaylatanpoverty
17. فَسَوْفَfasawfathen soon
18. يُغْنِيكُمُyugh'nīkumuAllah will enrich you
19. ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah will enrich you
20. مِنminfrom
21. فَضْلِهِۦٓfaḍlihiHis Bounty
22. إِنinif
23. شَآءَ ۚshāaHe wills
24. إِنَّinnaIndeed
25. ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
26. عَلِيمٌʿalīmun(is) All-Knower
27. حَكِيمٌۭḥakīmunAll-Wise

قَـٰتِلُوا۟ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱللَّهِ وَلَا بِٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ وَلَا يُحَرِّمُونَ مَا حَرَّمَ ٱللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُۥ وَلَا يَدِينُونَ دِينَ ٱلْحَقِّ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ حَتَّىٰ يُعْطُوا۟ ٱلْجِزْيَةَ عَن يَدٍ وَهُمْ صَـٰغِرُونَ

Transliteration qātilū alladhīna lā yu'minūna bil-lahi walā bil-yawmi l-ākhiri walā yuḥarrimūna mā ḥarrama l-lahu warasūluhu walā yadīnūna dīna l-ḥaqi mina alladhīna ūtū l-kitāba ḥattā yuʿ'ṭū l-jiz'yata ʿan yadin wahum ṣāghirūna

English Fight against those who do not believe in Allāh or in the Last Day and who do not consider unlawful what Allāh and His Messenger have made unlawful and who do not adopt the religion of truth [i.e., Islām] from those who were given the Scripture - [fight] until they give the jizyah willingly while they are humbled.

1. قَـٰتِلُوا۟qātilūFight
2. ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
3. لَاlā(do) not
4. يُؤْمِنُونَyu'minūnabelieve
5. بِٱللَّهِbil-lahiin Allah
6. وَلَاwalāand not
7. بِٱلْيَوْمِbil-yawmiin the Day
8. ٱلْـَٔاخِرِl-ākhirithe Last
9. وَلَاwalāand not
10. يُحَرِّمُونَyuḥarrimūnathey make unlawful
11. مَاmāwhat
12. حَرَّمَḥarramaAllah has made unlawful
13. ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah has made unlawful
14. وَرَسُولُهُۥwarasūluhuand His Messenger
15. وَلَاwalāand not
16. يَدِينُونَyadīnūnathey acknowledge
17. دِينَdīna(the) religion
18. ٱلْحَقِّl-ḥaqi(of) the truth
19. مِنَminafrom
20. ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
21. أُوتُوا۟ūtūwere given
22. ٱلْكِتَـٰبَl-kitābathe Scripture
23. حَتَّىٰḥattāuntil
24. يُعْطُوا۟yuʿ'ṭūthey pay
25. ٱلْجِزْيَةَl-jiz'yatathe jizyah
26. عَنʿanwillingly
27. يَدٍۢyadinwillingly
28. وَهُمْwahumwhile they
29. صَـٰغِرُونَṣāghirūna(are) subdued

وَقَالَتِ ٱلْيَهُودُ عُزَيْرٌ ٱبْنُ ٱللَّهِ وَقَالَتِ ٱلنَّصَـٰرَى ٱلْمَسِيحُ ٱبْنُ ٱللَّهِ ۖ ذَٰلِكَ قَوْلُهُم بِأَفْوَٰهِهِمْ ۖ يُضَـٰهِـُٔونَ قَوْلَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِن قَبْلُ ۚ قَـٰتَلَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ ۚ أَنَّىٰ يُؤْفَكُونَ

Transliteration waqālati l-yahūdu ʿuzayrun ub'nu l-lahi waqālati l-naṣārā l-masīḥu ub'nu l-lahi dhālika qawluhum bi-afwāhihim yuḍāhiūna qawla alladhīna kafarū min qablu qātalahumu l-lahu annā yu'fakūna

English The Jews say, "Ezra is the son of Allāh"; and the Christians say, "The Messiah is the son of Allāh." That is their statement from their mouths; they imitate the saying of those who disbelieved before [them]. May Allāh destroy them; how are they deluded?

1. وَقَالَتِwaqālatiAnd said
2. ٱلْيَهُودُl-yahūduthe Jews
3. عُزَيْرٌʿuzayrunUzair
4. ٱبْنُub'nu(is) son
5. ٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allah
6. وَقَالَتِwaqālatiAnd said
7. ٱلنَّصَـٰرَىl-naṣārāthe Christians
8. ٱلْمَسِيحُl-masīḥuMessiah
9. ٱبْنُub'nu(is) son
10. ٱللَّهِ ۖl-lahi(of) Allah
11. ذَٰلِكَdhālikaThat
12. قَوْلُهُمqawluhum(is) their saying
13. بِأَفْوَٰهِهِمْ ۖbi-afwāhihimwith their mouths
14. يُضَـٰهِـُٔونَyuḍāhiūnathey imitate
15. قَوْلَqawlathe saying
16. ٱلَّذِينَalladhīna(of) those who
17. كَفَرُوا۟kafarūdisbelieved
18. مِنminbefore
19. قَبْلُ ۚqablubefore
20. قَـٰتَلَهُمُqātalahumu(May) Allah destroy them
21. ٱللَّهُ ۚl-lahu(May) Allah destroy them
22. أَنَّىٰannāHow
23. يُؤْفَكُونَyu'fakūnadeluded are they

ٱتَّخَذُوٓا۟ أَحْبَارَهُمْ وَرُهْبَـٰنَهُمْ أَرْبَابًا مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ وَٱلْمَسِيحَ ٱبْنَ مَرْيَمَ وَمَآ أُمِرُوٓا۟ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُوٓا۟ إِلَـٰهًا وَٰحِدًا ۖ لَّآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۚ سُبْحَـٰنَهُۥ عَمَّا يُشْرِكُونَ

Transliteration ittakhadhū aḥbārahum waruh'bānahum arbāban min dūni l-lahi wal-masīḥa ib'na maryama wamā umirū illā liyaʿbudū ilāhan wāḥidan lā ilāha illā huwa sub'ḥānahu ʿammā yush'rikūna

English They have taken their scholars and monks as lords besides Allāh, and [also] the Messiah, the son of Mary. And they were not commanded except to worship one God; there is no deity except Him. Exalted is He above whatever they associate with Him.

1. ٱتَّخَذُوٓا۟ittakhadhūThey have taken
2. أَحْبَارَهُمْaḥbārahumtheir rabbis
3. وَرُهْبَـٰنَهُمْwaruh'bānahumand their monks
4. أَرْبَابًۭاarbāban(as) Lords
5. مِّنminbesides
6. دُونِdūnibesides
7. ٱللَّهِl-lahiAllah
8. وَٱلْمَسِيحَwal-masīḥaand the Messiah
9. ٱبْنَib'nason
10. مَرْيَمَmaryama(of) Maryam
11. وَمَآwamāAnd not
12. أُمِرُوٓا۟umirūthey were commanded
13. إِلَّاillāexcept
14. لِيَعْبُدُوٓا۟liyaʿbudūthat they worship
15. إِلَـٰهًۭاilāhanOne God
16. وَٰحِدًۭا ۖwāḥidanOne God
17. لَّآlā(There) is no
18. إِلَـٰهَilāhagod
19. إِلَّاillāexcept
20. هُوَ ۚhuwaHim
21. سُبْحَـٰنَهُۥsub'ḥānahuGlory be to Him
22. عَمَّاʿammāfrom what
23. يُشْرِكُونَyush'rikūnathey associate (with Him)

يُرِيدُونَ أَن يُطْفِـُٔوا۟ نُورَ ٱللَّهِ بِأَفْوَٰهِهِمْ وَيَأْبَى ٱللَّهُ إِلَّآ أَن يُتِمَّ نُورَهُۥ وَلَوْ كَرِهَ ٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ

Transliteration yurīdūna an yuṭ'fiū nūra l-lahi bi-afwāhihim wayabā l-lahu illā an yutimma nūrahu walaw kariha l-kāfirūna

English They want to extinguish the light of Allāh with their mouths, but Allāh refuses except to perfect His light, although the disbelievers dislike it.

1. يُرِيدُونَyurīdūnaThey want
2. أَنanto
3. يُطْفِـُٔوا۟yuṭ'fiūextinguish
4. نُورَnūraAllah's light
5. ٱللَّهِl-lahiAllah's light
6. بِأَفْوَٰهِهِمْbi-afwāhihimwith their mouths
7. وَيَأْبَىwayabābut Allah refuses
8. ٱللَّهُl-lahubut Allah refuses
9. إِلَّآillāexcept
10. أَنanto
11. يُتِمَّyutimmaperfect
12. نُورَهُۥnūrahuHis Light
13. وَلَوْwalaweven if
14. كَرِهَkarihathe disbelievers dislike (it)
15. ٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَl-kāfirūnathe disbelievers dislike (it)

هُوَ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَرْسَلَ رَسُولَهُۥ بِٱلْهُدَىٰ وَدِينِ ٱلْحَقِّ لِيُظْهِرَهُۥ عَلَى ٱلدِّينِ كُلِّهِۦ وَلَوْ كَرِهَ ٱلْمُشْرِكُونَ

Transliteration huwa alladhī arsala rasūlahu bil-hudā wadīni l-ḥaqi liyuẓ'hirahu ʿalā l-dīni kullihi walaw kariha l-mush'rikūna

English It is He who has sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth to manifest it over all religion, although they who associate others with Allāh dislike it.

1. هُوَhuwaHe
2. ٱلَّذِىٓalladhī(is) the One Who
3. أَرْسَلَarsalahas sent
4. رَسُولَهُۥrasūlahuHis Messenger
5. بِٱلْهُدَىٰbil-hudāwith the guidance
6. وَدِينِwadīniand the religion
7. ٱلْحَقِّl-ḥaqi(of) [the] truth
8. لِيُظْهِرَهُۥliyuẓ'hirahuto manifest it
9. عَلَىʿalāover
10. ٱلدِّينِl-dīniall religions
11. كُلِّهِۦkullihiall religions
12. وَلَوْwalawEven if
13. كَرِهَkarihadislike (it)
14. ٱلْمُشْرِكُونَl-mush'rikūnathe polytheists

۞ يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِنَّ كَثِيرًا مِّنَ ٱلْأَحْبَارِ وَٱلرُّهْبَانِ لَيَأْكُلُونَ أَمْوَٰلَ ٱلنَّاسِ بِٱلْبَـٰطِلِ وَيَصُدُّونَ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ ۗ وَٱلَّذِينَ يَكْنِزُونَ ٱلذَّهَبَ وَٱلْفِضَّةَ وَلَا يُنفِقُونَهَا فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ فَبَشِّرْهُم بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ

Transliteration yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū inna kathīran mina l-aḥbāri wal-ruh'bāni layakulūna amwāla l-nāsi bil-bāṭili wayaṣuddūna ʿan sabīli l-lahi wa-alladhīna yaknizūna l-dhahaba wal-fiḍata walā yunfiqūnahā fī sabīli l-lahi fabashir'hum biʿadhābin alīmin

English O you who have believed, indeed many of the scholars and the monks devour the wealth of people unjustly and avert [them] from the way of Allāh. And those who hoard gold and silver and spend it not in the way of Allāh - give them tidings of a painful punishment.

1. ۞ يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāO you who believe
2. ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnaO you who believe
3. ءَامَنُوٓا۟āmanūO you who believe
4. إِنَّinnaIndeed
5. كَثِيرًۭاkathīranmany
6. مِّنَminaof
7. ٱلْأَحْبَارِl-aḥbārithe rabbis
8. وَٱلرُّهْبَانِwal-ruh'bāniand the monks
9. لَيَأْكُلُونَlayakulūnasurely eat
10. أَمْوَٰلَamwāla(the) wealth
11. ٱلنَّاسِl-nāsi(of) the people
12. بِٱلْبَـٰطِلِbil-bāṭiliin falsehood
13. وَيَصُدُّونَwayaṣuddūnaand hinder
14. عَنʿanfrom
15. سَبِيلِsabīli(the) way
16. ٱللَّهِ ۗl-lahi(of) Allah
17. وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those who
18. يَكْنِزُونَyaknizūnahoard
19. ٱلذَّهَبَl-dhahabathe gold
20. وَٱلْفِضَّةَwal-fiḍataand the silver
21. وَلَاwalāand (do) not
22. يُنفِقُونَهَاyunfiqūnahāspend it
23. فِىfīin
24. سَبِيلِsabīli(the) way
25. ٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allah
26. فَبَشِّرْهُمfabashir'hum[so] give them tidings
27. بِعَذَابٍbiʿadhābinof a punishment
28. أَلِيمٍۢalīminpainful

يَوْمَ يُحْمَىٰ عَلَيْهَا فِى نَارِ جَهَنَّمَ فَتُكْوَىٰ بِهَا جِبَاهُهُمْ وَجُنُوبُهُمْ وَظُهُورُهُمْ ۖ هَـٰذَا مَا كَنَزْتُمْ لِأَنفُسِكُمْ فَذُوقُوا۟ مَا كُنتُمْ تَكْنِزُونَ

Transliteration yawma yuḥ'mā ʿalayhā fī nāri jahannama fatuk'wā bihā jibāhuhum wajunūbuhum waẓuhūruhum hādhā mā kanaztum li-anfusikum fadhūqū mā kuntum taknizūna

English The Day when it will be heated in the fire of Hell and seared therewith will be their foreheads, their flanks, and their backs, [it will be said], "This is what you hoarded for yourselves, so taste what you used to hoard."

1. يَوْمَyawma(The) Day
2. يُحْمَىٰyuḥ'māit will be heated [on it]
3. عَلَيْهَاʿalayhāit will be heated [on it]
4. فِىfīin
5. نَارِnārithe Fire
6. جَهَنَّمَjahannama(of) Hell
7. فَتُكْوَىٰfatuk'wāand will be branded
8. بِهَاbihāwith it
9. جِبَاهُهُمْjibāhuhumtheir foreheads
10. وَجُنُوبُهُمْwajunūbuhumand their flanks
11. وَظُهُورُهُمْ ۖwaẓuhūruhumand their backs
12. هَـٰذَاhādhāThis
13. مَاmā(is) what
14. كَنَزْتُمْkanaztumyou hoarded
15. لِأَنفُسِكُمْli-anfusikumfor yourselves
16. فَذُوقُوا۟fadhūqūso taste
17. مَاmāwhat
18. كُنتُمْkuntumyou used to
19. تَكْنِزُونَtaknizūnahoard

إِنَّ عِدَّةَ ٱلشُّهُورِ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ ٱثْنَا عَشَرَ شَهْرًا فِى كِتَـٰبِ ٱللَّهِ يَوْمَ خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ مِنْهَآ أَرْبَعَةٌ حُرُمٌ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلدِّينُ ٱلْقَيِّمُ ۚ فَلَا تَظْلِمُوا۟ فِيهِنَّ أَنفُسَكُمْ ۚ وَقَـٰتِلُوا۟ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ كَآفَّةً كَمَا يُقَـٰتِلُونَكُمْ كَآفَّةً ۚ وَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ مَعَ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ

Transliteration inna ʿiddata l-shuhūri ʿinda l-lahi ith'nā ʿashara shahran fī kitābi l-lahi yawma khalaqa l-samāwāti wal-arḍa min'hā arbaʿatun ḥurumun dhālika l-dīnu l-qayimu falā taẓlimū fīhinna anfusakum waqātilū l-mush'rikīna kāffatan kamā yuqātilūnakum kāffatan wa-iʿ'lamū anna l-laha maʿa l-mutaqīna

English Indeed, the number of months with Allāh is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allāh [from] the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred. That is the correct religion [i.e., way], so do not wrong yourselves during them. And fight against the disbelievers collectively as they fight against you collectively. And know that Allāh is with the righteous [who fear Him].

3. ٱلشُّهُورِl-shuhūri(of) the months
4. عِندَʿindawith
5. ٱللَّهِl-lahiAllah
6. ٱثْنَاith'nā(is) twelve
7. عَشَرَʿashara(is) twelve
8. شَهْرًۭاshahranmonths
9. فِىfīin
10. كِتَـٰبِkitābi(the) ordinance
11. ٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allah
12. يَوْمَyawma(from the) Day
13. خَلَقَkhalaqaHe created
14. ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِl-samāwātithe heavens
15. وَٱلْأَرْضَwal-arḍaand the earth
16. مِنْهَآmin'hāof them
17. أَرْبَعَةٌarbaʿatunfour
18. حُرُمٌۭ ۚḥurumun(are) sacred
19. ذَٰلِكَdhālikaThat
20. ٱلدِّينُl-dīnu(is) the religion
21. ٱلْقَيِّمُ ۚl-qayimuthe upright
22. فَلَاfalāso (do) not
23. تَظْلِمُوا۟taẓlimūwrong
24. فِيهِنَّfīhinnatherein
25. أَنفُسَكُمْ ۚanfusakumyourselves
26. وَقَـٰتِلُوا۟waqātilūAnd fight
27. ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَl-mush'rikīnathe polytheists
28. كَآفَّةًۭkāffatanall together
29. كَمَاkamāas
30. يُقَـٰتِلُونَكُمْyuqātilūnakumthey fight you
31. كَآفَّةًۭ ۚkāffatanall together
32. وَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟wa-iʿ'lamūAnd know
33. أَنَّannathat
34. ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
35. مَعَmaʿa(is) with
36. ٱلْمُتَّقِينَl-mutaqīnathe righteous

إِنَّمَا ٱلنَّسِىٓءُ زِيَادَةٌ فِى ٱلْكُفْرِ ۖ يُضَلُّ بِهِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ يُحِلُّونَهُۥ عَامًا وَيُحَرِّمُونَهُۥ عَامًا لِّيُوَاطِـُٔوا۟ عِدَّةَ مَا حَرَّمَ ٱللَّهُ فَيُحِلُّوا۟ مَا حَرَّمَ ٱللَّهُ ۚ زُيِّنَ لَهُمْ سُوٓءُ أَعْمَـٰلِهِمْ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ لَا يَهْدِى ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

Transliteration innamā l-nasīu ziyādatun fī l-kuf'ri yuḍallu bihi alladhīna kafarū yuḥillūnahu ʿāman wayuḥarrimūnahu ʿāman liyuwāṭiū ʿiddata mā ḥarrama l-lahu fayuḥillū mā ḥarrama l-lahu zuyyina lahum sūu aʿmālihim wal-lahu lā yahdī l-qawma l-kāfirīna

English Indeed, the postponing [of restriction within sacred months] is an increase in disbelief by which those who have disbelieved are led [further] astray. They make it lawful one year and unlawful another year to correspond to the number made unlawful by Allāh and [thus] make lawful what Allāh has made unlawful. Made pleasing to them is the evil of their deeds; and Allāh does not guide the disbelieving people.

1. إِنَّمَاinnamāIndeed
2. ٱلنَّسِىٓءُl-nasīuthe postponing
3. زِيَادَةٌۭziyādatun(is) an increase
4. فِىfīin
5. ٱلْكُفْرِ ۖl-kuf'rithe disbelief
6. يُضَلُّyuḍalluare led astray
7. بِهِbihiby it
8. ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
9. كَفَرُوا۟kafarūdisbelieve
10. يُحِلُّونَهُۥyuḥillūnahuThey make it lawful
11. عَامًۭاʿāmanone year
12. وَيُحَرِّمُونَهُۥwayuḥarrimūnahuand make it unlawful
13. عَامًۭاʿāman(another) year
14. لِّيُوَاطِـُٔوا۟liyuwāṭiūto adjust
15. عِدَّةَʿiddatathe number
16. مَاmāwhich
17. حَرَّمَḥarramaAllah has made unlawful
18. ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah has made unlawful
19. فَيُحِلُّوا۟fayuḥillūand making lawful
20. مَاmāwhat
21. حَرَّمَḥarramaAllah has made unlawful
22. ٱللَّهُ ۚl-lahuAllah has made unlawful
23. زُيِّنَzuyyinaIs made fair-seeming
24. لَهُمْlahumto them
25. سُوٓءُsūu(the) evil
26. أَعْمَـٰلِهِمْ ۗaʿmālihim(of) their deeds
27. وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allah
28. لَاlā(does) not
29. يَهْدِىyahdīguide
30. ٱلْقَوْمَl-qawmathe people
31. ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَl-kāfirīnathe disbelievers

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مَا لَكُمْ إِذَا قِيلَ لَكُمُ ٱنفِرُوا۟ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ ٱثَّاقَلْتُمْ إِلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ ۚ أَرَضِيتُم بِٱلْحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنْيَا مِنَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ ۚ فَمَا مَتَـٰعُ ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنْيَا فِى ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ إِلَّا قَلِيلٌ

Transliteration yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū mā lakum idhā qīla lakumu infirū fī sabīli l-lahi ithāqaltum ilā l-arḍi araḍītum bil-ḥayati l-dun'yā mina l-ākhirati famā matāʿu l-ḥayati l-dun'yā fī l-ākhirati illā qalīlun

English O you who have believed, what is [the matter] with you that, when you are told to go forth in the cause of Allāh, you adhere heavily to the earth? Are you satisfied with the life of this world rather than the Hereafter? But what is the enjoyment of worldly life compared to the Hereafter except a [very] little.

1. يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāO you who believe
2. ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnaO you who believe
3. ءَامَنُوا۟āmanūO you who believe
4. مَاmāWhat
5. لَكُمْlakum(is the matter) with you
6. إِذَاidhāwhen
7. قِيلَqīlait is said
8. لَكُمُlakumuto you
9. ٱنفِرُوا۟infirūgo forth
10. فِىfīin
11. سَبِيلِsabīli(the) way
12. ٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allah
13. ٱثَّاقَلْتُمْithāqaltumyou cling heavily
14. إِلَىilāto
15. ٱلْأَرْضِ ۚl-arḍithe earth
16. أَرَضِيتُمaraḍītumAre you pleased
17. بِٱلْحَيَوٰةِbil-ḥayatiwith the life
18. ٱلدُّنْيَاl-dun'yā(of) the world
19. مِنَmina(rather) than
20. ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ ۚl-ākhiratithe Hereafter
21. فَمَاfamāBut what
22. مَتَـٰعُmatāʿu(is the) enjoyment
23. ٱلْحَيَوٰةِl-ḥayati(of) the life
24. ٱلدُّنْيَاl-dun'yā(of) the world
25. فِىfīin (comparison to)
26. ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِl-ākhiratithe hereafter
27. إِلَّاillāexcept
28. قَلِيلٌqalīluna little

إِلَّا تَنفِرُوا۟ يُعَذِّبْكُمْ عَذَابًا أَلِيمًا وَيَسْتَبْدِلْ قَوْمًا غَيْرَكُمْ وَلَا تَضُرُّوهُ شَيْـًٔا ۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

Transliteration illā tanfirū yuʿadhib'kum ʿadhāban alīman wayastabdil qawman ghayrakum walā taḍurrūhu shayan wal-lahu ʿalā kulli shayin qadīrun

English If you do not go forth, He will punish you with a painful punishment and will replace you with another people, and you will not harm Him at all. And Allāh is over all things competent.

1. إِلَّاillāIf not
2. تَنفِرُوا۟tanfirūyou go forth
3. يُعَذِّبْكُمْyuʿadhib'kumHe will punish you
4. عَذَابًاʿadhāban(with) a painful punishment
5. أَلِيمًۭاalīman(with) a painful punishment
6. وَيَسْتَبْدِلْwayastabdiland will replace you
7. قَوْمًاqawman(with) a people
8. غَيْرَكُمْghayrakumother than you
9. وَلَاwalāand not
10. تَضُرُّوهُtaḍurrūhuyou can harm Him
11. شَيْـًۭٔا ۗshayan(in) anything
12. وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allah
13. عَلَىٰʿalā(is) on
14. كُلِّkullievery
15. شَىْءٍۢshayinthing
16. قَدِيرٌqadīrunAll-Powerful

إِلَّا تَنصُرُوهُ فَقَدْ نَصَرَهُ ٱللَّهُ إِذْ أَخْرَجَهُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ ثَانِىَ ٱثْنَيْنِ إِذْ هُمَا فِى ٱلْغَارِ إِذْ يَقُولُ لِصَـٰحِبِهِۦ لَا تَحْزَنْ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ مَعَنَا ۖ فَأَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ سَكِينَتَهُۥ عَلَيْهِ وَأَيَّدَهُۥ بِجُنُودٍ لَّمْ تَرَوْهَا وَجَعَلَ كَلِمَةَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ ٱلسُّفْلَىٰ ۗ وَكَلِمَةُ ٱللَّهِ هِىَ ٱلْعُلْيَا ۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ

Transliteration illā tanṣurūhu faqad naṣarahu l-lahu idh akhrajahu alladhīna kafarū thāniya ith'nayni idh humā fī l-ghāri idh yaqūlu liṣāḥibihi lā taḥzan inna l-laha maʿanā fa-anzala l-lahu sakīnatahu ʿalayhi wa-ayyadahu bijunūdin lam tarawhā wajaʿala kalimata alladhīna kafarū l-suf'lā wakalimatu l-lahi hiya l-ʿul'yā wal-lahu ʿazīzun ḥakīmun

English If you do not aid him [i.e., the Prophet (ﷺ)] - Allāh has already aided him when those who disbelieved had driven him out [of Makkah] as one of two, when they were in the cave and he [i.e., Muḥammad (ﷺ)] said to his companion, "Do not grieve; indeed Allāh is with us." And Allāh sent down His tranquility upon him and supported him with soldiers [i.e., angels] you did not see and made the word of those who disbelieved the lowest, while the word of Allāh - that is the highest. And Allāh is Exalted in Might and Wise.

1. إِلَّاillāIf not
2. تَنصُرُوهُtanṣurūhuyou help him
3. فَقَدْfaqadcertainly
4. نَصَرَهُnaṣarahuAllah helped him
5. ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah helped him
6. إِذْidhwhen
7. أَخْرَجَهُakhrajahudrove him out
8. ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
9. كَفَرُوا۟kafarūdisbelieved
10. ثَانِىَthāniyathe second
11. ٱثْنَيْنِith'nayni(of) the two
12. إِذْidhwhen
13. هُمَاhumāthey both
14. فِىfī(were) in
15. ٱلْغَارِl-ghārithe cave
16. إِذْidhwhen
17. يَقُولُyaqūluhe said
18. لِصَـٰحِبِهِۦliṣāḥibihito his companion
19. لَاlā(Do) not
20. تَحْزَنْtaḥzangrieve
21. إِنَّinnaindeed
22. ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
23. مَعَنَا ۖmaʿanā(is) with us
24. فَأَنزَلَfa-anzalaThen Allah sent down
25. ٱللَّهُl-lahuThen Allah sent down
26. سَكِينَتَهُۥsakīnatahuHis tranquility
27. عَلَيْهِʿalayhiupon him
28. وَأَيَّدَهُۥwa-ayyadahuand supported him
29. بِجُنُودٍۢbijunūdinwith forces
30. لَّمْlamwhich you did not see
31. تَرَوْهَاtarawhāwhich you did not see
32. وَجَعَلَwajaʿalaand made
33. كَلِمَةَkalimata(the) word
34. ٱلَّذِينَalladhīna(of) those who
35. كَفَرُوا۟kafarūdisbelieved
36. ٱلسُّفْلَىٰ ۗl-suf'lāthe lowest
37. وَكَلِمَةُwakalimatuwhile (the) Word
38. ٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allah
39. هِىَhiyait (is)
40. ٱلْعُلْيَا ۗl-ʿul'yāthe highest
41. وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allah
42. عَزِيزٌʿazīzun(is) All-Mighty
43. حَكِيمٌḥakīmunAll-Wise

ٱنفِرُوا۟ خِفَافًا وَثِقَالًا وَجَـٰهِدُوا۟ بِأَمْوَٰلِكُمْ وَأَنفُسِكُمْ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ ذَٰلِكُمْ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ

Transliteration infirū khifāfan wathiqālan wajāhidū bi-amwālikum wa-anfusikum fī sabīli l-lahi dhālikum khayrun lakum in kuntum taʿlamūna

English Go forth, whether light or heavy, and strive with your wealth and your lives in the cause of Allāh. That is better for you, if you only knew.

1. ٱنفِرُوا۟infirūGo forth
2. خِفَافًۭاkhifāfanlight
3. وَثِقَالًۭاwathiqālanor heavy
4. وَجَـٰهِدُوا۟wajāhidūand strive
5. بِأَمْوَٰلِكُمْbi-amwālikumwith your wealth
6. وَأَنفُسِكُمْwa-anfusikumand your lives
7. فِىfīin
8. سَبِيلِsabīli(the) way
9. ٱللَّهِ ۚl-lahi(of) Allah
10. ذَٰلِكُمْdhālikumThat
11. خَيْرٌۭkhayrun(is) better
12. لَّكُمْlakumfor you
13. إِنinif
14. كُنتُمْkuntumyou
15. تَعْلَمُونَtaʿlamūnaknow

لَوْ كَانَ عَرَضًا قَرِيبًا وَسَفَرًا قَاصِدًا لَّٱتَّبَعُوكَ وَلَـٰكِنۢ بَعُدَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلشُّقَّةُ ۚ وَسَيَحْلِفُونَ بِٱللَّهِ لَوِ ٱسْتَطَعْنَا لَخَرَجْنَا مَعَكُمْ يُهْلِكُونَ أَنفُسَهُمْ وَٱللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ إِنَّهُمْ لَكَـٰذِبُونَ

Transliteration law kāna ʿaraḍan qarīban wasafaran qāṣidan la-ittabaʿūka walākin baʿudat ʿalayhimu l-shuqatu wasayaḥlifūna bil-lahi lawi is'taṭaʿnā lakharajnā maʿakum yuh'likūna anfusahum wal-lahu yaʿlamu innahum lakādhibūna

English Had it been a near [i.e., easy] gain and a moderate trip, they [i.e., the hypocrites] would have followed you, but distant to them was the journey. And they will swear by Allāh, "If we were able, we would have gone forth with you," destroying themselves [through false oaths], and Allāh knows that indeed they are liars.

1. لَوْlawIf
2. كَانَkānait had been
3. عَرَضًۭاʿaraḍana gain
4. قَرِيبًۭاqarībannear
5. وَسَفَرًۭاwasafaranand a journey
6. قَاصِدًۭاqāṣidaneasy
7. لَّٱتَّبَعُوكَla-ittabaʿūkasurely they (would) have followed you
8. وَلَـٰكِنۢwalākinbut
9. بَعُدَتْbaʿudatwas long
10. عَلَيْهِمُʿalayhimufor them
11. ٱلشُّقَّةُ ۚl-shuqatuthe distance
12. وَسَيَحْلِفُونَwasayaḥlifūnaAnd they will swear
13. بِٱللَّهِbil-lahiby Allah
14. لَوِlawiIf
15. ٱسْتَطَعْنَاis'taṭaʿnāwe were able
16. لَخَرَجْنَاlakharajnācertainly we (would) have come forth
17. مَعَكُمْmaʿakumwith you
18. يُهْلِكُونَyuh'likūnaThey destroy
19. أَنفُسَهُمْanfusahumtheir own selves
20. وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuand Allah
21. يَعْلَمُyaʿlamuknows
22. إِنَّهُمْinnahum(that) indeed, they
23. لَكَـٰذِبُونَlakādhibūna(are) surely liars

عَفَا ٱللَّهُ عَنكَ لِمَ أَذِنتَ لَهُمْ حَتَّىٰ يَتَبَيَّنَ لَكَ ٱلَّذِينَ صَدَقُوا۟ وَتَعْلَمَ ٱلْكَـٰذِبِينَ

Transliteration ʿafā l-lahu ʿanka lima adhinta lahum ḥattā yatabayyana laka alladhīna ṣadaqū wataʿlama l-kādhibīna

English Allāh has pardoned you, [O Muḥammad, but] why did you give them permission [to remain behind]? [You should not have] until it was evident to you who were truthful and you knew [who were] the liars.

1. عَفَاʿafā(May) Allah forgive
2. ٱللَّهُl-lahu(May) Allah forgive
3. عَنكَʿankayou
4. لِمَlimaWhy (did)
5. أَذِنتَadhintayou grant leave
6. لَهُمْlahumto them
7. حَتَّىٰḥattāuntil
8. يَتَبَيَّنَyatabayyana(became) evident
9. لَكَlakato you
10. ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
11. صَدَقُوا۟ṣadaqūwere truthful
12. وَتَعْلَمَwataʿlamaand you knew
13. ٱلْكَـٰذِبِينَl-kādhibīnathe liars

لَا يَسْتَـْٔذِنُكَ ٱلَّذِينَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ أَن يُجَـٰهِدُوا۟ بِأَمْوَٰلِهِمْ وَأَنفُسِهِمْ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌۢ بِٱلْمُتَّقِينَ

Transliteration lā yastadhinuka alladhīna yu'minūna bil-lahi wal-yawmi l-ākhiri an yujāhidū bi-amwālihim wa-anfusihim wal-lahu ʿalīmun bil-mutaqīna

English Those who believe in Allāh and the Last Day would not ask permission of you to be excused from striving [i.e., fighting] with their wealth and their lives. And Allāh is Knowing of those who fear Him.

1. لَاlā(Would) not ask your permission
2. يَسْتَـْٔذِنُكَyastadhinuka(Would) not ask your permission
3. ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
4. يُؤْمِنُونَyu'minūnabelieve
5. بِٱللَّهِbil-lahiin Allah
6. وَٱلْيَوْمِwal-yawmiand the Day
7. ٱلْـَٔاخِرِl-ākhirithe Last
8. أَنanthat
9. يُجَـٰهِدُوا۟yujāhidūthey strive
10. بِأَمْوَٰلِهِمْbi-amwālihimwith their wealth
11. وَأَنفُسِهِمْ ۗwa-anfusihimand their lives
12. وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allah
13. عَلِيمٌۢʿalīmun(is) All-Knower
14. بِٱلْمُتَّقِينَbil-mutaqīnaof the righteous

إِنَّمَا يَسْتَـْٔذِنُكَ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ وَٱرْتَابَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ فَهُمْ فِى رَيْبِهِمْ يَتَرَدَّدُونَ

Transliteration innamā yastadhinuka alladhīna lā yu'minūna bil-lahi wal-yawmi l-ākhiri wa-ir'tābat qulūbuhum fahum fī raybihim yataraddadūna

English Only those would ask permission of you who do not believe in Allāh and the Last Day and whose hearts have doubted, and they, in their doubt, are hesitating.

1. إِنَّمَاinnamāOnly
2. يَسْتَـْٔذِنُكَyastadhinukaask your leave
3. ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
4. لَاlā(do) not
5. يُؤْمِنُونَyu'minūnabelieve
6. بِٱللَّهِbil-lahiin Allah
7. وَٱلْيَوْمِwal-yawmiand the Day
8. ٱلْـَٔاخِرِl-ākhirithe Last
9. وَٱرْتَابَتْwa-ir'tābatand (are in) doubts
10. قُلُوبُهُمْqulūbuhumtheir hearts
11. فَهُمْfahumso they
12. فِىfīin
13. رَيْبِهِمْraybihimtheir doubts
14. يَتَرَدَّدُونَyataraddadūnathey waver

۞ وَلَوْ أَرَادُوا۟ ٱلْخُرُوجَ لَأَعَدُّوا۟ لَهُۥ عُدَّةً وَلَـٰكِن كَرِهَ ٱللَّهُ ٱنۢبِعَاثَهُمْ فَثَبَّطَهُمْ وَقِيلَ ٱقْعُدُوا۟ مَعَ ٱلْقَـٰعِدِينَ

Transliteration walaw arādū l-khurūja la-aʿaddū lahu ʿuddatan walākin kariha l-lahu inbiʿāthahum fathabbaṭahum waqīla uq'ʿudū maʿa l-qāʿidīna

English And if they had intended to go forth, they would have prepared for it [some] preparation. But Allāh disliked their being sent, so He kept them back, and they were told, "Remain [behind] with those who remain."

1. ۞ وَلَوْwalawAnd if
2. أَرَادُوا۟arādūthey had wished
3. ٱلْخُرُوجَl-khurūja(to) go forth
4. لَأَعَدُّوا۟la-aʿaddūsurely they (would) have prepared
5. لَهُۥlahufor it
6. عُدَّةًۭʿuddatan(some) preparation
7. وَلَـٰكِنwalākinBut
8. كَرِهَkarihaAllah disliked
9. ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah disliked
10. ٱنۢبِعَاثَهُمْinbiʿāthahumtheir being sent
11. فَثَبَّطَهُمْfathabbaṭahumso He made them lag behind
12. وَقِيلَwaqīlaand it was said
13. ٱقْعُدُوا۟uq'ʿudūSit
14. مَعَmaʿawith
15. ٱلْقَـٰعِدِينَl-qāʿidīnathose who sit

لَوْ خَرَجُوا۟ فِيكُم مَّا زَادُوكُمْ إِلَّا خَبَالًا وَلَأَوْضَعُوا۟ خِلَـٰلَكُمْ يَبْغُونَكُمُ ٱلْفِتْنَةَ وَفِيكُمْ سَمَّـٰعُونَ لَهُمْ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌۢ بِٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

Transliteration law kharajū fīkum mā zādūkum illā khabālan wala-awḍaʿū khilālakum yabghūnakumu l-fit'nata wafīkum sammāʿūna lahum wal-lahu ʿalīmun bil-ẓālimīna

English Had they gone forth with you, they would not have increased you except in confusion, and they would have been active among you, seeking [to cause] you fitnah [i.e., chaos and dissension]. And among you are avid listeners to them. And Allāh is Knowing of the wrongdoers.

1. لَوْlawIf
2. خَرَجُوا۟kharajūthey (had) gone forth
3. فِيكُمfīkumwith you
4. مَّاmānot
5. زَادُوكُمْzādūkumthey (would) have increased you
6. إِلَّاillāexcept
7. خَبَالًۭاkhabālan(in) confusion
8. وَلَأَوْضَعُوا۟wala-awḍaʿūand would have been active
9. خِلَـٰلَكُمْkhilālakumin your midst
10. يَبْغُونَكُمُyabghūnakumuseeking (for) you
11. ٱلْفِتْنَةَl-fit'natadissension
12. وَفِيكُمْwafīkumAnd among you (are some)
13. سَمَّـٰعُونَsammāʿūnawho would have listened
14. لَهُمْ ۗlahumto them
15. وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allah
16. عَلِيمٌۢʿalīmun(is) All-Knower
17. بِٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَbil-ẓālimīnaof the wrongdoers

لَقَدِ ٱبْتَغَوُا۟ ٱلْفِتْنَةَ مِن قَبْلُ وَقَلَّبُوا۟ لَكَ ٱلْأُمُورَ حَتَّىٰ جَآءَ ٱلْحَقُّ وَظَهَرَ أَمْرُ ٱللَّهِ وَهُمْ كَـٰرِهُونَ

Transliteration laqadi ib'taghawū l-fit'nata min qablu waqallabū laka l-umūra ḥattā jāa l-ḥaqu waẓahara amru l-lahi wahum kārihūna

English They had already desired dissension before and had upset matters for you until the truth came and the ordinance [i.e., victory] of Allāh appeared, while they were averse.

1. لَقَدِlaqadiVerily
2. ٱبْتَغَوُا۟ib'taghawūthey had sought
3. ٱلْفِتْنَةَl-fit'natadissension
4. مِنminbefore
5. قَبْلُqablubefore
6. وَقَلَّبُوا۟waqallabūand had upset
7. لَكَlakafor you
8. ٱلْأُمُورَl-umūrathe matters
9. حَتَّىٰḥattāuntil
10. جَآءَjāacame
11. ٱلْحَقُّl-ḥaquthe truth
12. وَظَهَرَwaẓaharaand became manifest
13. أَمْرُamru(the) Order of Allah
14. ٱللَّهِl-lahi(the) Order of Allah
15. وَهُمْwahumwhile they
16. كَـٰرِهُونَkārihūnadisliked (it)

وَمِنْهُم مَّن يَقُولُ ٱئْذَن لِّى وَلَا تَفْتِنِّىٓ ۚ أَلَا فِى ٱلْفِتْنَةِ سَقَطُوا۟ ۗ وَإِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ لَمُحِيطَةٌۢ بِٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

Transliteration wamin'hum man yaqūlu i'dhan lī walā taftinnī alā fī l-fit'nati saqaṭū wa-inna jahannama lamuḥīṭatun bil-kāfirīna

English And among them is he who says, "Permit me [to remain at home] and do not put me to trial." Unquestionably, into trial they have fallen. And indeed, Hell will encompass the disbelievers.

1. وَمِنْهُمwamin'humAnd among them
2. مَّنman(is he) who
3. يَقُولُyaqūlusays
4. ٱئْذَنi'dhanGrant me leave
5. لِّىlīGrant me leave
6. وَلَاwalāand (do) not
7. تَفْتِنِّىٓ ۚtaftinnīput me to trial
8. أَلَاalāSurely
9. فِىfīin
10. ٱلْفِتْنَةِl-fit'natithe trial
11. سَقَطُوا۟ ۗsaqaṭūthey have fallen
12. وَإِنَّwa-innaAnd indeed
13. جَهَنَّمَjahannamaHell
14. لَمُحِيطَةٌۢlamuḥīṭatun(will) surely surround
15. بِٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَbil-kāfirīnathe disbelievers

إِن تُصِبْكَ حَسَنَةٌ تَسُؤْهُمْ ۖ وَإِن تُصِبْكَ مُصِيبَةٌ يَقُولُوا۟ قَدْ أَخَذْنَآ أَمْرَنَا مِن قَبْلُ وَيَتَوَلَّوا۟ وَّهُمْ فَرِحُونَ

Transliteration in tuṣib'ka ḥasanatun tasu'hum wa-in tuṣib'ka muṣībatun yaqūlū qad akhadhnā amranā min qablu wayatawallaw wahum fariḥūna

English If good befalls you, it distresses them; but if disaster strikes you, they say, "We took our matter [in hand] before," and turn away while they are rejoicing.

1. إِنinIf
2. تُصِبْكَtuṣib'kabefalls you
3. حَسَنَةٌۭḥasanatungood
4. تَسُؤْهُمْ ۖtasu'humit distresses them
5. وَإِنwa-inbut if
6. تُصِبْكَtuṣib'kabefalls you
7. مُصِيبَةٌۭmuṣībatuna calamity
8. يَقُولُوا۟yaqūlūthey say
9. قَدْqadVerily
10. أَخَذْنَآakhadhnāwe took
11. أَمْرَنَاamranāour matter
12. مِنminbefore
13. قَبْلُqablubefore
14. وَيَتَوَلَّوا۟wayatawallawAnd they turn away
15. وَّهُمْwahumwhile they
16. فَرِحُونَfariḥūna(are) rejoicing

قُل لَّن يُصِيبَنَآ إِلَّا مَا كَتَبَ ٱللَّهُ لَنَا هُوَ مَوْلَىٰنَا ۚ وَعَلَى ٱللَّهِ فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ

Transliteration qul lan yuṣībanā illā mā kataba l-lahu lanā huwa mawlānā waʿalā l-lahi falyatawakkali l-mu'minūna

English Say, "Never will we be struck except by what Allāh has decreed for us; He is our protector." And upon Allāh let the believers rely.

1. قُلqulSay
2. لَّنlanNever
3. يُصِيبَنَآyuṣībanāwill befall us
4. إِلَّاillāexcept
5. مَاmāwhat
6. كَتَبَkatabaAllah has decreed
7. ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah has decreed
8. لَنَاlanāfor us
9. هُوَhuwaHe
10. مَوْلَىٰنَا ۚmawlānā(is) our Protector
11. وَعَلَىwaʿalāAnd on
12. ٱللَّهِl-lahiAllah
13. فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِfalyatawakkali[so] let the believers put (their) trust
14. ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَl-mu'minūna[so] let the believers put (their) trust

قُلْ هَلْ تَرَبَّصُونَ بِنَآ إِلَّآ إِحْدَى ٱلْحُسْنَيَيْنِ ۖ وَنَحْنُ نَتَرَبَّصُ بِكُمْ أَن يُصِيبَكُمُ ٱللَّهُ بِعَذَابٍ مِّنْ عِندِهِۦٓ أَوْ بِأَيْدِينَا ۖ فَتَرَبَّصُوٓا۟ إِنَّا مَعَكُم مُّتَرَبِّصُونَ

Transliteration qul hal tarabbaṣūna binā illā iḥ'dā l-ḥus'nayayni wanaḥnu natarabbaṣu bikum an yuṣībakumu l-lahu biʿadhābin min ʿindihi aw bi-aydīnā fatarabbaṣū innā maʿakum mutarabbiṣūna

English Say, "Do you await for us except one of the two best things [i.e., martyrdom or victory] while we await for you that Allāh will afflict you with punishment from Himself or at our hands? So wait; indeed we, along with you, are waiting."

1. قُلْqulSay
2. هَلْhalDo
3. تَرَبَّصُونَtarabbaṣūnayou await
4. بِنَآbināfor us
5. إِلَّآillāexcept
6. إِحْدَىiḥ'dāone
7. ٱلْحُسْنَيَيْنِ ۖl-ḥus'nayayni(of) the two best (things)
8. وَنَحْنُwanaḥnuwhile we
9. نَتَرَبَّصُnatarabbaṣu[we] await
10. بِكُمْbikumfor you
11. أَنanthat
12. يُصِيبَكُمُyuṣībakumuAllah will afflict you
13. ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah will afflict you
14. بِعَذَابٍۢbiʿadhābinwith a punishment
15. مِّنْminfrom
16. عِندِهِۦٓʿindihi[near] Him
17. أَوْawor
18. بِأَيْدِينَا ۖbi-aydīnāby our hands
19. فَتَرَبَّصُوٓا۟fatarabbaṣūSo wait
20. إِنَّاinnāindeed, we
21. مَعَكُمmaʿakumwith you
22. مُّتَرَبِّصُونَmutarabbiṣūna(are) waiting

قُلْ أَنفِقُوا۟ طَوْعًا أَوْ كَرْهًا لَّن يُتَقَبَّلَ مِنكُمْ ۖ إِنَّكُمْ كُنتُمْ قَوْمًا فَـٰسِقِينَ

Transliteration qul anfiqū ṭawʿan aw karhan lan yutaqabbala minkum innakum kuntum qawman fāsiqīna

English Say, "Spend willingly or unwillingly; never will it be accepted from you. Indeed, you have been a defiantly disobedient people."

1. قُلْqulSay
2. أَنفِقُوا۟anfiqūSpend
3. طَوْعًاṭawʿanwillingly
4. أَوْawor
5. كَرْهًۭاkarhanunwillingly
6. لَّنlannever
7. يُتَقَبَّلَyutaqabbalawill be accepted
8. مِنكُمْ ۖminkumfrom you
9. إِنَّكُمْinnakumIndeed, you
10. كُنتُمْkuntum[you] are
11. قَوْمًۭاqawmana people
12. فَـٰسِقِينَfāsiqīnadefiantly disobedient

وَمَا مَنَعَهُمْ أَن تُقْبَلَ مِنْهُمْ نَفَقَـٰتُهُمْ إِلَّآ أَنَّهُمْ كَفَرُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَبِرَسُولِهِۦ وَلَا يَأْتُونَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ إِلَّا وَهُمْ كُسَالَىٰ وَلَا يُنفِقُونَ إِلَّا وَهُمْ كَـٰرِهُونَ

Transliteration wamā manaʿahum an tuq'bala min'hum nafaqātuhum illā annahum kafarū bil-lahi wabirasūlihi walā yatūna l-ṣalata illā wahum kusālā walā yunfiqūna illā wahum kārihūna

English And what prevents their expenditures from being accepted from them but that they have disbelieved in Allāh and in His Messenger and that they come not to prayer except while they are lazy and that they do not spend except while they are unwilling.

1. وَمَاwamāAnd not
2. مَنَعَهُمْmanaʿahumprevents them
3. أَنanthat
4. تُقْبَلَtuq'balais accepted
5. مِنْهُمْmin'humfrom them
6. نَفَقَـٰتُهُمْnafaqātuhumtheir contributions
7. إِلَّآillāexcept
8. أَنَّهُمْannahumthat they
9. كَفَرُوا۟kafarūdisbelieve
10. بِٱللَّهِbil-lahiin Allah
11. وَبِرَسُولِهِۦwabirasūlihiand in His Messenger
12. وَلَاwalāand not
13. يَأْتُونَyatūnathey come
14. ٱلصَّلَوٰةَl-ṣalata(to) the prayer
15. إِلَّاillāexcept
16. وَهُمْwahumwhile they
17. كُسَالَىٰkusālā(are) lazy
18. وَلَاwalāand not
19. يُنفِقُونَyunfiqūnathey spend
20. إِلَّاillāexcept
21. وَهُمْwahumwhile they
22. كَـٰرِهُونَkārihūna(are) unwilling

فَلَا تُعْجِبْكَ أَمْوَٰلُهُمْ وَلَآ أَوْلَـٰدُهُمْ ۚ إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ ٱللَّهُ لِيُعَذِّبَهُم بِهَا فِى ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنْيَا وَتَزْهَقَ أَنفُسُهُمْ وَهُمْ كَـٰفِرُونَ

Transliteration falā tuʿ'jib'ka amwāluhum walā awlāduhum innamā yurīdu l-lahu liyuʿadhibahum bihā fī l-ḥayati l-dun'yā watazhaqa anfusuhum wahum kāfirūna

English So let not their wealth or their children impress you. Allāh only intends to punish them through them in worldly life and that their souls should depart [at death] while they are disbelievers.

1. فَلَاfalāSo (let) not
2. تُعْجِبْكَtuʿ'jib'kaimpress you
3. أَمْوَٰلُهُمْamwāluhumtheir wealth
4. وَلَآwalāand not
5. أَوْلَـٰدُهُمْ ۚawlāduhumtheir children
6. إِنَّمَاinnamāOnly
7. يُرِيدُyurīduAllah intends
8. ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah intends
9. لِيُعَذِّبَهُمliyuʿadhibahumto punish them
10. بِهَاbihāwith it
11. فِىfīin
12. ٱلْحَيَوٰةِl-ḥayatithe life
13. ٱلدُّنْيَاl-dun'yā(of) the world
14. وَتَزْهَقَwatazhaqaand should depart
15. أَنفُسُهُمْanfusuhumtheir souls
16. وَهُمْwahumwhile they
17. كَـٰفِرُونَkāfirūna(are) disbelievers

وَيَحْلِفُونَ بِٱللَّهِ إِنَّهُمْ لَمِنكُمْ وَمَا هُم مِّنكُمْ وَلَـٰكِنَّهُمْ قَوْمٌ يَفْرَقُونَ

Transliteration wayaḥlifūna bil-lahi innahum laminkum wamā hum minkum walākinnahum qawmun yafraqūna

English And they swear by Allāh that they are from among you while they are not from among you; but they are a people who are afraid.

1. وَيَحْلِفُونَwayaḥlifūnaAnd they swear
2. بِٱللَّهِbil-lahiby Allah
3. إِنَّهُمْinnahumindeed, they
4. لَمِنكُمْlaminkumsurely (are) of you
5. وَمَاwamāwhile not
6. هُمhumthey
7. مِّنكُمْminkum(are) of you
8. وَلَـٰكِنَّهُمْwalākinnahumbut they
9. قَوْمٌۭqawmun(are) a people
10. يَفْرَقُونَyafraqūna(who) are afraid

لَوْ يَجِدُونَ مَلْجَـًٔا أَوْ مَغَـٰرَٰتٍ أَوْ مُدَّخَلًا لَّوَلَّوْا۟ إِلَيْهِ وَهُمْ يَجْمَحُونَ

Transliteration law yajidūna malja-an aw maghārātin aw muddakhalan lawallaw ilayhi wahum yajmaḥūna

English If they could find a refuge or some caves or any place to enter [and hide], they would turn to it while they run heedlessly.

1. لَوْlawIf
2. يَجِدُونَyajidūnathey could find
3. مَلْجَـًٔاmalja-ana refuge
4. أَوْawor
5. مَغَـٰرَٰتٍmaghārātincaves
6. أَوْawor
7. مُدَّخَلًۭاmuddakhalana place to enter
8. لَّوَلَّوْا۟lawallawsurely, they would turn
9. إِلَيْهِilayhito it
10. وَهُمْwahumand they
11. يَجْمَحُونَyajmaḥūnarun wild

وَمِنْهُم مَّن يَلْمِزُكَ فِى ٱلصَّدَقَـٰتِ فَإِنْ أُعْطُوا۟ مِنْهَا رَضُوا۟ وَإِن لَّمْ يُعْطَوْا۟ مِنْهَآ إِذَا هُمْ يَسْخَطُونَ

Transliteration wamin'hum man yalmizuka fī l-ṣadaqāti fa-in uʿ'ṭū min'hā raḍū wa-in lam yuʿ'ṭaw min'hā idhā hum yaskhaṭūna

English And among them are some who criticize you concerning the [distribution of] charities. If they are given from them, they approve; but if they are not given from them, at once they become angry.

1. وَمِنْهُمwamin'humAnd among them
2. مَّنman(is he) who
3. يَلْمِزُكَyalmizukacriticizes you
4. فِىfīconcerning
5. ٱلصَّدَقَـٰتِl-ṣadaqātithe charities
6. فَإِنْfa-inThen if
7. أُعْطُوا۟uʿ'ṭūthey are given
8. مِنْهَاmin'hāfrom it
9. رَضُوا۟raḍūthey are pleased
10. وَإِنwa-inbut if
11. لَّمْlamnot
12. يُعْطَوْا۟yuʿ'ṭawthey are given
13. مِنْهَآmin'hāfrom it
14. إِذَاidhāthen
15. هُمْhumthey
16. يَسْخَطُونَyaskhaṭūna(are) enraged

وَلَوْ أَنَّهُمْ رَضُوا۟ مَآ ءَاتَىٰهُمُ ٱللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُۥ وَقَالُوا۟ حَسْبُنَا ٱللَّهُ سَيُؤْتِينَا ٱللَّهُ مِن فَضْلِهِۦ وَرَسُولُهُۥٓ إِنَّآ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ رَٰغِبُونَ

Transliteration walaw annahum raḍū mā ātāhumu l-lahu warasūluhu waqālū ḥasbunā l-lahu sayu'tīnā l-lahu min faḍlihi warasūluhu innā ilā l-lahi rāghibūna

English If only they had been satisfied with what Allāh and His Messenger gave them and said, "Sufficient for us is Allāh; Allāh will give us of His bounty, and [so will] His Messenger; indeed, we are desirous toward Allāh," [it would have been better for them].

1. وَلَوْwalawAnd if
2. أَنَّهُمْannahum[that] they
3. رَضُوا۟raḍū(were) satisfied
4. مَآmā(with) what
5. ءَاتَىٰهُمُātāhumuAllah gave them
6. ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah gave them
7. وَرَسُولُهُۥwarasūluhuand His Messenger
8. وَقَالُوا۟waqālūand said
9. حَسْبُنَاḥasbunāSufficient for us
10. ٱللَّهُl-lahu(is) Allah
11. سَيُؤْتِينَاsayu'tīnāAllah will give us
12. ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah will give us
13. مِنminof
14. فَضْلِهِۦfaḍlihiHis Bounty
15. وَرَسُولُهُۥٓwarasūluhuand His Messenger
16. إِنَّآinnāIndeed, we
17. إِلَىilāto
18. ٱللَّهِl-lahiAllah
19. رَٰغِبُونَrāghibūnaturn our hopes

۞ إِنَّمَا ٱلصَّدَقَـٰتُ لِلْفُقَرَآءِ وَٱلْمَسَـٰكِينِ وَٱلْعَـٰمِلِينَ عَلَيْهَا وَٱلْمُؤَلَّفَةِ قُلُوبُهُمْ وَفِى ٱلرِّقَابِ وَٱلْغَـٰرِمِينَ وَفِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ وَٱبْنِ ٱلسَّبِيلِ ۖ فَرِيضَةً مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ

Transliteration innamā l-ṣadaqātu lil'fuqarāi wal-masākīni wal-ʿāmilīna ʿalayhā wal-mu-alafati qulūbuhum wafī l-riqābi wal-ghārimīna wafī sabīli l-lahi wa-ib'ni l-sabīli farīḍatan mina l-lahi wal-lahu ʿalīmun ḥakīmun

English Zakāh expenditures are only for the poor and for the needy and for those employed for it and for bringing hearts together [for Islām] and for freeing captives [or slaves] and for those in debt and for the cause of Allāh and for the [stranded] traveler - an obligation [imposed] by Allāh. And Allāh is Knowing and Wise.

1. ۞ إِنَّمَاinnamāOnly
2. ٱلصَّدَقَـٰتُl-ṣadaqātuthe charities
3. لِلْفُقَرَآءِlil'fuqarāi(are) for the poor
4. وَٱلْمَسَـٰكِينِwal-masākīniand the needy
5. وَٱلْعَـٰمِلِينَwal-ʿāmilīnaand those who collect
6. عَلَيْهَاʿalayhāthem
7. وَٱلْمُؤَلَّفَةِwal-mu-alafatiand the ones inclined
8. قُلُوبُهُمْqulūbuhumtheir hearts
9. وَفِىwafīand in
10. ٱلرِّقَابِl-riqābithe (freeing of) the necks
11. وَٱلْغَـٰرِمِينَwal-ghārimīnaand for those in debt
12. وَفِىwafīand in
13. سَبِيلِsabīli(the) way
14. ٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allah
15. وَٱبْنِwa-ib'niand the wayfarer
16. ٱلسَّبِيلِ ۖl-sabīliand the wayfarer
17. فَرِيضَةًۭfarīḍatanan obligation
18. مِّنَminafrom
19. ٱللَّهِ ۗl-lahiAllah
20. وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allah
21. عَلِيمٌʿalīmun(is) All-Knowing
22. حَكِيمٌۭḥakīmunAll-Wise

وَمِنْهُمُ ٱلَّذِينَ يُؤْذُونَ ٱلنَّبِىَّ وَيَقُولُونَ هُوَ أُذُنٌ ۚ قُلْ أُذُنُ خَيْرٍ لَّكُمْ يُؤْمِنُ بِٱللَّهِ وَيُؤْمِنُ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَرَحْمَةٌ لِّلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مِنكُمْ ۚ وَٱلَّذِينَ يُؤْذُونَ رَسُولَ ٱللَّهِ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ

Transliteration wamin'humu alladhīna yu'dhūna l-nabiya wayaqūlūna huwa udhunun qul udhunu khayrin lakum yu'minu bil-lahi wayu'minu lil'mu'minīna waraḥmatun lilladhīna āmanū minkum wa-alladhīna yu'dhūna rasūla l-lahi lahum ʿadhābun alīmun

English And among them are those who abuse the Prophet and say, "He is an ear." Say, "[It is] an ear of goodness for you that believes in Allāh and believes the believers and [is] a mercy to those who believe among you." And those who abuse the Messenger of Allāh - for them is a painful punishment.

1. وَمِنْهُمُwamin'humuAnd among them
2. ٱلَّذِينَalladhīna(are) those who
3. يُؤْذُونَyu'dhūnahurt
4. ٱلنَّبِىَّl-nabiyathe Prophet
5. وَيَقُولُونَwayaqūlūnaand they say
6. هُوَhuwaHe is
7. أُذُنٌۭ ۚudhunun(all) ear
8. قُلْqulSay
9. أُذُنُudhunuAn ear
10. خَيْرٍۢkhayrin(of) goodness
11. لَّكُمْlakumfor you
12. يُؤْمِنُyu'minuhe believes
13. بِٱللَّهِbil-lahiin Allah
14. وَيُؤْمِنُwayu'minuand believes
15. لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَlil'mu'minīnathe believers
16. وَرَحْمَةٌۭwaraḥmatunand (is) a mercy
17. لِّلَّذِينَlilladhīnato those who
18. ءَامَنُوا۟āmanūbelieve
19. مِنكُمْ ۚminkumamong you
20. وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those who
21. يُؤْذُونَyu'dhūnahurt
22. رَسُولَrasūla(the) Messenger
23. ٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allah
24. لَهُمْlahumfor them
25. عَذَابٌʿadhābun(is) a punishment
26. أَلِيمٌۭalīmunpainful

يَحْلِفُونَ بِٱللَّهِ لَكُمْ لِيُرْضُوكُمْ وَٱللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُۥٓ أَحَقُّ أَن يُرْضُوهُ إِن كَانُوا۟ مُؤْمِنِينَ

Transliteration yaḥlifūna bil-lahi lakum liyur'ḍūkum wal-lahu warasūluhu aḥaqqu an yur'ḍūhu in kānū mu'minīna

English They swear by Allāh to you [Muslims] to satisfy you. But Allāh and His Messenger are more worthy for them to satisfy, if they were to be believers.

1. يَحْلِفُونَyaḥlifūnaThey swear
2. بِٱللَّهِbil-lahiby Allah
3. لَكُمْlakumto you
4. لِيُرْضُوكُمْliyur'ḍūkumto please you
5. وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allah
6. وَرَسُولُهُۥٓwarasūluhuand His Messenger
7. أَحَقُّaḥaqqu(have) more right
8. أَنanthat
9. يُرْضُوهُyur'ḍūhuthey should please Him
10. إِنinif
11. كَانُوا۟kānūthey are
12. مُؤْمِنِينَmu'minīnabelievers

أَلَمْ يَعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّهُۥ مَن يُحَادِدِ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ فَأَنَّ لَهُۥ نَارَ جَهَنَّمَ خَـٰلِدًا فِيهَا ۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْخِزْىُ ٱلْعَظِيمُ

Transliteration alam yaʿlamū annahu man yuḥādidi l-laha warasūlahu fa-anna lahu nāra jahannama khālidan fīhā dhālika l-khiz'yu l-ʿaẓīmu

English Do they not know that whoever opposes Allāh and His Messenger - that for him is the fire of Hell, wherein he will abide eternally? That is the great disgrace.

1. أَلَمْalamDo not
2. يَعْلَمُوٓا۟yaʿlamūthey know
3. أَنَّهُۥannahuthat he
4. مَنmanwho
5. يُحَادِدِyuḥādidiopposes
6. ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
7. وَرَسُولَهُۥwarasūlahuand His Messenger
8. فَأَنَّfa-anna[then] that
9. لَهُۥlahufor him
10. نَارَnāra(is the) Fire
11. جَهَنَّمَjahannama(of) Hell
12. خَـٰلِدًۭاkhālidan(will) abide forever
13. فِيهَا ۚfīhāin it
14. ذَٰلِكَdhālikaThat
15. ٱلْخِزْىُl-khiz'yu(is) the disgrace
16. ٱلْعَظِيمُl-ʿaẓīmuthe great

يَحْذَرُ ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقُونَ أَن تُنَزَّلَ عَلَيْهِمْ سُورَةٌ تُنَبِّئُهُم بِمَا فِى قُلُوبِهِمْ ۚ قُلِ ٱسْتَهْزِءُوٓا۟ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ مُخْرِجٌ مَّا تَحْذَرُونَ

Transliteration yaḥdharu l-munāfiqūna an tunazzala ʿalayhim sūratun tunabbi-uhum bimā fī qulūbihim quli is'tahziū inna l-laha mukh'rijun mā taḥdharūna

English The hypocrites are apprehensive lest a sūrah be revealed about them, informing them of what is in their hearts. Say, "Mock [as you wish]; indeed, Allāh will expose that which you fear."

1. يَحْذَرُyaḥdharuFear
2. ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقُونَl-munāfiqūnathe hypocrites
3. أَنanlest
4. تُنَزَّلَtunazzalabe revealed
5. عَلَيْهِمْʿalayhimabout them
6. سُورَةٌۭsūratuna Surah
7. تُنَبِّئُهُمtunabbi-uhuminforming them
8. بِمَاbimāof what
9. فِىfī(is) in
10. قُلُوبِهِمْ ۚqulūbihimtheir hearts
11. قُلِquliSay
12. ٱسْتَهْزِءُوٓا۟is'tahziūMock
13. إِنَّinnaindeed
14. ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
15. مُخْرِجٌۭmukh'rijun(will) bring forth
16. مَّاmāwhat
17. تَحْذَرُونَtaḥdharūnayou fear

وَلَئِن سَأَلْتَهُمْ لَيَقُولُنَّ إِنَّمَا كُنَّا نَخُوضُ وَنَلْعَبُ ۚ قُلْ أَبِٱللَّهِ وَءَايَـٰتِهِۦ وَرَسُولِهِۦ كُنتُمْ تَسْتَهْزِءُونَ

Transliteration wala-in sa-altahum layaqūlunna innamā kunnā nakhūḍu wanalʿabu qul abil-lahi waāyātihi warasūlihi kuntum tastahziūna

English And if you ask them, they will surely say, "We were only conversing and playing." Say, "Is it Allāh and His verses and His Messenger that you were mocking?"

1. وَلَئِنwala-inAnd if
2. سَأَلْتَهُمْsa-altahumyou ask them
3. لَيَقُولُنَّlayaqūlunnasurely they will say
4. إِنَّمَاinnamāOnly
5. كُنَّاkunnāwe were
6. نَخُوضُnakhūḍuconversing
7. وَنَلْعَبُ ۚwanalʿabuand playing
8. قُلْqulSay
9. أَبِٱللَّهِabil-lahiIs it Allah
10. وَءَايَـٰتِهِۦwaāyātihiand His Verses
11. وَرَسُولِهِۦwarasūlihiand His Messenger
12. كُنتُمْkuntum(that) you were
13. تَسْتَهْزِءُونَtastahziūnamocking

لَا تَعْتَذِرُوا۟ قَدْ كَفَرْتُم بَعْدَ إِيمَـٰنِكُمْ ۚ إِن نَّعْفُ عَن طَآئِفَةٍ مِّنكُمْ نُعَذِّبْ طَآئِفَةًۢ بِأَنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ مُجْرِمِينَ

Transliteration lā taʿtadhirū qad kafartum baʿda īmānikum in naʿfu ʿan ṭāifatin minkum nuʿadhib ṭāifatan bi-annahum kānū muj'rimīna

English Make no excuse; you have disbelieved [i.e., rejected faith] after your belief. If We pardon one faction of you - We will punish another faction because they were criminals.

1. لَاlā(Do) not
2. تَعْتَذِرُوا۟taʿtadhirūmake excuse
3. قَدْqadverily
4. كَفَرْتُمkafartumyou have disbelieved
5. بَعْدَbaʿdaafter
6. إِيمَـٰنِكُمْ ۚīmānikumyour belief
7. إِنinIf
8. نَّعْفُnaʿfuWe pardon
9. عَنʿan[on]
10. طَآئِفَةٍۢṭāifatina party
11. مِّنكُمْminkumof you
12. نُعَذِّبْnuʿadhibWe will punish
13. طَآئِفَةًۢṭāifatana party
14. بِأَنَّهُمْbi-annahumbecause they
15. كَانُوا۟kānūwere
16. مُجْرِمِينَmuj'rimīnacriminals

ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقُونَ وَٱلْمُنَـٰفِقَـٰتُ بَعْضُهُم مِّنۢ بَعْضٍ ۚ يَأْمُرُونَ بِٱلْمُنكَرِ وَيَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ ٱلْمَعْرُوفِ وَيَقْبِضُونَ أَيْدِيَهُمْ ۚ نَسُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ فَنَسِيَهُمْ ۗ إِنَّ ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ هُمُ ٱلْفَـٰسِقُونَ

Transliteration al-munāfiqūna wal-munāfiqātu baʿḍuhum min baʿḍin yamurūna bil-munkari wayanhawna ʿani l-maʿrūfi wayaqbiḍūna aydiyahum nasū l-laha fanasiyahum inna l-munāfiqīna humu l-fāsiqūna

English The hypocrite men and hypocrite women are of one another. They enjoin what is wrong and forbid what is right and close their hands. They have forgotten Allāh, so He has forgotten them [accordingly]. Indeed, the hypocrites - it is they who are the defiantly disobedient.

1. ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقُونَal-munāfiqūnaThe hypocrite men
2. وَٱلْمُنَـٰفِقَـٰتُwal-munāfiqātuand the hypocrite women
3. بَعْضُهُمbaʿḍuhumsome of them
4. مِّنۢmin(are) of
5. بَعْضٍۢ ۚbaʿḍinothers
6. يَأْمُرُونَyamurūnaThey enjoin
7. بِٱلْمُنكَرِbil-munkarithe wrong
8. وَيَنْهَوْنَwayanhawnaand forbid
9. عَنِʿaniwhat
10. ٱلْمَعْرُوفِl-maʿrūfi(is) the right
11. وَيَقْبِضُونَwayaqbiḍūnaand they close
12. أَيْدِيَهُمْ ۚaydiyahumtheir hands
13. نَسُوا۟nasūThey forget
14. ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
15. فَنَسِيَهُمْ ۗfanasiyahumso He has forgotten them
16. إِنَّinnaIndeed
17. ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَl-munāfiqīnathe hypocrites
18. هُمُhumuthey (are)
19. ٱلْفَـٰسِقُونَl-fāsiqūnathe defiantly disobedient

وَعَدَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ وَٱلْمُنَـٰفِقَـٰتِ وَٱلْكُفَّارَ نَارَ جَهَنَّمَ خَـٰلِدِينَ فِيهَا ۚ هِىَ حَسْبُهُمْ ۚ وَلَعَنَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ ۖ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ مُّقِيمٌ

Transliteration waʿada l-lahu l-munāfiqīna wal-munāfiqāti wal-kufāra nāra jahannama khālidīna fīhā hiya ḥasbuhum walaʿanahumu l-lahu walahum ʿadhābun muqīmun

English Allāh has promised the hypocrite men and hypocrite women and the disbelievers the fire of Hell, wherein they will abide eternally. It is sufficient for them. And Allāh has cursed them, and for them is an enduring punishment.

1. وَعَدَwaʿadaAllah has promised
2. ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah has promised
3. ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَl-munāfiqīnathe hypocrite men
4. وَٱلْمُنَـٰفِقَـٰتِwal-munāfiqātiand the hypocrite women
5. وَٱلْكُفَّارَwal-kufāraand the disbelievers
6. نَارَnāraFire
7. جَهَنَّمَjahannama(of) Hell
8. خَـٰلِدِينَkhālidīnathey (will) abide forever
9. فِيهَا ۚfīhāin it
10. هِىَhiyaIt (is)
11. حَسْبُهُمْ ۚḥasbuhumsufficient for them
12. وَلَعَنَهُمُwalaʿanahumuAnd Allah has cursed them
13. ٱللَّهُ ۖl-lahuAnd Allah has cursed them
14. وَلَهُمْwalahumand for them
15. عَذَابٌۭʿadhābun(is) a punishment
16. مُّقِيمٌۭmuqīmunenduring

كَٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ كَانُوٓا۟ أَشَدَّ مِنكُمْ قُوَّةً وَأَكْثَرَ أَمْوَٰلًا وَأَوْلَـٰدًا فَٱسْتَمْتَعُوا۟ بِخَلَـٰقِهِمْ فَٱسْتَمْتَعْتُم بِخَلَـٰقِكُمْ كَمَا ٱسْتَمْتَعَ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُم بِخَلَـٰقِهِمْ وَخُضْتُمْ كَٱلَّذِى خَاضُوٓا۟ ۚ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ حَبِطَتْ أَعْمَـٰلُهُمْ فِى ٱلدُّنْيَا وَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ ۖ وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْخَـٰسِرُونَ

Transliteration ka-alladhīna min qablikum kānū ashadda minkum quwwatan wa-akthara amwālan wa-awlādan fa-is'tamtaʿū bikhalāqihim fa-is'tamtaʿtum bikhalāqikum kamā is'tamtaʿa alladhīna min qablikum bikhalāqihim wakhuḍ'tum ka-alladhī khāḍū ulāika ḥabiṭat aʿmāluhum fī l-dun'yā wal-ākhirati wa-ulāika humu l-khāsirūna

English [You disbelievers are] like those before you; they were stronger than you in power and more abundant in wealth and children. They enjoyed their portion [of worldly enjoyment], and you have enjoyed your portion as those before you enjoyed their portion, and you have engaged [in vanities] like that in which they engaged. [It is] those whose deeds have become worthless in this world and in the Hereafter, and it is they who are the losers.

1. كَٱلَّذِينَka-alladhīnaLike those
2. مِنminbefore you
3. قَبْلِكُمْqablikumbefore you
4. كَانُوٓا۟kānūthey were
5. أَشَدَّashaddamightier
6. مِنكُمْminkumthan you
7. قُوَّةًۭquwwatan(in) strength
8. وَأَكْثَرَwa-aktharaand more abundant
9. أَمْوَٰلًۭاamwālan(in) wealth
10. وَأَوْلَـٰدًۭاwa-awlādanand children
11. فَٱسْتَمْتَعُوا۟fa-is'tamtaʿūSo they enjoyed
12. بِخَلَـٰقِهِمْbikhalāqihimtheir portion
13. فَٱسْتَمْتَعْتُمfa-is'tamtaʿtumand you have enjoyed
14. بِخَلَـٰقِكُمْbikhalāqikumyour portion
15. كَمَاkamālike
16. ٱسْتَمْتَعَis'tamtaʿaenjoyed
17. ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose
18. مِنminbefore you
19. قَبْلِكُمqablikumbefore you
20. بِخَلَـٰقِهِمْbikhalāqihimtheir portion
21. وَخُضْتُمْwakhuḍ'tumand you indulge
22. كَٱلَّذِىka-alladhīlike the one who
23. خَاضُوٓا۟ ۚkhāḍūindulges (in idle talk)
24. أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَulāikaThose
25. حَبِطَتْḥabiṭatworthless
26. أَعْمَـٰلُهُمْaʿmāluhum(are) their deeds
27. فِىfīin
28. ٱلدُّنْيَاl-dun'yāthe world
29. وَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ ۖwal-ākhiratiand (in) the Hereafter
30. وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَwa-ulāikaAnd those
31. هُمُhumuthey
32. ٱلْخَـٰسِرُونَl-khāsirūna(are) the losers

أَلَمْ يَأْتِهِمْ نَبَأُ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ قَوْمِ نُوحٍ وَعَادٍ وَثَمُودَ وَقَوْمِ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ وَأَصْحَـٰبِ مَدْيَنَ وَٱلْمُؤْتَفِكَـٰتِ ۚ أَتَتْهُمْ رُسُلُهُم بِٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتِ ۖ فَمَا كَانَ ٱللَّهُ لِيَظْلِمَهُمْ وَلَـٰكِن كَانُوٓا۟ أَنفُسَهُمْ يَظْلِمُونَ

Transliteration alam yatihim naba-u alladhīna min qablihim qawmi nūḥin waʿādin wathamūda waqawmi ib'rāhīma wa-aṣḥābi madyana wal-mu'tafikāti atathum rusuluhum bil-bayināti famā kāna l-lahu liyaẓlimahum walākin kānū anfusahum yaẓlimūna

English Has there not reached them the news of those before them - the people of Noah and [the tribes of] ʿAad and Thamūd and the people of Abraham and the companions [i.e., dwellers] of Madyan and the towns overturned? Their messengers came to them with clear proofs. And Allāh would never have wronged them, but they were wronging themselves.

1. أَلَمْalamHas not
2. يَأْتِهِمْyatihimcome to them
3. نَبَأُnaba-u(the) news
4. ٱلَّذِينَalladhīna(of) those who
5. مِنmin(were) before them
6. قَبْلِهِمْqablihim(were) before them
7. قَوْمِqawmi(the) people
8. نُوحٍۢnūḥin(of) Nuh
9. وَعَادٍۢwaʿādinand Aad
10. وَثَمُودَwathamūdaand Thamud
11. وَقَوْمِwaqawmiand (the) people
12. إِبْرَٰهِيمَib'rāhīma(of) Ibrahim
13. وَأَصْحَـٰبِwa-aṣḥābiand (the) companions
14. مَدْيَنَmadyana(of) Madyan
15. وَٱلْمُؤْتَفِكَـٰتِ ۚwal-mu'tafikātiand the towns overturned
16. أَتَتْهُمْatathumCame to them
17. رُسُلُهُمrusuluhumtheir Messengers
18. بِٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتِ ۖbil-bayinātiwith clear proofs
19. فَمَاfamāAnd not
20. كَانَkānawas
21. ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
22. لِيَظْلِمَهُمْliyaẓlimahumto wrong them
23. وَلَـٰكِنwalākinbut
24. كَانُوٓا۟kānūthey were (to)
25. أَنفُسَهُمْanfusahumthemselves
26. يَظْلِمُونَyaẓlimūnadoing wrong

وَٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتُ بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلِيَآءُ بَعْضٍ ۚ يَأْمُرُونَ بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ وَيَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ ٱلْمُنكَرِ وَيُقِيمُونَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَيُؤْتُونَ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَيُطِيعُونَ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥٓ ۚ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ سَيَرْحَمُهُمُ ٱللَّهُ ۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ

Transliteration wal-mu'minūna wal-mu'minātu baʿḍuhum awliyāu baʿḍin yamurūna bil-maʿrūfi wayanhawna ʿani l-munkari wayuqīmūna l-ṣalata wayu'tūna l-zakata wayuṭīʿūna l-laha warasūlahu ulāika sayarḥamuhumu l-lahu inna l-laha ʿazīzun ḥakīmun

English The believing men and believing women are allies of one another. They enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and establish prayer and give zakāh and obey Allāh and His Messenger. Those - Allāh will have mercy upon them. Indeed, Allāh is Exalted in Might and Wise.

1. وَٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَwal-mu'minūnaAnd the believing men
2. وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتُwal-mu'minātuand the believing women
3. بَعْضُهُمْbaʿḍuhumsome of them
4. أَوْلِيَآءُawliyāu(are) allies
5. بَعْضٍۢ ۚbaʿḍin(of) others
6. يَأْمُرُونَyamurūnaThey enjoin
7. بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِbil-maʿrūfithe right
8. وَيَنْهَوْنَwayanhawnaand forbid
9. عَنِʿanifrom
10. ٱلْمُنكَرِl-munkarithe wrong
11. وَيُقِيمُونَwayuqīmūnaand they establish
12. ٱلصَّلَوٰةَl-ṣalatathe prayer
13. وَيُؤْتُونَwayu'tūnaand give
14. ٱلزَّكَوٰةَl-zakatathe zakah
15. وَيُطِيعُونَwayuṭīʿūnaand they obey
16. ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
17. وَرَسُولَهُۥٓ ۚwarasūlahuand His Messenger
18. أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَulāikaThose
19. سَيَرْحَمُهُمُsayarḥamuhumuAllah will have mercy on them
20. ٱللَّهُ ۗl-lahuAllah will have mercy on them
21. إِنَّinnaIndeed
22. ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
23. عَزِيزٌʿazīzun(is) All-Mighty
24. حَكِيمٌۭḥakīmunAll-Wise

وَعَدَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتِ جَنَّـٰتٍ تَجْرِى مِن تَحْتِهَا ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ خَـٰلِدِينَ فِيهَا وَمَسَـٰكِنَ طَيِّبَةً فِى جَنَّـٰتِ عَدْنٍ ۚ وَرِضْوَٰنٌ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ أَكْبَرُ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ هُوَ ٱلْفَوْزُ ٱلْعَظِيمُ

Transliteration waʿada l-lahu l-mu'minīna wal-mu'mināti jannātin tajrī min taḥtihā l-anhāru khālidīna fīhā wamasākina ṭayyibatan fī jannāti ʿadnin wariḍ'wānun mina l-lahi akbaru dhālika huwa l-fawzu l-ʿaẓīmu

English Allāh has promised the believing men and believing women gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally, and pleasant dwellings in gardens of perpetual residence; but approval from Allāh is greater. It is that which is the great attainment.

1. وَعَدَwaʿada(Has been) promised
2. ٱللَّهُl-lahu(by) Allah
3. ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَl-mu'minīna(to) the believing men
4. وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتِwal-mu'minātiand the believing women
5. جَنَّـٰتٍۢjannātinGardens
6. تَجْرِىtajrīflow
7. مِنminfrom
8. تَحْتِهَاtaḥtihāunderneath it
9. ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُl-anhāruthe rivers
10. خَـٰلِدِينَkhālidīna(will) abide forever
11. فِيهَاfīhāin it
12. وَمَسَـٰكِنَwamasākinaand dwellings
13. طَيِّبَةًۭṭayyibatanblessed
14. فِىfīin
15. جَنَّـٰتِjannātiGardens
16. عَدْنٍۢ ۚʿadnin(of) everlasting bliss
17. وَرِضْوَٰنٌۭwariḍ'wānunBut the pleasure
18. مِّنَminaof
19. ٱللَّهِl-lahiAllah
20. أَكْبَرُ ۚakbaru(is) greater
21. ذَٰلِكَdhālikaThat
22. هُوَhuwait
23. ٱلْفَوْزُl-fawzu(is) the success
24. ٱلْعَظِيمُl-ʿaẓīmugreat

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّبِىُّ جَـٰهِدِ ٱلْكُفَّارَ وَٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ وَٱغْلُظْ عَلَيْهِمْ ۚ وَمَأْوَىٰهُمْ جَهَنَّمُ ۖ وَبِئْسَ ٱلْمَصِيرُ

Transliteration yāayyuhā l-nabiyu jāhidi l-kufāra wal-munāfiqīna wa-ugh'luẓ ʿalayhim wamawāhum jahannamu wabi'sa l-maṣīru

English O Prophet, fight against the disbelievers and the hypocrites and be harsh upon them. And their refuge is Hell, and wretched is the destination.

1. يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāO Prophet
2. ٱلنَّبِىُّl-nabiyuO Prophet
3. جَـٰهِدِjāhidiStrive (against)
4. ٱلْكُفَّارَl-kufārathe disbelievers
5. وَٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَwal-munāfiqīnaand the hypocrites
6. وَٱغْلُظْwa-ugh'luẓand be stern
7. عَلَيْهِمْ ۚʿalayhimwith them
8. وَمَأْوَىٰهُمْwamawāhumAnd their abode
9. جَهَنَّمُ ۖjahannamu(is) Hell
10. وَبِئْسَwabi'saand wretched
11. ٱلْمَصِيرُl-maṣīru(is) the destination

يَحْلِفُونَ بِٱللَّهِ مَا قَالُوا۟ وَلَقَدْ قَالُوا۟ كَلِمَةَ ٱلْكُفْرِ وَكَفَرُوا۟ بَعْدَ إِسْلَـٰمِهِمْ وَهَمُّوا۟ بِمَا لَمْ يَنَالُوا۟ ۚ وَمَا نَقَمُوٓا۟ إِلَّآ أَنْ أَغْنَىٰهُمُ ٱللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُۥ مِن فَضْلِهِۦ ۚ فَإِن يَتُوبُوا۟ يَكُ خَيْرًا لَّهُمْ ۖ وَإِن يَتَوَلَّوْا۟ يُعَذِّبْهُمُ ٱللَّهُ عَذَابًا أَلِيمًا فِى ٱلدُّنْيَا وَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ ۚ وَمَا لَهُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ مِن وَلِىٍّ وَلَا نَصِيرٍ

Transliteration yaḥlifūna bil-lahi mā qālū walaqad qālū kalimata l-kuf'ri wakafarū baʿda is'lāmihim wahammū bimā lam yanālū wamā naqamū illā an aghnāhumu l-lahu warasūluhu min faḍlihi fa-in yatūbū yaku khayran lahum wa-in yatawallaw yuʿadhib'humu l-lahu ʿadhāban alīman fī l-dun'yā wal-ākhirati wamā lahum fī l-arḍi min waliyyin walā naṣīrin

English They swear by Allāh that they did not say [anything against the Prophet (ﷺ)] while they had said the word of disbelief and disbelieved after their [pretense of] Islām and planned that which they were not to attain. And they were not resentful except [for the fact] that Allāh and His Messenger had enriched them of His bounty. So if they repent, it is better for them; but if they turn away, Allāh will punish them with a painful punishment in this world and the Hereafter. And there will not be for them on earth any protector or helper.

1. يَحْلِفُونَyaḥlifūnaThey swear
2. بِٱللَّهِbil-lahiby Allah
3. مَاmā(that) they said nothing
4. قَالُوا۟qālū(that) they said nothing
5. وَلَقَدْwalaqadwhile certainly
6. قَالُوا۟qālūthey said
7. كَلِمَةَkalimata(the) word
8. ٱلْكُفْرِl-kuf'ri(of) the disbelief
9. وَكَفَرُوا۟wakafarūand disbelieved
10. بَعْدَbaʿdaafter
11. إِسْلَـٰمِهِمْis'lāmihimtheir (pretense of) Islam
12. وَهَمُّوا۟wahammūand planned
13. بِمَاbimā[of] what
14. لَمْlamnot
15. يَنَالُوا۟ ۚyanālūthey could attain
16. وَمَاwamāAnd not
17. نَقَمُوٓا۟naqamūthey were resentful
18. إِلَّآillāexcept
19. أَنْanthat
20. أَغْنَىٰهُمُaghnāhumuAllah had enriched them
21. ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah had enriched them
22. وَرَسُولُهُۥwarasūluhuand His Messenger
23. مِنminof
24. فَضْلِهِۦ ۚfaḍlihiHis Bounty
25. فَإِنfa-inSo if
26. يَتُوبُوا۟yatūbūthey repent
27. يَكُyakuit is
28. خَيْرًۭاkhayranbetter
29. لَّهُمْ ۖlahumfor them
30. وَإِنwa-inand if
31. يَتَوَلَّوْا۟yatawallawthey turn away
32. يُعَذِّبْهُمُyuʿadhib'humuAllah will punish them
33. ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah will punish them
34. عَذَابًاʿadhāban(with) a punishment
35. أَلِيمًۭاalīmanpainful
36. فِىfīin
37. ٱلدُّنْيَاl-dun'yāthe world
38. وَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ ۚwal-ākhiratiand (in) the Hereafter
39. وَمَاwamāAnd not
40. لَهُمْlahumfor them
41. فِىfīin
42. ٱلْأَرْضِl-arḍithe earth
43. مِنminany
44. وَلِىٍّۢwaliyyinprotector
45. وَلَاwalāand not
46. نَصِيرٍۢnaṣīrina helper

۞ وَمِنْهُم مَّنْ عَـٰهَدَ ٱللَّهَ لَئِنْ ءَاتَىٰنَا مِن فَضْلِهِۦ لَنَصَّدَّقَنَّ وَلَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ

Transliteration wamin'hum man ʿāhada l-laha la-in ātānā min faḍlihi lanaṣṣaddaqanna walanakūnanna mina l-ṣāliḥīna

English And among them are those who made a covenant with Allāh, [saying], "If He should give us from His bounty, we will surely spend in charity, and we will surely be among the righteous."

1. ۞ وَمِنْهُمwamin'humAnd among them
2. مَّنْman(is he) who
3. عَـٰهَدَʿāhadamade a covenant
4. ٱللَّهَl-laha(with) Allah
5. لَئِنْla-inIf
6. ءَاتَىٰنَاātānāHe gives us
7. مِنminof
8. فَضْلِهِۦfaḍlihiHis bounty
9. لَنَصَّدَّقَنَّlanaṣṣaddaqannasurely we will give charity
10. وَلَنَكُونَنَّwalanakūnannaand surely we will be
11. مِنَminaamong
12. ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَl-ṣāliḥīnathe righteous

فَلَمَّآ ءَاتَىٰهُم مِّن فَضْلِهِۦ بَخِلُوا۟ بِهِۦ وَتَوَلَّوا۟ وَّهُم مُّعْرِضُونَ

Transliteration falammā ātāhum min faḍlihi bakhilū bihi watawallaw wahum muʿ'riḍūna

English But when He gave them from His bounty, they were stingy with it and turned away while they refused.

1. فَلَمَّآfalammāBut when
2. ءَاتَىٰهُمātāhumHe gave them
3. مِّنminof
4. فَضْلِهِۦfaḍlihiHis Bounty
5. بَخِلُوا۟bakhilūthey became stingy
6. بِهِۦbihiwith it
7. وَتَوَلَّوا۟watawallawand turned away
8. وَّهُمwahumwhile they
9. مُّعْرِضُونَmuʿ'riḍūna(were) averse

فَأَعْقَبَهُمْ نِفَاقًا فِى قُلُوبِهِمْ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يَلْقَوْنَهُۥ بِمَآ أَخْلَفُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ مَا وَعَدُوهُ وَبِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَكْذِبُونَ

Transliteration fa-aʿqabahum nifāqan fī qulūbihim ilā yawmi yalqawnahu bimā akhlafū l-laha mā waʿadūhu wabimā kānū yakdhibūna

English So He penalized them with hypocrisy in their hearts until the Day they will meet Him - because they failed Allāh in what they promised Him and because they [habitually] used to lie.

1. فَأَعْقَبَهُمْfa-aʿqabahumSo He penalized them
2. نِفَاقًۭاnifāqan(with) hypocrisy
3. فِىfīin
4. قُلُوبِهِمْqulūbihimtheir hearts
5. إِلَىٰilāuntil
6. يَوْمِyawmithe day
7. يَلْقَوْنَهُۥyalqawnahuwhen they will meet Him
8. بِمَآbimābecause
9. أَخْلَفُوا۟akhlafūthey broke
10. ٱللَّهَl-laha(the covenant with) Allah
11. مَاmāwhat
12. وَعَدُوهُwaʿadūhuthey had promised Him
13. وَبِمَاwabimāand because
14. كَانُوا۟kānūthey used to
15. يَكْذِبُونَyakdhibūnalie

أَلَمْ يَعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَعْلَمُ سِرَّهُمْ وَنَجْوَىٰهُمْ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلَّـٰمُ ٱلْغُيُوبِ

Transliteration alam yaʿlamū anna l-laha yaʿlamu sirrahum wanajwāhum wa-anna l-laha ʿallāmu l-ghuyūbi

English Did they not know that Allāh knows their secrets and their private conversations and that Allāh is the Knower of the unseen?

1. أَلَمْalamDo not
2. يَعْلَمُوٓا۟yaʿlamūthey know
3. أَنَّannathat
4. ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
5. يَعْلَمُyaʿlamuknows
6. سِرَّهُمْsirrahumtheir secret
7. وَنَجْوَىٰهُمْwanajwāhumand their secret conversation
8. وَأَنَّwa-annaand that
9. ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
10. عَلَّـٰمُʿallāmu(is) All-Knower
11. ٱلْغُيُوبِl-ghuyūbi(of) the unseen

ٱلَّذِينَ يَلْمِزُونَ ٱلْمُطَّوِّعِينَ مِنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِى ٱلصَّدَقَـٰتِ وَٱلَّذِينَ لَا يَجِدُونَ إِلَّا جُهْدَهُمْ فَيَسْخَرُونَ مِنْهُمْ ۙ سَخِرَ ٱللَّهُ مِنْهُمْ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ

Transliteration alladhīna yalmizūna l-muṭawiʿīna mina l-mu'minīna fī l-ṣadaqāti wa-alladhīna lā yajidūna illā juh'dahum fayaskharūna min'hum sakhira l-lahu min'hum walahum ʿadhābun alīmun

English Those who criticize the contributors among the believers concerning [their] charities and [criticize] the ones who find nothing [to spend] except their effort, so they ridicule them - Allāh will ridicule them, and they will have a painful punishment.

1. ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnaThose who
2. يَلْمِزُونَyalmizūnacriticize
3. ٱلْمُطَّوِّعِينَl-muṭawiʿīnathe ones who give willingly
4. مِنَminaof
5. ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَl-mu'minīnathe believers
6. فِىfīconcerning
7. ٱلصَّدَقَـٰتِl-ṣadaqātithe charities
8. وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaand those who
9. لَاlānot
10. يَجِدُونَyajidūnafind
11. إِلَّاillāexcept
12. جُهْدَهُمْjuh'dahumtheir effort
13. فَيَسْخَرُونَfayaskharūnaso they ridicule
14. مِنْهُمْ ۙmin'humthem
15. سَخِرَsakhiraAllah will ridicule
16. ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah will ridicule
17. مِنْهُمْmin'humthem
18. وَلَهُمْwalahumand for them
19. عَذَابٌʿadhābun(is) a punishment
20. أَلِيمٌalīmunpainful

ٱسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ أَوْ لَا تَسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ إِن تَسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ سَبْعِينَ مَرَّةً فَلَن يَغْفِرَ ٱللَّهُ لَهُمْ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ كَفَرُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ لَا يَهْدِى ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلْفَـٰسِقِينَ

Transliteration is'taghfir lahum aw lā tastaghfir lahum in tastaghfir lahum sabʿīna marratan falan yaghfira l-lahu lahum dhālika bi-annahum kafarū bil-lahi warasūlihi wal-lahu lā yahdī l-qawma l-fāsiqīna

English Ask forgiveness for them, [O Muḥammad], or do not ask forgiveness for them. If you should ask forgiveness for them seventy times - never will Allāh forgive them. That is because they disbelieved in Allāh and His Messenger, and Allāh does not guide the defiantly disobedient people.

1. ٱسْتَغْفِرْis'taghfirAsk forgiveness
2. لَهُمْlahumfor them
3. أَوْawor
4. لَاlā(do) not
5. تَسْتَغْفِرْtastaghfirask forgiveness
6. لَهُمْlahumfor them
7. إِنinIf
8. تَسْتَغْفِرْtastaghfiryou ask forgiveness
9. لَهُمْlahumfor them
10. سَبْعِينَsabʿīnaseventy
11. مَرَّةًۭmarratantimes
12. فَلَنfalannever
13. يَغْفِرَyaghfirawill Allah forgive
14. ٱللَّهُl-lahuwill Allah forgive
15. لَهُمْ ۚlahum[for] them
16. ذَٰلِكَdhālikaThat
17. بِأَنَّهُمْbi-annahum(is) because they
18. كَفَرُوا۟kafarūdisbelieved
19. بِٱللَّهِbil-lahiin Allah
20. وَرَسُولِهِۦ ۗwarasūlihiand His Messenger
21. وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuand Allah
22. لَاlā(does) not
23. يَهْدِىyahdīguide
24. ٱلْقَوْمَl-qawmathe people
25. ٱلْفَـٰسِقِينَl-fāsiqīnathe defiantly disobedient

فَرِحَ ٱلْمُخَلَّفُونَ بِمَقْعَدِهِمْ خِلَـٰفَ رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ وَكَرِهُوٓا۟ أَن يُجَـٰهِدُوا۟ بِأَمْوَٰلِهِمْ وَأَنفُسِهِمْ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ وَقَالُوا۟ لَا تَنفِرُوا۟ فِى ٱلْحَرِّ ۗ قُلْ نَارُ جَهَنَّمَ أَشَدُّ حَرًّا ۚ لَّوْ كَانُوا۟ يَفْقَهُونَ

Transliteration fariḥa l-mukhalafūna bimaqʿadihim khilāfa rasūli l-lahi wakarihū an yujāhidū bi-amwālihim wa-anfusihim fī sabīli l-lahi waqālū lā tanfirū fī l-ḥari qul nāru jahannama ashaddu ḥarran law kānū yafqahūna

English Those who remained behind rejoiced in their staying [at home] after [the departure of] the Messenger of Allāh and disliked to strive with their wealth and their lives in the cause of Allāh and said, "Do not go forth in the heat." Say, "The fire of Hell is more intense in heat" - if they would but understand.

1. فَرِحَfariḥaRejoice
2. ٱلْمُخَلَّفُونَl-mukhalafūnathose who remained behind
3. بِمَقْعَدِهِمْbimaqʿadihimin their staying
4. خِلَـٰفَkhilāfabehind
5. رَسُولِrasūli(the) Messenger
6. ٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allah
7. وَكَرِهُوٓا۟wakarihūand they disliked
8. أَنanto
9. يُجَـٰهِدُوا۟yujāhidūstrive
10. بِأَمْوَٰلِهِمْbi-amwālihimwith their wealth
11. وَأَنفُسِهِمْwa-anfusihimand their lives
12. فِىfīin
13. سَبِيلِsabīli(the) way
14. ٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allah
15. وَقَالُوا۟waqālūand they said
16. لَاlā(Do) not
17. تَنفِرُوا۟tanfirūgo forth
18. فِىfīin
19. ٱلْحَرِّ ۗl-ḥarithe heat
20. قُلْqulSay
21. نَارُnāru(The) Fire
22. جَهَنَّمَjahannama(of) Hell
23. أَشَدُّashaddu(is) more intense
24. حَرًّۭا ۚḥarran(in) heat
25. لَّوْlawIf (only)
26. كَانُوا۟kānūthey could
27. يَفْقَهُونَyafqahūnaunderstand

فَلْيَضْحَكُوا۟ قَلِيلًا وَلْيَبْكُوا۟ كَثِيرًا جَزَآءًۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَكْسِبُونَ

Transliteration falyaḍḥakū qalīlan walyabkū kathīran jazāan bimā kānū yaksibūna

English So let them laugh a little and [then] weep much as recompense for what they used to earn.

1. فَلْيَضْحَكُوا۟falyaḍḥakūSo let them laugh
2. قَلِيلًۭاqalīlana little
3. وَلْيَبْكُوا۟walyabkūand let them weep
4. كَثِيرًۭاkathīranmuch
5. جَزَآءًۢjazāan(as) a recompense
6. بِمَاbimāfor what
7. كَانُوا۟kānūthey used to
8. يَكْسِبُونَyaksibūnaearn

فَإِن رَّجَعَكَ ٱللَّهُ إِلَىٰ طَآئِفَةٍ مِّنْهُمْ فَٱسْتَـْٔذَنُوكَ لِلْخُرُوجِ فَقُل لَّن تَخْرُجُوا۟ مَعِىَ أَبَدًا وَلَن تُقَـٰتِلُوا۟ مَعِىَ عَدُوًّا ۖ إِنَّكُمْ رَضِيتُم بِٱلْقُعُودِ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ فَٱقْعُدُوا۟ مَعَ ٱلْخَـٰلِفِينَ

Transliteration fa-in rajaʿaka l-lahu ilā ṭāifatin min'hum fa-is'tadhanūka lil'khurūji faqul lan takhrujū maʿiya abadan walan tuqātilū maʿiya ʿaduwwan innakum raḍītum bil-quʿūdi awwala marratin fa-uq'ʿudū maʿa l-khālifīna

English If Allāh should return you to a faction of them [after the expedition] and then they ask your permission to go out [to battle], say, "You will not go out with me, ever, and you will never fight with me an enemy. Indeed, you were satisfied with sitting [at home] the first time, so sit [now] with those who stay behind."

1. فَإِنfa-inThen if
2. رَّجَعَكَrajaʿakaAllah returns you
3. ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah returns you
4. إِلَىٰilāto
5. طَآئِفَةٍۢṭāifatina group
6. مِّنْهُمْmin'humof them
7. فَٱسْتَـْٔذَنُوكَfa-is'tadhanūkaand they ask you permission
8. لِلْخُرُوجِlil'khurūjito go out
9. فَقُلfaqulthen say
10. لَّنlanNever
11. تَخْرُجُوا۟takhrujūwill you come out
12. مَعِىَmaʿiyawith me
13. أَبَدًۭاabadanever
14. وَلَنwalanand never
15. تُقَـٰتِلُوا۟tuqātilūwill you fight
16. مَعِىَmaʿiyawith me
17. عَدُوًّا ۖʿaduwwanany enemy
18. إِنَّكُمْinnakumIndeed, you
19. رَضِيتُمraḍītumwere satisfied
20. بِٱلْقُعُودِbil-quʿūdiwith sitting
21. أَوَّلَawwala(the) first
22. مَرَّةٍۢmarratintime
23. فَٱقْعُدُوا۟fa-uq'ʿudūso sit
24. مَعَmaʿawith
25. ٱلْخَـٰلِفِينَl-khālifīnathose who stay behind

وَلَا تُصَلِّ عَلَىٰٓ أَحَدٍ مِّنْهُم مَّاتَ أَبَدًا وَلَا تَقُمْ عَلَىٰ قَبْرِهِۦٓ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ كَفَرُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ وَمَاتُوا۟ وَهُمْ فَـٰسِقُونَ

Transliteration walā tuṣalli ʿalā aḥadin min'hum māta abadan walā taqum ʿalā qabrihi innahum kafarū bil-lahi warasūlihi wamātū wahum fāsiqūna

English And do not pray [the funeral prayer, O Muḥammad], over any of them who has died - ever - or stand at his grave. Indeed, they disbelieved in Allāh and His Messenger and died while they were defiantly disobedient.

1. وَلَاwalāAnd not
2. تُصَلِّtuṣalliyou pray
3. عَلَىٰٓʿalāfor
4. أَحَدٍۢaḥadinany
5. مِّنْهُمmin'humof them
6. مَّاتَmātawho dies
7. أَبَدًۭاabadanever
8. وَلَاwalāand not
9. تَقُمْtaqumyou stand
10. عَلَىٰʿalāby
11. قَبْرِهِۦٓ ۖqabrihihis grave
12. إِنَّهُمْinnahumIndeed, they
13. كَفَرُوا۟kafarūdisbelieved
14. بِٱللَّهِbil-lahiin Allah
15. وَرَسُولِهِۦwarasūlihiand His Messenger
16. وَمَاتُوا۟wamātūand died
17. وَهُمْwahumwhile they were
18. فَـٰسِقُونَfāsiqūnadefiantly disobedient

وَلَا تُعْجِبْكَ أَمْوَٰلُهُمْ وَأَوْلَـٰدُهُمْ ۚ إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ ٱللَّهُ أَن يُعَذِّبَهُم بِهَا فِى ٱلدُّنْيَا وَتَزْهَقَ أَنفُسُهُمْ وَهُمْ كَـٰفِرُونَ

Transliteration walā tuʿ'jib'ka amwāluhum wa-awlāduhum innamā yurīdu l-lahu an yuʿadhibahum bihā fī l-dun'yā watazhaqa anfusuhum wahum kāfirūna

English And let not their wealth and their children impress you. Allāh only intends to punish them through them in this world and that their souls should depart [at death] while they are disbelievers.

1. وَلَاwalāAnd (let) not
2. تُعْجِبْكَtuʿ'jib'kaimpress you
3. أَمْوَٰلُهُمْamwāluhumtheir wealth
4. وَأَوْلَـٰدُهُمْ ۚwa-awlāduhumand their children
5. إِنَّمَاinnamāOnly
6. يُرِيدُyurīduAllah intends
7. ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah intends
8. أَنanto
9. يُعَذِّبَهُمyuʿadhibahumpunish them
10. بِهَاbihāwith it
11. فِىfīin
12. ٱلدُّنْيَاl-dun'yāthe world
13. وَتَزْهَقَwatazhaqaand will depart
14. أَنفُسُهُمْanfusuhumtheir souls
15. وَهُمْwahumwhile they
16. كَـٰفِرُونَkāfirūna(are) disbelievers

وَإِذَآ أُنزِلَتْ سُورَةٌ أَنْ ءَامِنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَجَـٰهِدُوا۟ مَعَ رَسُولِهِ ٱسْتَـْٔذَنَكَ أُو۟لُوا۟ ٱلطَّوْلِ مِنْهُمْ وَقَالُوا۟ ذَرْنَا نَكُن مَّعَ ٱلْقَـٰعِدِينَ

Transliteration wa-idhā unzilat sūratun an āminū bil-lahi wajāhidū maʿa rasūlihi is'tadhanaka ulū l-ṭawli min'hum waqālū dharnā nakun maʿa l-qāʿidīna

English And when a sūrah was revealed [enjoining them] to believe in Allāh and to fight with His Messenger, those of wealth among them asked your permission [to stay back] and said, "Leave us to be with them who sit [at home]."

1. وَإِذَآwa-idhāAnd when
2. أُنزِلَتْunzilatwas revealed
3. سُورَةٌsūratuna Surah
4. أَنْanthat
5. ءَامِنُوا۟āminūbelieve
6. بِٱللَّهِbil-lahiin Allah
7. وَجَـٰهِدُوا۟wajāhidūand strive
8. مَعَmaʿawith
9. رَسُولِهِrasūlihiHis Messenger
10. ٱسْتَـْٔذَنَكَis'tadhanakaask your permission
11. أُو۟لُوا۟ulū(the) men
12. ٱلطَّوْلِl-ṭawli(of) wealth
13. مِنْهُمْmin'humamong them
14. وَقَالُوا۟waqālūand said
15. ذَرْنَاdharnāLeave us
16. نَكُنnakun(to) be
17. مَّعَmaʿawith
18. ٱلْقَـٰعِدِينَl-qāʿidīnathose who sit

رَضُوا۟ بِأَن يَكُونُوا۟ مَعَ ٱلْخَوَالِفِ وَطُبِعَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ فَهُمْ لَا يَفْقَهُونَ

Transliteration raḍū bi-an yakūnū maʿa l-khawālifi waṭubiʿa ʿalā qulūbihim fahum lā yafqahūna

English They were satisfied to be with those who stay behind, and their hearts were sealed over, so they do not understand.

1. رَضُوا۟raḍūThey (were) satisfied
2. بِأَنbi-anto
3. يَكُونُوا۟yakūnūbe
4. مَعَmaʿawith
5. ٱلْخَوَالِفِl-khawālifithose who stay behind
6. وَطُبِعَwaṭubiʿaand were sealed
7. عَلَىٰʿalā[on]
8. قُلُوبِهِمْqulūbihimtheir hearts
9. فَهُمْfahumso they
10. لَاlā(do) not
11. يَفْقَهُونَyafqahūnaunderstand

لَـٰكِنِ ٱلرَّسُولُ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مَعَهُۥ جَـٰهَدُوا۟ بِأَمْوَٰلِهِمْ وَأَنفُسِهِمْ ۚ وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ لَهُمُ ٱلْخَيْرَٰتُ ۖ وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْمُفْلِحُونَ

Transliteration lākini l-rasūlu wa-alladhīna āmanū maʿahu jāhadū bi-amwālihim wa-anfusihim wa-ulāika lahumu l-khayrātu wa-ulāika humu l-muf'liḥūna

English But the Messenger and those who believed with him fought with their wealth and their lives. Those will have [all that is] good and it is those who are the successful.

1. لَـٰكِنِlākiniBut
2. ٱلرَّسُولُl-rasūluthe Messenger
3. وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaand those who
4. ءَامَنُوا۟āmanūbelieved
5. مَعَهُۥmaʿahuwith him
6. جَـٰهَدُوا۟jāhadūstrove
7. بِأَمْوَٰلِهِمْbi-amwālihimwith their wealth
8. وَأَنفُسِهِمْ ۚwa-anfusihimand their lives
9. وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَwa-ulāikaAnd those
10. لَهُمُlahumufor them
11. ٱلْخَيْرَٰتُ ۖl-khayrātu(are) the good things
12. وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَwa-ulāikaand those
13. هُمُhumuthey
14. ٱلْمُفْلِحُونَl-muf'liḥūna(are) the successful ones

أَعَدَّ ٱللَّهُ لَهُمْ جَنَّـٰتٍ تَجْرِى مِن تَحْتِهَا ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ خَـٰلِدِينَ فِيهَا ۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْفَوْزُ ٱلْعَظِيمُ

Transliteration aʿadda l-lahu lahum jannātin tajrī min taḥtihā l-anhāru khālidīna fīhā dhālika l-fawzu l-ʿaẓīmu

English Allāh has prepared for them gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide eternally. That is the great attainment.

1. أَعَدَّaʿaddaAllah has prepared
2. ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah has prepared
3. لَهُمْlahumfor them
4. جَنَّـٰتٍۢjannātinGardens
5. تَجْرِىtajrīflows
6. مِنminfrom
7. تَحْتِهَاtaḥtihāunderneath it
8. ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُl-anhāruthe rivers
9. خَـٰلِدِينَkhālidīna(will) abide forever
10. فِيهَا ۚfīhāin it
11. ذَٰلِكَdhālikaThat
12. ٱلْفَوْزُl-fawzu(is) the success
13. ٱلْعَظِيمُl-ʿaẓīmuthe great

وَجَآءَ ٱلْمُعَذِّرُونَ مِنَ ٱلْأَعْرَابِ لِيُؤْذَنَ لَهُمْ وَقَعَدَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَذَبُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ ۚ سَيُصِيبُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِنْهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ

Transliteration wajāa l-muʿadhirūna mina l-aʿrābi liyu'dhana lahum waqaʿada alladhīna kadhabū l-laha warasūlahu sayuṣību alladhīna kafarū min'hum ʿadhābun alīmun

English And those with excuses among the bedouins came to be permitted [to remain], and they who had lied to Allāh and His Messenger sat [at home]. There will strike those who disbelieved among them a painful punishment.

1. وَجَآءَwajāaAnd came
2. ٱلْمُعَذِّرُونَl-muʿadhirūnathe ones who make excuses
3. مِنَminaof
4. ٱلْأَعْرَابِl-aʿrābithe bedouins
5. لِيُؤْذَنَliyu'dhanathat permission be granted
6. لَهُمْlahumto them
7. وَقَعَدَwaqaʿadaand sat
8. ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
9. كَذَبُوا۟kadhabūlied
10. ٱللَّهَl-laha(to) Allah
11. وَرَسُولَهُۥ ۚwarasūlahuand His Messenger
12. سَيُصِيبُsayuṣībuWill strike
13. ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
14. كَفَرُوا۟kafarūdisbelieved
15. مِنْهُمْmin'humamong them
16. عَذَابٌʿadhābuna punishment
17. أَلِيمٌۭalīmunpainful

لَّيْسَ عَلَى ٱلضُّعَفَآءِ وَلَا عَلَى ٱلْمَرْضَىٰ وَلَا عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يَجِدُونَ مَا يُنفِقُونَ حَرَجٌ إِذَا نَصَحُوا۟ لِلَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ ۚ مَا عَلَى ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ مِن سَبِيلٍ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ

Transliteration laysa ʿalā l-ḍuʿafāi walā ʿalā l-marḍā walā ʿalā alladhīna lā yajidūna mā yunfiqūna ḥarajun idhā naṣaḥū lillahi warasūlihi mā ʿalā l-muḥ'sinīna min sabīlin wal-lahu ghafūrun raḥīmun

English There is not upon the weak or upon the ill or upon those who do not find anything to spend any discomfort [i.e., guilt] when they are sincere to Allāh and His Messenger. There is not upon the doers of good any cause [for blame]. And Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.

1. لَّيْسَlaysaNot
2. عَلَىʿalāon
3. ٱلضُّعَفَآءِl-ḍuʿafāithe weak
4. وَلَاwalāand not
5. عَلَىʿalāon
6. ٱلْمَرْضَىٰl-marḍāthe sick
7. وَلَاwalāand not
8. عَلَىʿalāon
9. ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
10. لَاlānot
11. يَجِدُونَyajidūnathey find
12. مَاmāwhat
13. يُنفِقُونَyunfiqūnathey (can) spend
14. حَرَجٌḥarajunany blame
15. إِذَاidhāif
16. نَصَحُوا۟naṣaḥūthey (are) sincere
17. لِلَّهِlillahito Allah
18. وَرَسُولِهِۦ ۚwarasūlihiand His Messenger
19. مَاmāNot
20. عَلَىʿalā(is) on
21. ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَl-muḥ'sinīnathe good-doers
22. مِنminany
23. سَبِيلٍۢ ۚsabīlinway (for blame)
24. وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allah
25. غَفُورٌۭghafūrun(is) Oft-Forgiving
26. رَّحِيمٌۭraḥīmunMost Merciful

وَلَا عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ إِذَا مَآ أَتَوْكَ لِتَحْمِلَهُمْ قُلْتَ لَآ أَجِدُ مَآ أَحْمِلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ تَوَلَّوا۟ وَّأَعْيُنُهُمْ تَفِيضُ مِنَ ٱلدَّمْعِ حَزَنًا أَلَّا يَجِدُوا۟ مَا يُنفِقُونَ

Transliteration walā ʿalā alladhīna idhā mā atawka litaḥmilahum qul'ta lā ajidu mā aḥmilukum ʿalayhi tawallaw wa-aʿyunuhum tafīḍu mina l-damʿi ḥazanan allā yajidū mā yunfiqūna

English Nor [is there blame] upon those who, when they came to you for you to take them along, you said, "I can find nothing upon which to carry you." They turned back while their eyes overflowed with tears out of grief that they could not find something to spend [for the cause of Allāh].

7. لِتَحْمِلَهُمْlitaḥmilahumthat you provide them with mounts
8. قُلْتَqul'tayou said
9. لَآlāNot
10. أَجِدُajiduI find
11. مَآmāwhat
12. أَحْمِلُكُمْaḥmilukumto mount you
13. عَلَيْهِʿalayhion [it]
14. تَوَلَّوا۟tawallawThey turned back
15. وَّأَعْيُنُهُمْwa-aʿyunuhumwith their eyes
16. تَفِيضُtafīḍuflowing
17. مِنَmina[of]
18. ٱلدَّمْعِl-damʿi(with) the tears
19. حَزَنًاḥazanan(of) sorrow
20. أَلَّاallāthat not
21. يَجِدُوا۟yajidūthey find
22. مَاmāwhat
23. يُنفِقُونَyunfiqūnathey (could) spend

۞ إِنَّمَا ٱلسَّبِيلُ عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ يَسْتَـْٔذِنُونَكَ وَهُمْ أَغْنِيَآءُ ۚ رَضُوا۟ بِأَن يَكُونُوا۟ مَعَ ٱلْخَوَالِفِ وَطَبَعَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ فَهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ

Transliteration innamā l-sabīlu ʿalā alladhīna yastadhinūnaka wahum aghniyāu raḍū bi-an yakūnū maʿa l-khawālifi waṭabaʿa l-lahu ʿalā qulūbihim fahum lā yaʿlamūna

English The cause [for blame] is only upon those who ask permission of you while they are rich. They are satisfied to be with those who stay behind, and Allāh has sealed over their hearts, so they do not know.

2. ٱلسَّبِيلُl-sabīluthe way (blame)
3. عَلَىʿalā(is) on
4. ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
5. يَسْتَـْٔذِنُونَكَyastadhinūnakaask your permission
6. وَهُمْwahumwhile they
7. أَغْنِيَآءُ ۚaghniyāu(are) rich
8. رَضُوا۟raḍūThey (are) satisfied
9. بِأَنbi-anto
10. يَكُونُوا۟yakūnūbe
11. مَعَmaʿawith
12. ٱلْخَوَالِفِl-khawālifithose who stay behind
13. وَطَبَعَwaṭabaʿaand Allah sealed
14. ٱللَّهُl-lahuand Allah sealed
15. عَلَىٰʿalā[on]
16. قُلُوبِهِمْqulūbihimtheir hearts
17. فَهُمْfahumso they
18. لَاlā(do) not
19. يَعْلَمُونَyaʿlamūnaknow
