Surah Al-Baqarah in English: word by word, transliteration

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

Transliteration bis'mi l-lahi l-raḥmāni l-raḥīmi

English In the name of Allāh, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.

1. بِسْمِbis'miIn (the) name
2. ٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allah
3. ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِl-raḥmānithe Most Gracious
4. ٱلرَّحِيمِl-raḥīmithe Most Merciful

الٓمٓ

Transliteration alif-lam-meem

English Alif, Lām, Meem.

1. الٓمٓalif-lam-meemAlif Laam Meem

ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْكِتَـٰبُ لَا رَيْبَ ۛ فِيهِ ۛ هُدًى لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ

Transliteration dhālika l-kitābu lā rayba fīhi hudan lil'muttaqīna

English This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allāh -

1. ذَٰلِكَdhālikaThat
2. ٱلْكِتَـٰبُl-kitābu(is) the book
3. لَاlāno
4. رَيْبَ ۛraybadoubt
5. فِيهِ ۛfīhiin it
6. هُدًۭىhudana Guidance
7. لِّلْمُتَّقِينَlil'muttaqīnafor the God-conscious

ٱلَّذِينَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱلْغَيْبِ وَيُقِيمُونَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَمِمَّا رَزَقْنَـٰهُمْ يُنفِقُونَ

Transliteration alladhīna yu'minūna bil-ghaybi wayuqīmūna l-ṣalata wamimmā razaqnāhum yunfiqūna

English Who believe in the unseen, establish prayer, and spend out of what We have provided for them,

1. ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnaThose who
2. يُؤْمِنُونَyu'minūnabelieve
3. بِٱلْغَيْبِbil-ghaybiin the unseen
4. وَيُقِيمُونَwayuqīmūnaand establish
5. ٱلصَّلَوٰةَl-ṣalatathe prayer
6. وَمِمَّاwamimmāand out of what
7. رَزَقْنَـٰهُمْrazaqnāhumWe have provided them
8. يُنفِقُونَyunfiqūnathey spend

وَٱلَّذِينَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِمَآ أُنزِلَ إِلَيْكَ وَمَآ أُنزِلَ مِن قَبْلِكَ وَبِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ هُمْ يُوقِنُونَ

Transliteration wa-alladhīna yu'minūna bimā unzila ilayka wamā unzila min qablika wabil-ākhirati hum yūqinūna

English And who believe in what has been revealed to you, [O Muḥammad], and what was revealed before you, and of the Hereafter they are certain [in faith].

1. وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those who
2. يُؤْمِنُونَyu'minūnabelieve
3. بِمَآbimāin what
4. أُنزِلَunzila(is) sent down
5. إِلَيْكَilaykato you
6. وَمَآwamāand what
7. أُنزِلَunzilawas sent down
8. مِنminfrom
9. قَبْلِكَqablikabefore you
10. وَبِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِwabil-ākhiratiand in the Hereafter
11. هُمْhumthey
12. يُوقِنُونَyūqinūnafirmly believe

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ عَلَىٰ هُدًى مِّن رَّبِّهِمْ ۖ وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْمُفْلِحُونَ

Transliteration ulāika ʿalā hudan min rabbihim wa-ulāika humu l-muf'liḥūna

English Those are upon [right] guidance from their Lord, and it is those who are the successful.

1. أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَulāikaThose
2. عَلَىٰʿalā(are) on
3. هُدًۭىhudanGuidance
4. مِّنminfrom
5. رَّبِّهِمْ ۖrabbihimtheir Lord
6. وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَwa-ulāikaand those
7. هُمُhumuthey
8. ٱلْمُفْلِحُونَl-muf'liḥūna(are) the successful ones

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ سَوَآءٌ عَلَيْهِمْ ءَأَنذَرْتَهُمْ أَمْ لَمْ تُنذِرْهُمْ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ

Transliteration inna alladhīna kafarū sawāon ʿalayhim a-andhartahum am lam tundhir'hum lā yu'minūna

English Indeed, those who disbelieve - it is all the same for them whether you warn them or do not warn them - they will not believe.

1. إِنَّinnaIndeed
2. ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
3. كَفَرُوا۟kafarūdisbelieve[d]
4. سَوَآءٌsawāon(it) is same
5. عَلَيْهِمْʿalayhimto them
6. ءَأَنذَرْتَهُمْa-andhartahumwhether you warn them
7. أَمْamor
8. لَمْlamnot
9. تُنذِرْهُمْtundhir'humyou warn them
10. لَاlānot
11. يُؤْمِنُونَyu'minūnathey believe

خَتَمَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ وَعَلَىٰ سَمْعِهِمْ ۖ وَعَلَىٰٓ أَبْصَـٰرِهِمْ غِشَـٰوَةٌ ۖ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ عَظِيمٌ

Transliteration khatama l-lahu ʿalā qulūbihim waʿalā samʿihim waʿalā abṣārihim ghishāwatun walahum ʿadhābun ʿaẓīmun

English Allāh has set a seal upon their hearts and upon their hearing, and over their vision is a veil. And for them is a great punishment.

1. خَتَمَkhatamaHas set a seal
2. ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
3. عَلَىٰʿalāon
4. قُلُوبِهِمْqulūbihimtheir hearts
5. وَعَلَىٰwaʿalāand on
6. سَمْعِهِمْ ۖsamʿihimtheir hearing
7. وَعَلَىٰٓwaʿalāand on
8. أَبْصَـٰرِهِمْabṣārihimtheir vision
9. غِشَـٰوَةٌۭ ۖghishāwatun(is) a veil
10. وَلَهُمْwalahumAnd for them
11. عَذَابٌʿadhābun(is) a punishment
12. عَظِيمٌۭʿaẓīmungreat

وَمِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ مَن يَقُولُ ءَامَنَّا بِٱللَّهِ وَبِٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ وَمَا هُم بِمُؤْمِنِينَ

Transliteration wamina l-nāsi man yaqūlu āmannā bil-lahi wabil-yawmi l-ākhiri wamā hum bimu'minīna

English And of the people are some who say, "We believe in Allāh and the Last Day," but they are not believers.

1. وَمِنَwaminaAnd of
2. ٱلنَّاسِl-nāsithe people
3. مَنman(are some) who
4. يَقُولُyaqūlusay
5. ءَامَنَّاāmannāWe believed
6. بِٱللَّهِbil-lahiin Allah
7. وَبِٱلْيَوْمِwabil-yawmiand in the Day
8. ٱلْـَٔاخِرِl-ākhiri[the] Last
9. وَمَاwamābut not
10. هُمhumthey
11. بِمُؤْمِنِينَbimu'minīna(are) believers (at all)

يُخَـٰدِعُونَ ٱللَّهَ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَمَا يَخْدَعُونَ إِلَّآ أَنفُسَهُمْ وَمَا يَشْعُرُونَ

Transliteration yukhādiʿūna l-laha wa-alladhīna āmanū wamā yakhdaʿūna illā anfusahum wamā yashʿurūna

English They [think to] deceive Allāh and those who believe, but they deceive not except themselves and perceive [it] not.

1. يُخَـٰدِعُونَyukhādiʿūnaThey seek to deceive
2. ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
3. وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaand those who
4. ءَامَنُوا۟āmanūbelieve[d]
5. وَمَاwamāand not
6. يَخْدَعُونَyakhdaʿūnathey deceive
7. إِلَّآillāexcept
8. أَنفُسَهُمْanfusahumthemselves
9. وَمَاwamāand not
10. يَشْعُرُونَyashʿurūnathey realize (it)

فِى قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ فَزَادَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ مَرَضًا ۖ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَكْذِبُونَ

Transliteration fī qulūbihim maraḍun fazādahumu l-lahu maraḍan walahum ʿadhābun alīmun bimā kānū yakdhibūna

English In their hearts is disease, so Allāh has increased their disease; and for them is a painful punishment because they [habitually] used to lie.

1. فِىfīIn
2. قُلُوبِهِمqulūbihimtheir hearts
3. مَّرَضٌۭmaraḍun(is) a disease
4. فَزَادَهُمُfazādahumuso has increased them
5. ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
6. مَرَضًۭا ۖmaraḍan(in) disease
7. وَلَهُمْwalahumand for them
8. عَذَابٌʿadhābun(is) a punishment
9. أَلِيمٌۢalīmunpainful
10. بِمَاbimābecause
11. كَانُوا۟kānūthey used to
12. يَكْذِبُونَyakdhibūna[they] lie

وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ لَا تُفْسِدُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّمَا نَحْنُ مُصْلِحُونَ

Transliteration wa-idhā qīla lahum lā tuf'sidū fī l-arḍi qālū innamā naḥnu muṣ'liḥūna

English And when it is said to them, "Do not cause corruption on the earth," they say, "We are but reformers."

1. وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd when
2. قِيلَqīlait is said
3. لَهُمْlahumto them
4. لَاlā(Do) not
5. تُفْسِدُوا۟tuf'sidūspread corruption
6. فِىfīin
7. ٱلْأَرْضِl-arḍithe earth
8. قَالُوٓا۟qālūthey say
9. إِنَّمَاinnamāOnly
10. نَحْنُnaḥnuwe
11. مُصْلِحُونَmuṣ'liḥūna(are) reformers

أَلَآ إِنَّهُمْ هُمُ ٱلْمُفْسِدُونَ وَلَـٰكِن لَّا يَشْعُرُونَ

Transliteration alā innahum humu l-muf'sidūna walākin lā yashʿurūna

English Unquestionably, it is they who are the corrupters, but they perceive [it] not.

1. أَلَآalāBeware
2. إِنَّهُمْinnahumindeed they
3. هُمُhumuthemselves
4. ٱلْمُفْسِدُونَl-muf'sidūna(are) the ones who spread corruption
5. وَلَـٰكِنwalākin[and] but
6. لَّاlānot
7. يَشْعُرُونَyashʿurūnathey realize (it)

وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ ءَامِنُوا۟ كَمَآ ءَامَنَ ٱلنَّاسُ قَالُوٓا۟ أَنُؤْمِنُ كَمَآ ءَامَنَ ٱلسُّفَهَآءُ ۗ أَلَآ إِنَّهُمْ هُمُ ٱلسُّفَهَآءُ وَلَـٰكِن لَّا يَعْلَمُونَ

Transliteration wa-idhā qīla lahum āminū kamā āmana l-nāsu qālū anu'minu kamā āmana l-sufahāu alā innahum humu l-sufahāu walākin lā yaʿlamūna

English And when it is said to them, "Believe as the people have believed," they say, "Should we believe as the foolish have believed?" Unquestionably, it is they who are the foolish, but they know [it] not.

1. وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd when
2. قِيلَqīlait is said
3. لَهُمْlahumto them
4. ءَامِنُوا۟āminūBelieve
5. كَمَآkamāas
6. ءَامَنَāmanabelieved
7. ٱلنَّاسُl-nāsuthe people
8. قَالُوٓا۟qālūthey say
9. أَنُؤْمِنُanu'minuShould we believe
10. كَمَآkamāas
11. ءَامَنَāmanabelieved
12. ٱلسُّفَهَآءُ ۗl-sufahāuthe fools
13. أَلَآalāBeware
14. إِنَّهُمْinnahumcertainly they
15. هُمُhumuthemselves
16. ٱلسُّفَهَآءُl-sufahāu(are) the fools
17. وَلَـٰكِنwalākin[and] but
18. لَّاlānot
19. يَعْلَمُونَyaʿlamūnathey know

وَإِذَا لَقُوا۟ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ قَالُوٓا۟ ءَامَنَّا وَإِذَا خَلَوْا۟ إِلَىٰ شَيَـٰطِينِهِمْ قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّا مَعَكُمْ إِنَّمَا نَحْنُ مُسْتَهْزِءُونَ

Transliteration wa-idhā laqū alladhīna āmanū qālū āmannā wa-idhā khalaw ilā shayāṭīnihim qālū innā maʿakum innamā naḥnu mus'tahziūna

English And when they meet those who believe, they say, "We believe"; but when they are alone with their evil ones, they say, "Indeed, we are with you; we were only mockers."

1. وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd when
2. لَقُوا۟laqūthey meet
3. ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
4. ءَامَنُوا۟āmanūbelieve[d]
5. قَالُوٓا۟qālūthey say
6. ءَامَنَّاāmannāWe believe[d]
7. وَإِذَاwa-idhāBut when
8. خَلَوْا۟khalawthey are alone
9. إِلَىٰilāwith
10. شَيَـٰطِينِهِمْshayāṭīnihimtheir evil ones
11. قَالُوٓا۟qālūthey say
12. إِنَّاinnāIndeed, we
13. مَعَكُمْmaʿakum(are) with you
14. إِنَّمَاinnamāonly
15. نَحْنُnaḥnuwe
16. مُسْتَهْزِءُونَmus'tahziūna(are) mockers

ٱللَّهُ يَسْتَهْزِئُ بِهِمْ وَيَمُدُّهُمْ فِى طُغْيَـٰنِهِمْ يَعْمَهُونَ

Transliteration al-lahu yastahzi-u bihim wayamudduhum fī ṭugh'yānihim yaʿmahūna

English [But] Allāh mocks them and prolongs them in their transgression [while] they wander blindly.

1. ٱللَّهُal-lahuAllah
2. يَسْتَهْزِئُyastahzi-umocks
3. بِهِمْbihimat them
4. وَيَمُدُّهُمْwayamudduhumand prolongs them
5. فِىfīin
6. طُغْيَـٰنِهِمْṭugh'yānihimtheir transgression
7. يَعْمَهُونَyaʿmahūnathey wander blindly

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱشْتَرَوُا۟ ٱلضَّلَـٰلَةَ بِٱلْهُدَىٰ فَمَا رَبِحَت تِّجَـٰرَتُهُمْ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ مُهْتَدِينَ

Transliteration ulāika alladhīna ish'tarawū l-ḍalālata bil-hudā famā rabiḥat tijāratuhum wamā kānū muh'tadīna

English Those are the ones who have purchased error [in exchange] for guidance, so their transaction has brought no profit, nor were they guided.

1. أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَulāikaThose
2. ٱلَّذِينَalladhīna(are) the ones who
3. ٱشْتَرَوُا۟ish'tarawūbought
4. ٱلضَّلَـٰلَةَl-ḍalālata[the] astraying
5. بِٱلْهُدَىٰbil-hudāfor [the] guidance
6. فَمَاfamāSo not
7. رَبِحَتrabiḥatprofited
8. تِّجَـٰرَتُهُمْtijāratuhumtheir commerce
9. وَمَاwamāand not
10. كَانُوا۟kānūwere they
11. مُهْتَدِينَmuh'tadīnaguided-ones

مَثَلُهُمْ كَمَثَلِ ٱلَّذِى ٱسْتَوْقَدَ نَارًا فَلَمَّآ أَضَآءَتْ مَا حَوْلَهُۥ ذَهَبَ ٱللَّهُ بِنُورِهِمْ وَتَرَكَهُمْ فِى ظُلُمَـٰتٍ لَّا يُبْصِرُونَ

Transliteration mathaluhum kamathali alladhī is'tawqada nāran falammā aḍāat mā ḥawlahu dhahaba l-lahu binūrihim watarakahum fī ẓulumātin lā yub'ṣirūna

English Their example is that of one who kindled a fire, but when it illuminated what was around him, Allāh took away their light and left them in darkness [so] they could not see.

1. مَثَلُهُمْmathaluhumTheir example
2. كَمَثَلِkamathali(is) like (the) example
3. ٱلَّذِىalladhī(of) the one who
4. ٱسْتَوْقَدَis'tawqadakindled
5. نَارًۭاnārana fire
6. فَلَمَّآfalammāthen, when
7. أَضَآءَتْaḍāatit illuminated
8. مَاmāwhat
9. حَوْلَهُۥḥawlahu(was) around him
10. ذَهَبَdhahabatook away
11. ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
12. بِنُورِهِمْbinūrihimtheir light
13. وَتَرَكَهُمْwatarakahumand left them
14. فِىfīin
15. ظُلُمَـٰتٍۢẓulumātindarkness[es]
16. لَّاlā(so) not
17. يُبْصِرُونَyub'ṣirūna(do) they see

صُمٌّۢ بُكْمٌ عُمْىٌ فَهُمْ لَا يَرْجِعُونَ

Transliteration ṣummun buk'mun ʿum'yun fahum lā yarjiʿūna

English Deaf, dumb and blind - so they will not return [to the right path].

1. صُمٌّۢṣummunDeaf
2. بُكْمٌbuk'mundumb
3. عُمْىٌۭʿum'yunblind
4. فَهُمْfahumso they
5. لَاlānot
6. يَرْجِعُونَyarjiʿūna[they] will not return

أَوْ كَصَيِّبٍ مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ فِيهِ ظُلُمَـٰتٌ وَرَعْدٌ وَبَرْقٌ يَجْعَلُونَ أَصَـٰبِعَهُمْ فِىٓ ءَاذَانِهِم مِّنَ ٱلصَّوَٰعِقِ حَذَرَ ٱلْمَوْتِ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ مُحِيطٌۢ بِٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

Transliteration aw kaṣayyibin mina l-samāi fīhi ẓulumātun waraʿdun wabarqun yajʿalūna aṣābiʿahum fī ādhānihim mina l-ṣawāʿiqi ḥadhara l-mawti wal-lahu muḥīṭun bil-kāfirīna

English Or [it is] like a rainstorm from the sky within which is darkness, thunder and lightning. They put their fingers in their ears against the thunderclaps in dread of death. But Allāh is encompassing of the disbelievers.

1. أَوْawOr
2. كَصَيِّبٍۢkaṣayyibinlike a rainstorm
3. مِّنَminafrom
4. ٱلسَّمَآءِl-samāithe sky
5. فِيهِfīhiin it (are)
6. ظُلُمَـٰتٌۭẓulumātundarkness[es]
7. وَرَعْدٌۭwaraʿdunand thunder
8. وَبَرْقٌۭwabarqunand lightning
9. يَجْعَلُونَyajʿalūnaThey put
10. أَصَـٰبِعَهُمْaṣābiʿahumtheir fingers
11. فِىٓfīin
12. ءَاذَانِهِمādhānihimtheir ears
13. مِّنَminafrom
14. ٱلصَّوَٰعِقِl-ṣawāʿiqithe thunderclaps
15. حَذَرَḥadhara(in) fear (of)
16. ٱلْمَوْتِ ۚl-mawti[the] death
17. وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allah
18. مُحِيطٌۢmuḥīṭun(is) [the One Who] encompasses
19. بِٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَbil-kāfirīnathe disbelievers

يَكَادُ ٱلْبَرْقُ يَخْطَفُ أَبْصَـٰرَهُمْ ۖ كُلَّمَآ أَضَآءَ لَهُم مَّشَوْا۟ فِيهِ وَإِذَآ أَظْلَمَ عَلَيْهِمْ قَامُوا۟ ۚ وَلَوْ شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ لَذَهَبَ بِسَمْعِهِمْ وَأَبْصَـٰرِهِمْ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

Transliteration yakādu l-barqu yakhṭafu abṣārahum kullamā aḍāa lahum mashaw fīhi wa-idhā aẓlama ʿalayhim qāmū walaw shāa l-lahu ladhahaba bisamʿihim wa-abṣārihim inna l-laha ʿalā kulli shayin qadīrun

English The lightning almost snatches away their sight. Every time it lights [the way] for them, they walk therein; but when darkness comes over them, they stand [still]. And if Allāh had willed, He could have taken away their hearing and their sight. Indeed, Allāh is over all things competent.

1. يَكَادُyakāduAlmost
2. ٱلْبَرْقُl-barquthe lightning
3. يَخْطَفُyakhṭafusnatches away
4. أَبْصَـٰرَهُمْ ۖabṣārahumtheir sight
5. كُلَّمَآkullamāWhenever
6. أَضَآءَaḍāait flashes
7. لَهُمlahumfor them
8. مَّشَوْا۟mashawthey walk
9. فِيهِfīhiin it
10. وَإِذَآwa-idhāand when
11. أَظْلَمَaẓlamait darkens
12. عَلَيْهِمْʿalayhimon them
13. قَامُوا۟ ۚqāmūthey stand (still)
14. وَلَوْwalawAnd if
15. شَآءَshāahad willed
16. ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
17. لَذَهَبَladhahabaHe would certainly have taken away
18. بِسَمْعِهِمْbisamʿihimtheir hearing
19. وَأَبْصَـٰرِهِمْ ۚwa-abṣārihimand their sight
20. إِنَّinnaIndeed
21. ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
22. عَلَىٰʿalā(is) on
23. كُلِّkullievery
24. شَىْءٍۢshayinthing
25. قَدِيرٌۭqadīrunAll-Powerful

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ ٱعْبُدُوا۟ رَبَّكُمُ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَكُمْ وَٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ

Transliteration yāayyuhā l-nāsu uʿ'budū rabbakumu alladhī khalaqakum wa-alladhīna min qablikum laʿallakum tattaqūna

English O mankind, worship your Lord, who created you and those before you, that you may become righteous -

1. يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāO
2. ٱلنَّاسُl-nāsumankind
3. ٱعْبُدُوا۟uʿ'budūworship
4. رَبَّكُمُrabbakumuyour Lord
5. ٱلَّذِىalladhīthe One Who
6. خَلَقَكُمْkhalaqakumcreated you
7. وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaand those
8. مِنminfrom
9. قَبْلِكُمْqablikumbefore you
10. لَعَلَّكُمْlaʿallakumso that you may
11. تَتَّقُونَtattaqūnabecome righteous

ٱلَّذِى جَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلْأَرْضَ فِرَٰشًا وَٱلسَّمَآءَ بِنَآءً وَأَنزَلَ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ مَآءً فَأَخْرَجَ بِهِۦ مِنَ ٱلثَّمَرَٰتِ رِزْقًا لَّكُمْ ۖ فَلَا تَجْعَلُوا۟ لِلَّهِ أَندَادًا وَأَنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ

Transliteration alladhī jaʿala lakumu l-arḍa firāshan wal-samāa bināan wa-anzala mina l-samāi māan fa-akhraja bihi mina l-thamarāti riz'qan lakum falā tajʿalū lillahi andādan wa-antum taʿlamūna

English [He] who made for you the earth a bed [spread out] and the sky a ceiling and sent down from the sky, rain and brought forth thereby fruits as provision for you. So do not attribute to Allāh equals while you know [that there is nothing similar to Him].

1. ٱلَّذِىalladhīThe One Who
2. جَعَلَjaʿalamade
3. لَكُمُlakumufor you
4. ٱلْأَرْضَl-arḍathe earth
5. فِرَٰشًۭاfirāshana resting place
6. وَٱلسَّمَآءَwal-samāaand the sky
7. بِنَآءًۭbināana canopy
8. وَأَنزَلَwa-anzalaand sent down
9. مِنَminafrom
10. ٱلسَّمَآءِl-samāithe sky
11. مَآءًۭmāanwater
12. فَأَخْرَجَfa-akhrajathen brought forth
13. بِهِۦbihitherewith
14. مِنَmina[of]
15. ٱلثَّمَرَٰتِl-thamarātithe fruits
16. رِزْقًۭاriz'qan(as) provision
17. لَّكُمْ ۖlakumfor you
18. فَلَاfalāSo (do) not
19. تَجْعَلُوا۟tajʿalūset up
20. لِلَّهِlillahito Allah
21. أَندَادًۭاandādanrivals
22. وَأَنتُمْwa-antumwhile you
23. تَعْلَمُونَtaʿlamūna[you] know

وَإِن كُنتُمْ فِى رَيْبٍ مِّمَّا نَزَّلْنَا عَلَىٰ عَبْدِنَا فَأْتُوا۟ بِسُورَةٍ مِّن مِّثْلِهِۦ وَٱدْعُوا۟ شُهَدَآءَكُم مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ إِن كُنتُمْ صَـٰدِقِينَ

Transliteration wa-in kuntum fī raybin mimmā nazzalnā ʿalā ʿabdinā fatū bisūratin min mith'lihi wa-id'ʿū shuhadāakum min dūni l-lahi in kuntum ṣādiqīna

English And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down [i.e., the Qur’ān] upon Our Servant [i.e., Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ)], then produce a sūrah the like thereof and call upon your witnesses [i.e., supporters] other than Allāh, if you should be truthful.

1. وَإِنwa-inAnd if
2. كُنتُمْkuntumyou are
3. فِىfīin
4. رَيْبٍۢraybindoubt
5. مِّمَّاmimmāabout what
6. نَزَّلْنَاnazzalnāWe have revealed
7. عَلَىٰʿalāto
8. عَبْدِنَاʿabdināOur slave
9. فَأْتُوا۟fatūthen produce
10. بِسُورَةٍۢbisūratina chapter
11. مِّنmin[of]
12. مِّثْلِهِۦmith'lihilike it
13. وَٱدْعُوا۟wa-id'ʿūand call
14. شُهَدَآءَكُمshuhadāakumyour witnesses
15. مِّنminfrom
16. دُونِdūniother than
17. ٱللَّهِl-lahiAllah
18. إِنinif
19. كُنتُمْkuntumyou are
20. صَـٰدِقِينَṣādiqīnatruthful

فَإِن لَّمْ تَفْعَلُوا۟ وَلَن تَفْعَلُوا۟ فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱلنَّارَ ٱلَّتِى وَقُودُهَا ٱلنَّاسُ وَٱلْحِجَارَةُ ۖ أُعِدَّتْ لِلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

Transliteration fa-in lam tafʿalū walan tafʿalū fa-ittaqū l-nāra allatī waqūduhā l-nāsu wal-ḥijāratu uʿiddat lil'kāfirīna

English But if you do not - and you will never be able to - then fear the Fire, whose fuel is people and stones, prepared for the disbelievers.

1. فَإِنfa-inBut if
2. لَّمْlamnot
3. تَفْعَلُوا۟tafʿalūyou do
4. وَلَنwalanand never
5. تَفْعَلُوا۟tafʿalūwill you do
6. فَٱتَّقُوا۟fa-ittaqūthen fear
7. ٱلنَّارَl-nārathe Fire
8. ٱلَّتِىallatīwhose
9. وَقُودُهَاwaqūduhā[its] fuel
10. ٱلنَّاسُl-nāsu(is) [the] men
11. وَٱلْحِجَارَةُ ۖwal-ḥijāratuand [the] stones
12. أُعِدَّتْuʿiddatprepared
13. لِلْكَـٰفِرِينَlil'kāfirīnafor the disbelievers

وَبَشِّرِ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ أَنَّ لَهُمْ جَنَّـٰتٍ تَجْرِى مِن تَحْتِهَا ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ ۖ كُلَّمَا رُزِقُوا۟ مِنْهَا مِن ثَمَرَةٍ رِّزْقًا ۙ قَالُوا۟ هَـٰذَا ٱلَّذِى رُزِقْنَا مِن قَبْلُ ۖ وَأُتُوا۟ بِهِۦ مُتَشَـٰبِهًا ۖ وَلَهُمْ فِيهَآ أَزْوَٰجٌ مُّطَهَّرَةٌ ۖ وَهُمْ فِيهَا خَـٰلِدُونَ

Transliteration wabashiri alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti anna lahum jannātin tajrī min taḥtihā l-anhāru kullamā ruziqū min'hā min thamaratin riz'qan qālū hādhā alladhī ruziq'nā min qablu wa-utū bihi mutashābihan walahum fīhā azwājun muṭahharatun wahum fīhā khālidūna

English And give good tidings to those who believe and do righteous deeds that they will have gardens [in Paradise] beneath which rivers flow. Whenever they are provided with a provision of fruit therefrom, they will say, "This is what we were provided with before." And it is given to them in likeness. And they will have therein purified spouses, and they will abide therein eternally.

1. وَبَشِّرِwabashiriAnd give good news
2. ٱلَّذِينَalladhīna(to) those who
3. ءَامَنُوا۟āmanūbelieve
4. وَعَمِلُوا۟waʿamilūand do
5. ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِl-ṣāliḥāti[the] righteous deeds
6. أَنَّannathat
7. لَهُمْlahumfor them
8. جَنَّـٰتٍۢjannātin(will be) Gardens
9. تَجْرِىtajrīflow
10. مِنmin[from]
11. تَحْتِهَاtaḥtihāunder them
12. ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ ۖl-anhāruthe rivers
13. كُلَّمَاkullamāEvery time
14. رُزِقُوا۟ruziqūthey are provided
15. مِنْهَاmin'hātherefrom
16. مِنminof
17. ثَمَرَةٍۢthamaratinfruit
18. رِّزْقًۭا ۙriz'qan(as) provision
19. قَالُوا۟qālūthey (will) say
20. هَـٰذَاhādhāThis (is)
21. ٱلَّذِىalladhīthe one which
22. رُزِقْنَاruziq'nāwe were provided
23. مِنminfrom
24. قَبْلُ ۖqablubefore
25. وَأُتُوا۟wa-utūAnd they will be given
26. بِهِۦbihitherefrom
27. مُتَشَـٰبِهًۭا ۖmutashābihan(things) in resemblance
28. وَلَهُمْwalahumAnd for them
29. فِيهَآfīhātherein
30. أَزْوَٰجٌۭazwājunspouses
31. مُّطَهَّرَةٌۭ ۖmuṭahharatunpurified
32. وَهُمْwahumand they
33. فِيهَاfīhātherein
34. خَـٰلِدُونَkhālidūna(will) abide forever

۞ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يَسْتَحْىِۦٓ أَن يَضْرِبَ مَثَلًا مَّا بَعُوضَةً فَمَا فَوْقَهَا ۚ فَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ فَيَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّهُ ٱلْحَقُّ مِن رَّبِّهِمْ ۖ وَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ فَيَقُولُونَ مَاذَآ أَرَادَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَـٰذَا مَثَلًا ۘ يُضِلُّ بِهِۦ كَثِيرًا وَيَهْدِى بِهِۦ كَثِيرًا ۚ وَمَا يُضِلُّ بِهِۦٓ إِلَّا ٱلْفَـٰسِقِينَ

Transliteration inna l-laha lā yastaḥyī an yaḍriba mathalan mā baʿūḍatan famā fawqahā fa-ammā alladhīna āmanū fayaʿlamūna annahu l-ḥaqu min rabbihim wa-ammā alladhīna kafarū fayaqūlūna mādhā arāda l-lahu bihādhā mathalan yuḍillu bihi kathīran wayahdī bihi kathīran wamā yuḍillu bihi illā l-fāsiqīna

English Indeed, Allāh is not timid to present an example - that of a mosquito or what is smaller than it. And those who have believed know that it is the truth from their Lord. But as for those who disbelieve, they say, "What did Allāh intend by this as an example?" He misleads many thereby and guides many thereby. And He misleads not except the defiantly disobedient,

1. ۞ إِنَّinnaIndeed
2. ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
3. لَاlā(is) not
4. يَسْتَحْىِۦٓyastaḥyīashamed
5. أَنanto
6. يَضْرِبَyaḍribaset forth
7. مَثَلًۭاmathalanan example
8. مَّاmā(like) even
9. بَعُوضَةًۭbaʿūḍatan(of) a mosquito
10. فَمَاfamāand (even) something
11. فَوْقَهَا ۚfawqahāabove it
12. فَأَمَّاfa-ammāThen as for
13. ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
14. ءَامَنُوا۟āmanūbelieved
15. فَيَعْلَمُونَfayaʿlamūna[thus] they will know
16. أَنَّهُannahuthat it
17. ٱلْحَقُّl-ḥaqu(is) the truth
18. مِنminfrom
19. رَّبِّهِمْ ۖrabbihimtheir Lord
20. وَأَمَّاwa-ammāAnd as for
21. ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
22. كَفَرُوا۟kafarūdisbelieved
23. فَيَقُولُونَfayaqūlūna[thus] they will say
24. مَاذَآmādhāwhat
25. أَرَادَarāda(did) intend
26. ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
27. بِهَـٰذَاbihādhāby this
28. مَثَلًۭا ۘmathalanexample
29. يُضِلُّyuḍilluHe lets go astray
30. بِهِۦbihiby it
31. كَثِيرًۭاkathīranmany
32. وَيَهْدِىwayahdīand He guides
33. بِهِۦbihiby it
34. كَثِيرًۭا ۚkathīranmany
35. وَمَاwamāAnd not
36. يُضِلُّyuḍilluHe lets go astray
37. بِهِۦٓbihiby it
38. إِلَّاillāexcept
39. ٱلْفَـٰسِقِينَl-fāsiqīnathe defiantly disobedient

ٱلَّذِينَ يَنقُضُونَ عَهْدَ ٱللَّهِ مِنۢ بَعْدِ مِيثَـٰقِهِۦ وَيَقْطَعُونَ مَآ أَمَرَ ٱللَّهُ بِهِۦٓ أَن يُوصَلَ وَيُفْسِدُونَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ ۚ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْخَـٰسِرُونَ

Transliteration alladhīna yanquḍūna ʿahda l-lahi min baʿdi mīthāqihi wayaqṭaʿūna mā amara l-lahu bihi an yūṣala wayuf'sidūna fī l-arḍi ulāika humu l-khāsirūna

English Who break the covenant of Allāh after contracting it and sever that which Allāh has ordered to be joined and cause corruption on earth. It is those who are the losers.

1. ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnaThose who
2. يَنقُضُونَyanquḍūnabreak
3. عَهْدَʿahda(the) Covenant
4. ٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allah
5. مِنۢminfrom
6. بَعْدِbaʿdiafter
7. مِيثَـٰقِهِۦmīthāqihiits ratification
8. وَيَقْطَعُونَwayaqṭaʿūnaand [they] cut
9. مَآmāwhat
10. أَمَرَamarahas ordered
11. ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
12. بِهِۦٓbihiit
13. أَنanto
14. يُوصَلَyūṣalabe joined
15. وَيُفْسِدُونَwayuf'sidūnaand [they] spread corruption
16. فِىfīin
17. ٱلْأَرْضِ ۚl-arḍithe earth
18. أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَulāikaThose
19. هُمُhumuthey
20. ٱلْخَـٰسِرُونَl-khāsirūna(are) the losers

كَيْفَ تَكْفُرُونَ بِٱللَّهِ وَكُنتُمْ أَمْوَٰتًا فَأَحْيَـٰكُمْ ۖ ثُمَّ يُمِيتُكُمْ ثُمَّ يُحْيِيكُمْ ثُمَّ إِلَيْهِ تُرْجَعُونَ

Transliteration kayfa takfurūna bil-lahi wakuntum amwātan fa-aḥyākum thumma yumītukum thumma yuḥ'yīkum thumma ilayhi tur'jaʿūna

English How can you disbelieve in Allāh when you were lifeless and He brought you to life; then He will cause you to die, then He will bring you [back] to life, and then to Him you will be returned.

1. كَيْفَkayfaHow
2. تَكْفُرُونَtakfurūna(can) you disbelieve
3. بِٱللَّهِbil-lahiin Allah
4. وَكُنتُمْwakuntumWhile you were
5. أَمْوَٰتًۭاamwātandead
6. فَأَحْيَـٰكُمْ ۖfa-aḥyākumthen He gave you life
7. ثُمَّthummathen
8. يُمِيتُكُمْyumītukumHe will cause you to die
9. ثُمَّthummathen
10. يُحْيِيكُمْyuḥ'yīkumHe will give you life
11. ثُمَّthummathen
12. إِلَيْهِilayhito Him
13. تُرْجَعُونَtur'jaʿūnayou will be returned

هُوَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ لَكُم مَّا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ جَمِيعًا ثُمَّ ٱسْتَوَىٰٓ إِلَى ٱلسَّمَآءِ فَسَوَّىٰهُنَّ سَبْعَ سَمَـٰوَٰتٍ ۚ وَهُوَ بِكُلِّ شَىْءٍ عَلِيمٌ

Transliteration huwa alladhī khalaqa lakum mā fī l-arḍi jamīʿan thumma is'tawā ilā l-samāi fasawwāhunna sabʿa samāwātin wahuwa bikulli shayin ʿalīmun

English It is He who created for you all of that which is on the earth. Then He directed Himself to the heaven, [His being above all creation], and made them seven heavens, and He is Knowing of all things.

1. هُوَhuwaHe
2. ٱلَّذِىalladhī(is) the One Who
3. خَلَقَkhalaqacreated
4. لَكُمlakumfor you
5. مَّاmāwhat
6. فِىfī(is) in
7. ٱلْأَرْضِl-arḍithe earth
8. جَمِيعًۭاjamīʿanall
9. ثُمَّthummaMoreover
10. ٱسْتَوَىٰٓis'tawāHe turned
11. إِلَىilāto
12. ٱلسَّمَآءِl-samāithe heaven
13. فَسَوَّىٰهُنَّfasawwāhunnaand fashioned them
14. سَبْعَsabʿaseven
15. سَمَـٰوَٰتٍۢ ۚsamāwātinheavens
16. وَهُوَwahuwaAnd He
17. بِكُلِّbikulliof every
18. شَىْءٍshayinthing
19. عَلِيمٌۭʿalīmun(is) All-Knowing

وَإِذْ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ إِنِّى جَاعِلٌ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ خَلِيفَةً ۖ قَالُوٓا۟ أَتَجْعَلُ فِيهَا مَن يُفْسِدُ فِيهَا وَيَسْفِكُ ٱلدِّمَآءَ وَنَحْنُ نُسَبِّحُ بِحَمْدِكَ وَنُقَدِّسُ لَكَ ۖ قَالَ إِنِّىٓ أَعْلَمُ مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ

Transliteration wa-idh qāla rabbuka lil'malāikati innī jāʿilun fī l-arḍi khalīfatan qālū atajʿalu fīhā man yuf'sidu fīhā wayasfiku l-dimāa wanaḥnu nusabbiḥu biḥamdika wanuqaddisu laka qāla innī aʿlamu mā lā taʿlamūna

English And [mention, O Muḥammad], when your Lord said to the angels, "Indeed, I will make upon the earth a successive authority." They said, "Will You place upon it one who causes corruption therein and sheds blood, while we exalt You with praise and declare Your perfection?" He [Allāh] said, "Indeed, I know that which you do not know."

1. وَإِذْwa-idhAnd when
2. قَالَqālasaid
3. رَبُّكَrabbukayour Lord
4. لِلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِlil'malāikatito the angels
5. إِنِّىinnīIndeed, I (am)
6. جَاعِلٌۭjāʿilungoing to place
7. فِىfīin
8. ٱلْأَرْضِl-arḍithe earth
9. خَلِيفَةًۭ ۖkhalīfatana vicegerent
10. قَالُوٓا۟qālūthey said
11. أَتَجْعَلُatajʿaluWill You place
12. فِيهَاfīhāin it
13. مَنman(one) who
14. يُفْسِدُyuf'siduwill spread corruption
15. فِيهَاfīhāin it
16. وَيَسْفِكُwayasfikuand will shed
17. ٱلدِّمَآءَl-dimāa[the] blood[s]
18. وَنَحْنُwanaḥnuwhile we
19. نُسَبِّحُnusabbiḥu[we] glorify (You)
20. بِحَمْدِكَbiḥamdikawith Your praises
21. وَنُقَدِّسُwanuqaddisuand we sanctify
22. لَكَ ۖlaka[to] You
23. قَالَqālaHe said
24. إِنِّىٓinnīIndeed, I
25. أَعْلَمُaʿlamu[I] know
26. مَاmāwhat
27. لَاlānot
28. تَعْلَمُونَtaʿlamūnayou know

وَعَلَّمَ ءَادَمَ ٱلْأَسْمَآءَ كُلَّهَا ثُمَّ عَرَضَهُمْ عَلَى ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ فَقَالَ أَنۢبِـُٔونِى بِأَسْمَآءِ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ إِن كُنتُمْ صَـٰدِقِينَ

Transliteration waʿallama ādama l-asmāa kullahā thumma ʿaraḍahum ʿalā l-malāikati faqāla anbiūnī bi-asmāi hāulāi in kuntum ṣādiqīna

English And He taught Adam the names - all of them. Then He showed them to the angels and said, "Inform Me of the names of these, if you are truthful."

1. وَعَلَّمَwaʿallamaAnd He taught
2. ءَادَمَādamaAdam
3. ٱلْأَسْمَآءَl-asmāathe names
4. كُلَّهَاkullahāall of them
5. ثُمَّthummaThen
6. عَرَضَهُمْʿaraḍahumHe displayed them
7. عَلَىʿalāto
8. ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِl-malāikatithe angels
9. فَقَالَfaqālathen He said
10. أَنۢبِـُٔونِىanbiūnīInform Me
11. بِأَسْمَآءِbi-asmāiof (the) names
12. هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِhāulāi(of) these
13. إِنinif
14. كُنتُمْkuntumyou are
15. صَـٰدِقِينَṣādiqīnatruthful

قَالُوا۟ سُبْحَـٰنَكَ لَا عِلْمَ لَنَآ إِلَّا مَا عَلَّمْتَنَآ ۖ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلْعَلِيمُ ٱلْحَكِيمُ

Transliteration qālū sub'ḥānaka lā ʿil'ma lanā illā mā ʿallamtanā innaka anta l-ʿalīmu l-ḥakīmu

English They said, "Exalted are You; we have no knowledge except what You have taught us. Indeed, it is You who is the Knowing, the Wise."

1. قَالُوا۟qālūThey said
2. سُبْحَـٰنَكَsub'ḥānakaGlory be to You
3. لَاlāNo
4. عِلْمَʿil'maknowledge
5. لَنَآlanā(is) for us
6. إِلَّاillāexcept
7. مَاmāwhat
8. عَلَّمْتَنَآ ۖʿallamtanāYou have taught us
9. إِنَّكَinnakaIndeed You
10. أَنتَantaYou
11. ٱلْعَلِيمُl-ʿalīmu(are) the All-Knowing
12. ٱلْحَكِيمُl-ḥakīmuthe All-Wise

قَالَ يَـٰٓـَٔادَمُ أَنۢبِئْهُم بِأَسْمَآئِهِمْ ۖ فَلَمَّآ أَنۢبَأَهُم بِأَسْمَآئِهِمْ قَالَ أَلَمْ أَقُل لَّكُمْ إِنِّىٓ أَعْلَمُ غَيْبَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَأَعْلَمُ مَا تُبْدُونَ وَمَا كُنتُمْ تَكْتُمُونَ

Transliteration qāla yāādamu anbi'hum bi-asmāihim falammā anba-ahum bi-asmāihim qāla alam aqul lakum innī aʿlamu ghayba l-samāwāti wal-arḍi wa-aʿlamu mā tub'dūna wamā kuntum taktumūna

English He said, "O Adam, inform them of their names." And when he had informed them of their names, He said, "Did I not tell you that I know the unseen [aspects] of the heavens and the earth? And I know what you reveal and what you have concealed."

1. قَالَqālaHe said
2. يَـٰٓـَٔادَمُyāādamuO Adam
3. أَنۢبِئْهُمanbi'humInform them
4. بِأَسْمَآئِهِمْ ۖbi-asmāihimof their names
5. فَلَمَّآfalammāAnd when
6. أَنۢبَأَهُمanba-ahumhe had informed them
7. بِأَسْمَآئِهِمْbi-asmāihimof their names
8. قَالَqālaHe said
9. أَلَمْalamDid not
10. أَقُلaqulI say
11. لَّكُمْlakumto you
12. إِنِّىٓinnīIndeed, I
13. أَعْلَمُaʿlamu[I] know
14. غَيْبَghayba(the) unseen
15. ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِl-samāwāti(of) the heavens
16. وَٱلْأَرْضِwal-arḍiand the earth
17. وَأَعْلَمُwa-aʿlamuand I know
18. مَاmāwhat
19. تُبْدُونَtub'dūnayou reveal
20. وَمَاwamāand what
21. كُنتُمْkuntumyou [were]
22. تَكْتُمُونَtaktumūnaconceal

وَإِذْ قُلْنَا لِلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ ٱسْجُدُوا۟ لِـَٔادَمَ فَسَجَدُوٓا۟ إِلَّآ إِبْلِيسَ أَبَىٰ وَٱسْتَكْبَرَ وَكَانَ مِنَ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

Transliteration wa-idh qul'nā lil'malāikati us'judū liādama fasajadū illā ib'līsa abā wa-is'takbara wakāna mina l-kāfirīna

English And [mention] when We said to the angels, "Prostrate before Adam"; so they prostrated, except for Iblees. He refused and was arrogant and became of the disbelievers.

1. وَإِذْwa-idhAnd when
2. قُلْنَاqul'nāWe said
3. لِلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِlil'malāikatito the angels
4. ٱسْجُدُوا۟us'judūProstrate
5. لِـَٔادَمَliādamato Adam
6. فَسَجَدُوٓا۟fasajadū[so] they prostrated
7. إِلَّآillāexcept
8. إِبْلِيسَib'līsaIblis
9. أَبَىٰabāHe refused
10. وَٱسْتَكْبَرَwa-is'takbaraand was arrogant
11. وَكَانَwakānaand became
12. مِنَminaof
13. ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَl-kāfirīnathe disbelievers

وَقُلْنَا يَـٰٓـَٔادَمُ ٱسْكُنْ أَنتَ وَزَوْجُكَ ٱلْجَنَّةَ وَكُلَا مِنْهَا رَغَدًا حَيْثُ شِئْتُمَا وَلَا تَقْرَبَا هَـٰذِهِ ٱلشَّجَرَةَ فَتَكُونَا مِنَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

Transliteration waqul'nā yāādamu us'kun anta wazawjuka l-janata wakulā min'hā raghadan ḥaythu shi'tumā walā taqrabā hādhihi l-shajarata fatakūnā mina l-ẓālimīna

English And We said, "O Adam, dwell, you and your wife, in Paradise and eat therefrom in [ease and] abundance from wherever you will. But do not approach this tree, lest you be among the wrongdoers."

1. وَقُلْنَاwaqul'nāAnd We said
2. يَـٰٓـَٔادَمُyāādamuO Adam
3. ٱسْكُنْus'kunDwell
4. أَنتَantayou
5. وَزَوْجُكَwazawjukaand your spouse
6. ٱلْجَنَّةَl-janata(in) Paradise
7. وَكُلَاwakulāand [you both] eat
8. مِنْهَاmin'hāfrom it
9. رَغَدًاraghadanfreely
10. حَيْثُḥaythu(from) wherever
11. شِئْتُمَاshi'tumāyou [both] wish
12. وَلَاwalāBut do not
13. تَقْرَبَاtaqrabā[you two] approach
14. هَـٰذِهِhādhihithis
15. ٱلشَّجَرَةَl-shajarata[the] tree
16. فَتَكُونَاfatakūnālest you [both] be
17. مِنَminaof
18. ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَl-ẓālimīnathe wrongdoers

فَأَزَلَّهُمَا ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ عَنْهَا فَأَخْرَجَهُمَا مِمَّا كَانَا فِيهِ ۖ وَقُلْنَا ٱهْبِطُوا۟ بَعْضُكُمْ لِبَعْضٍ عَدُوٌّ ۖ وَلَكُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ مُسْتَقَرٌّ وَمَتَـٰعٌ إِلَىٰ حِينٍ

Transliteration fa-azallahumā l-shayṭānu ʿanhā fa-akhrajahumā mimmā kānā fīhi waqul'nā ih'biṭū baʿḍukum libaʿḍin ʿaduwwun walakum fī l-arḍi mus'taqarrun wamatāʿun ilā ḥīnin

English But Satan caused them to slip out of it and removed them from that [condition] in which they had been. And We said, "Go down, [all of you], as enemies to one another, and you will have upon the earth a place of settlement and provision for a time."

1. فَأَزَلَّهُمَاfa-azallahumāThen made [both of] them slip
2. ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُl-shayṭānuthe Shaitaan
3. عَنْهَاʿanhāfrom it
4. فَأَخْرَجَهُمَاfa-akhrajahumāand he got [both of] them out
5. مِمَّاmimmāfrom what
6. كَانَاkānāthey [both] were
7. فِيهِ ۖfīhiin [it]
8. وَقُلْنَاwaqul'nāAnd We said
9. ٱهْبِطُوا۟ih'biṭūGo down (all of you)
10. بَعْضُكُمْbaʿḍukumsome of you
11. لِبَعْضٍlibaʿḍinto others
12. عَدُوٌّۭ ۖʿaduwwun(as) enemy
13. وَلَكُمْwalakumand for you
14. فِىfīin
15. ٱلْأَرْضِl-arḍithe earth
16. مُسْتَقَرٌّۭmus'taqarrun(is) a dwelling place
17. وَمَتَـٰعٌwamatāʿunand a provision
18. إِلَىٰilāfor
19. حِينٍۢḥīnina period

فَتَلَقَّىٰٓ ءَادَمُ مِن رَّبِّهِۦ كَلِمَـٰتٍ فَتَابَ عَلَيْهِ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلتَّوَّابُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ

Transliteration fatalaqqā ādamu min rabbihi kalimātin fatāba ʿalayhi innahu huwa l-tawābu l-raḥīmu

English Then Adam received from his Lord [some] words, and He accepted his repentance. Indeed, it is He who is the Accepting of Repentance, the Merciful.

1. فَتَلَقَّىٰٓfatalaqqāThen received
2. ءَادَمُādamuAdam
3. مِنminfrom
4. رَّبِّهِۦrabbihihis Lord
5. كَلِمَـٰتٍۢkalimātinwords
6. فَتَابَfatābaSo (his Lord) turned
7. عَلَيْهِ ۚʿalayhitowards him
8. إِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed He
9. هُوَhuwaHe
10. ٱلتَّوَّابُl-tawābu(is) the Oft-returning (to mercy)
11. ٱلرَّحِيمُl-raḥīmuthe Most Merciful

قُلْنَا ٱهْبِطُوا۟ مِنْهَا جَمِيعًا ۖ فَإِمَّا يَأْتِيَنَّكُم مِّنِّى هُدًى فَمَن تَبِعَ هُدَاىَ فَلَا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ

Transliteration qul'nā ih'biṭū min'hā jamīʿan fa-immā yatiyannakum minnī hudan faman tabiʿa hudāya falā khawfun ʿalayhim walā hum yaḥzanūna

English We said, "Go down from it, all of you. And when guidance comes to you from Me, whoever follows My guidance - there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.

1. قُلْنَاqul'nāWe said
2. ٱهْبِطُوا۟ih'biṭūGo down
3. مِنْهَاmin'hāfrom it
4. جَمِيعًۭا ۖjamīʿanall (of you)
5. فَإِمَّاfa-immāand when
6. يَأْتِيَنَّكُمyatiyannakumcomes to you
7. مِّنِّىminnīfrom Me
8. هُدًۭىhudanGuidance
9. فَمَنfamanthen whoever
10. تَبِعَtabiʿafollows
11. هُدَاىَhudāyaMy Guidance
12. فَلَاfalā[then] no
13. خَوْفٌkhawfunfear
14. عَلَيْهِمْʿalayhim(will be) on them
15. وَلَاwalāand not
16. هُمْhumthey
17. يَحْزَنُونَyaḥzanūnawill grieve

وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ وَكَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَآ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلنَّارِ ۖ هُمْ فِيهَا خَـٰلِدُونَ

Transliteration wa-alladhīna kafarū wakadhabū biāyātinā ulāika aṣḥābu l-nāri hum fīhā khālidūna

English And those who disbelieve and deny Our signs - those will be companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally."

1. وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those
2. كَفَرُوا۟kafarūwho disbelieve[d]
3. وَكَذَّبُوا۟wakadhabūand deny
4. بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَآbiāyātināOur Signs
5. أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَulāikathose
6. أَصْحَـٰبُaṣḥābu(are the) companions
7. ٱلنَّارِ ۖl-nāri(of) the Fire
8. هُمْhumthey
9. فِيهَاfīhāin it
10. خَـٰلِدُونَkhālidūna(will) abide forever

يَـٰبَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ ٱذْكُرُوا۟ نِعْمَتِىَ ٱلَّتِىٓ أَنْعَمْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَأَوْفُوا۟ بِعَهْدِىٓ أُوفِ بِعَهْدِكُمْ وَإِيَّـٰىَ فَٱرْهَبُونِ

Transliteration yābanī is'rāīla udh'kurū niʿ'matiya allatī anʿamtu ʿalaykum wa-awfū biʿahdī ūfi biʿahdikum wa-iyyāya fa-ir'habūni

English O Children of Israel, remember My favor which I have bestowed upon you and fulfill My covenant [upon you] that I will fulfill your covenant [from Me], and be afraid of [only] Me.

1. يَـٰبَنِىٓyābanīO Children
2. إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَis'rāīla(of) Israel
3. ٱذْكُرُوا۟udh'kurūRemember
4. نِعْمَتِىَniʿ'matiyaMy Favor
5. ٱلَّتِىٓallatīwhich
6. أَنْعَمْتُanʿamtuI bestowed
7. عَلَيْكُمْʿalaykumupon you
8. وَأَوْفُوا۟wa-awfūand fulfill
9. بِعَهْدِىٓbiʿahdīMy Covenant
10. أُوفِūfiI will fulfill
11. بِعَهْدِكُمْbiʿahdikumyour covenant
12. وَإِيَّـٰىَwa-iyyāyaand Me Alone
13. فَٱرْهَبُونِfa-ir'habūnifear [Me]

وَءَامِنُوا۟ بِمَآ أَنزَلْتُ مُصَدِّقًا لِّمَا مَعَكُمْ وَلَا تَكُونُوٓا۟ أَوَّلَ كَافِرٍۭ بِهِۦ ۖ وَلَا تَشْتَرُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِى ثَمَنًا قَلِيلًا وَإِيَّـٰىَ فَٱتَّقُونِ

Transliteration waāminū bimā anzaltu muṣaddiqan limā maʿakum walā takūnū awwala kāfirin bihi walā tashtarū biāyātī thamanan qalīlan wa-iyyāya fa-ittaqūni

English And believe in what I have sent down confirming that which is [already] with you, and be not the first to disbelieve in it. And do not exchange My signs for a small price, and fear [only] Me.

1. وَءَامِنُوا۟waāminūAnd believe
2. بِمَآbimāin what
3. أَنزَلْتُanzaltuI have sent down
4. مُصَدِّقًۭاmuṣaddiqanconfirming
5. لِّمَاlimāthat which
6. مَعَكُمْmaʿakum(is) with you
7. وَلَاwalāand (do) not
8. تَكُونُوٓا۟takūnūbe
9. أَوَّلَawwala(the) first
10. كَافِرٍۭkāfirindisbeliever
11. بِهِۦ ۖbihiof it
12. وَلَاwalāAnd (do) not
13. تَشْتَرُوا۟tashtarūexchange
14. بِـَٔايَـٰتِىbiāyātīMy Signs (for)
15. ثَمَنًۭاthamanana price
16. قَلِيلًۭاqalīlansmall
17. وَإِيَّـٰىَwa-iyyāyaand Me Alone
18. فَٱتَّقُونِfa-ittaqūnifear [Me]

وَلَا تَلْبِسُوا۟ ٱلْحَقَّ بِٱلْبَـٰطِلِ وَتَكْتُمُوا۟ ٱلْحَقَّ وَأَنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ

Transliteration walā talbisū l-ḥaqa bil-bāṭili wataktumū l-ḥaqa wa-antum taʿlamūna

English And do not mix the truth with falsehood or conceal the truth while you know [it].

1. وَلَاwalāAnd (do) not
2. تَلْبِسُوا۟talbisūmix
3. ٱلْحَقَّl-ḥaqathe Truth
4. بِٱلْبَـٰطِلِbil-bāṭiliwith [the] falsehood
5. وَتَكْتُمُوا۟wataktumūand conceal
6. ٱلْحَقَّl-ḥaqathe Truth
7. وَأَنتُمْwa-antumwhile you
8. تَعْلَمُونَtaʿlamūna[you] know

وَأَقِيمُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتُوا۟ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَٱرْكَعُوا۟ مَعَ ٱلرَّٰكِعِينَ

Transliteration wa-aqīmū l-ṣalata waātū l-zakata wa-ir'kaʿū maʿa l-rākiʿīna

English And establish prayer and give zakāh and bow with those who bow [in worship and obedience].

1. وَأَقِيمُوا۟wa-aqīmūAnd establish
2. ٱلصَّلَوٰةَl-ṣalatathe prayer
3. وَءَاتُوا۟waātūand give
4. ٱلزَّكَوٰةَl-zakatazakah
5. وَٱرْكَعُوا۟wa-ir'kaʿūand bow down
6. مَعَmaʿawith
7. ٱلرَّٰكِعِينَl-rākiʿīnathose who bow down

۞ أَتَأْمُرُونَ ٱلنَّاسَ بِٱلْبِرِّ وَتَنسَوْنَ أَنفُسَكُمْ وَأَنتُمْ تَتْلُونَ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ ۚ أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ

Transliteration atamurūna l-nāsa bil-biri watansawna anfusakum wa-antum tatlūna l-kitāba afalā taʿqilūna

English Do you order righteousness of the people and forget yourselves while you recite the Scripture? Then will you not reason?

1. ۞ أَتَأْمُرُونَatamurūnaDo you order
2. ٱلنَّاسَl-nāsa[the] people
3. بِٱلْبِرِّbil-biri[the] righteousness
4. وَتَنسَوْنَwatansawnaand you forget
5. أَنفُسَكُمْanfusakumyourselves
6. وَأَنتُمْwa-antumwhile you
7. تَتْلُونَtatlūna[you] recite
8. ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ ۚl-kitābathe Book
9. أَفَلَاafalāThen, will not
10. تَعْقِلُونَtaʿqilūnayou use reason

وَٱسْتَعِينُوا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ وَٱلصَّلَوٰةِ ۚ وَإِنَّهَا لَكَبِيرَةٌ إِلَّا عَلَى ٱلْخَـٰشِعِينَ

Transliteration wa-is'taʿīnū bil-ṣabri wal-ṣalati wa-innahā lakabīratun illā ʿalā l-khāshiʿīna

English And seek help through patience and prayer; and indeed, it is difficult except for the humbly submissive [to Allāh]

1. وَٱسْتَعِينُوا۟wa-is'taʿīnūAnd seek help
2. بِٱلصَّبْرِbil-ṣabrithrough patience
3. وَٱلصَّلَوٰةِ ۚwal-ṣalatiand the prayer
4. وَإِنَّهَاwa-innahāand indeed, it
5. لَكَبِيرَةٌlakabīratun(is) surely difficult
6. إِلَّاillāexcept
7. عَلَىʿalāon
8. ٱلْخَـٰشِعِينَl-khāshiʿīnathe humble ones

ٱلَّذِينَ يَظُنُّونَ أَنَّهُم مُّلَـٰقُوا۟ رَبِّهِمْ وَأَنَّهُمْ إِلَيْهِ رَٰجِعُونَ

Transliteration alladhīna yaẓunnūna annahum mulāqū rabbihim wa-annahum ilayhi rājiʿūna

English Who are certain that they will meet their Lord and that they will return to Him.

1. ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnaThose who
2. يَظُنُّونَyaẓunnūnabelieve
3. أَنَّهُمannahumthat they
4. مُّلَـٰقُوا۟mulāqūwill meet
5. رَبِّهِمْrabbihimtheir Lord
6. وَأَنَّهُمْwa-annahumand that they
7. إِلَيْهِilayhito Him
8. رَٰجِعُونَrājiʿūnawill return

يَـٰبَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ ٱذْكُرُوا۟ نِعْمَتِىَ ٱلَّتِىٓ أَنْعَمْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَأَنِّى فَضَّلْتُكُمْ عَلَى ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

Transliteration yābanī is'rāīla udh'kurū niʿ'matiya allatī anʿamtu ʿalaykum wa-annī faḍḍaltukum ʿalā l-ʿālamīna

English O Children of Israel, remember My favor that I have bestowed upon you and that I preferred you over the worlds [i.e., peoples].

1. يَـٰبَنِىٓyābanīO Children
2. إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَis'rāīla(of) Israel
3. ٱذْكُرُوا۟udh'kurūRemember
4. نِعْمَتِىَniʿ'matiyaMy Favor
5. ٱلَّتِىٓallatīwhich
6. أَنْعَمْتُanʿamtuI bestowed
7. عَلَيْكُمْʿalaykumupon you
8. وَأَنِّىwa-annīand that I
9. فَضَّلْتُكُمْfaḍḍaltukum[I] preferred you
10. عَلَىʿalāover
11. ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَl-ʿālamīnathe worlds

وَٱتَّقُوا۟ يَوْمًا لَّا تَجْزِى نَفْسٌ عَن نَّفْسٍ شَيْـًٔا وَلَا يُقْبَلُ مِنْهَا شَفَـٰعَةٌ وَلَا يُؤْخَذُ مِنْهَا عَدْلٌ وَلَا هُمْ يُنصَرُونَ

Transliteration wa-ittaqū yawman lā tajzī nafsun ʿan nafsin shayan walā yuq'balu min'hā shafāʿatun walā yu'khadhu min'hā ʿadlun walā hum yunṣarūna

English And fear a Day when no soul will suffice for another soul at all, nor will intercession be accepted from it, nor will compensation be taken from it, nor will they be aided.

1. وَٱتَّقُوا۟wa-ittaqūAnd fear
2. يَوْمًۭاyawmana day
3. لَّاlā(will) not
4. تَجْزِىtajzīavail
5. نَفْسٌnafsunany soul
6. عَنʿanfor
7. نَّفْسٍۢnafsin(another) soul
8. شَيْـًۭٔاshayananything
9. وَلَاwalāand not
10. يُقْبَلُyuq'baluwill be accepted
11. مِنْهَاmin'hāfrom it
12. شَفَـٰعَةٌۭshafāʿatunany intercession
13. وَلَاwalāand not
14. يُؤْخَذُyu'khadhuwill be taken
15. مِنْهَاmin'hāfrom it
16. عَدْلٌۭʿadluna compensation
17. وَلَاwalāand not
18. هُمْhumthey
19. يُنصَرُونَyunṣarūnawill be helped

وَإِذْ نَجَّيْنَـٰكُم مِّنْ ءَالِ فِرْعَوْنَ يَسُومُونَكُمْ سُوٓءَ ٱلْعَذَابِ يُذَبِّحُونَ أَبْنَآءَكُمْ وَيَسْتَحْيُونَ نِسَآءَكُمْ ۚ وَفِى ذَٰلِكُم بَلَآءٌ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ عَظِيمٌ

Transliteration wa-idh najjaynākum min āli fir'ʿawna yasūmūnakum sūa l-ʿadhābi yudhabbiḥūna abnāakum wayastaḥyūna nisāakum wafī dhālikum balāon min rabbikum ʿaẓīmun

English And [recall] when We saved you [i.e., your forefathers] from the people of Pharaoh, who afflicted you with the worst torment, slaughtering your [newborn] sons and keeping your females alive. And in that was a great trial from your Lord.

1. وَإِذْwa-idhAnd when
2. نَجَّيْنَـٰكُمnajjaynākumWe saved you
3. مِّنْminfrom
4. ءَالِāli(the) people
5. فِرْعَوْنَfir'ʿawna(of) Firaun
6. يَسُومُونَكُمْyasūmūnakum(who were) afflicting you (with)
7. سُوٓءَsūahorrible
8. ٱلْعَذَابِl-ʿadhābitorment
9. يُذَبِّحُونَyudhabbiḥūnaslaughtering
10. أَبْنَآءَكُمْabnāakumyour sons
11. وَيَسْتَحْيُونَwayastaḥyūnaand letting live
12. نِسَآءَكُمْ ۚnisāakumyour women
13. وَفِىwafīAnd in
14. ذَٰلِكُمdhālikumthat
15. بَلَآءٌۭbalāon(was) a trial
16. مِّنminfrom
17. رَّبِّكُمْrabbikumyour Lord
18. عَظِيمٌۭʿaẓīmungreat

وَإِذْ فَرَقْنَا بِكُمُ ٱلْبَحْرَ فَأَنجَيْنَـٰكُمْ وَأَغْرَقْنَآ ءَالَ فِرْعَوْنَ وَأَنتُمْ تَنظُرُونَ

Transliteration wa-idh faraqnā bikumu l-baḥra fa-anjaynākum wa-aghraqnā āla fir'ʿawna wa-antum tanẓurūna

English And [recall] when We parted the sea for you and saved you and drowned the people of Pharaoh while you were looking on.

1. وَإِذْwa-idhAnd when
2. فَرَقْنَاfaraqnāWe parted
3. بِكُمُbikumufor you
4. ٱلْبَحْرَl-baḥrathe sea
5. فَأَنجَيْنَـٰكُمْfa-anjaynākumthen We saved you
6. وَأَغْرَقْنَآwa-aghraqnāand We drowned
7. ءَالَāla(the) people
8. فِرْعَوْنَfir'ʿawna(of) Firaun
9. وَأَنتُمْwa-antumwhile you
10. تَنظُرُونَtanẓurūna(were) looking

وَإِذْ وَٰعَدْنَا مُوسَىٰٓ أَرْبَعِينَ لَيْلَةً ثُمَّ ٱتَّخَذْتُمُ ٱلْعِجْلَ مِنۢ بَعْدِهِۦ وَأَنتُمْ ظَـٰلِمُونَ

Transliteration wa-idh wāʿadnā mūsā arbaʿīna laylatan thumma ittakhadhtumu l-ʿij'la min baʿdihi wa-antum ẓālimūna

English And [recall] when We made an appointment with Moses for forty nights. Then you took [for worship] the calf after him [i.e., his departure], while you were wrongdoers.

1. وَإِذْwa-idhAnd when
2. وَٰعَدْنَاwāʿadnāWe appointed
3. مُوسَىٰٓmūsā(for) Musa
4. أَرْبَعِينَarbaʿīnaforty
5. لَيْلَةًۭlaylatannights
6. ثُمَّthummaThen
7. ٱتَّخَذْتُمُittakhadhtumuyou took
8. ٱلْعِجْلَl-ʿij'lathe calf
9. مِنۢminfrom
10. بَعْدِهِۦbaʿdihiafter him
11. وَأَنتُمْwa-antumand you
12. ظَـٰلِمُونَẓālimūna(were) wrongdoers

ثُمَّ عَفَوْنَا عَنكُم مِّنۢ بَعْدِ ذَٰلِكَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ

Transliteration thumma ʿafawnā ʿankum min baʿdi dhālika laʿallakum tashkurūna

English Then We forgave you after that so perhaps you would be grateful.

1. ثُمَّthummaThen
2. عَفَوْنَاʿafawnāWe forgave
3. عَنكُمʿankumyou
4. مِّنۢminfrom
5. بَعْدِbaʿdiafter
6. ذَٰلِكَdhālikathat
7. لَعَلَّكُمْlaʿallakumso that you may
8. تَشْكُرُونَtashkurūna(be) grateful

وَإِذْ ءَاتَيْنَا مُوسَى ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ وَٱلْفُرْقَانَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَهْتَدُونَ

Transliteration wa-idh ātaynā mūsā l-kitāba wal-fur'qāna laʿallakum tahtadūna

English And [recall] when We gave Moses the Scripture and criterion that perhaps you would be guided.

1. وَإِذْwa-idhAnd when
2. ءَاتَيْنَاātaynāWe gave
3. مُوسَىmūsāMusa
4. ٱلْكِتَـٰبَl-kitābathe Book
5. وَٱلْفُرْقَانَwal-fur'qānaand the Criterion
6. لَعَلَّكُمْlaʿallakumperhaps you
7. تَهْتَدُونَtahtadūna(would be) guided

وَإِذْ قَالَ مُوسَىٰ لِقَوْمِهِۦ يَـٰقَوْمِ إِنَّكُمْ ظَلَمْتُمْ أَنفُسَكُم بِٱتِّخَاذِكُمُ ٱلْعِجْلَ فَتُوبُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰ بَارِئِكُمْ فَٱقْتُلُوٓا۟ أَنفُسَكُمْ ذَٰلِكُمْ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ عِندَ بَارِئِكُمْ فَتَابَ عَلَيْكُمْ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلتَّوَّابُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ

Transliteration wa-idh qāla mūsā liqawmihi yāqawmi innakum ẓalamtum anfusakum bi-ittikhādhikumu l-ʿij'la fatūbū ilā bāri-ikum fa-uq'tulū anfusakum dhālikum khayrun lakum ʿinda bāri-ikum fatāba ʿalaykum innahu huwa l-tawābu l-raḥīmu

English And [recall] when Moses said to his people, "O my people, indeed you have wronged yourselves by your taking of the calf [for worship]. So repent to your Creator and kill yourselves [i.e., the guilty among you]. That is best for [all of] you in the sight of your Creator." Then He accepted your repentance; indeed, He is the Accepting of Repentance, the Merciful.

1. وَإِذْwa-idhAnd when
2. قَالَqālasaid
3. مُوسَىٰmūsāMusa
4. لِقَوْمِهِۦliqawmihito his people
5. يَـٰقَوْمِyāqawmiO my people
6. إِنَّكُمْinnakumIndeed, you
7. ظَلَمْتُمْẓalamtum[you] have wronged
8. أَنفُسَكُمanfusakumyourselves
9. بِٱتِّخَاذِكُمُbi-ittikhādhikumuby your taking
10. ٱلْعِجْلَl-ʿij'lathe calf
11. فَتُوبُوٓا۟fatūbūSo turn in repentance
12. إِلَىٰilāto
13. بَارِئِكُمْbāri-ikumyour Creator
14. فَٱقْتُلُوٓا۟fa-uq'tulūand kill
15. أَنفُسَكُمْanfusakumyourselves
16. ذَٰلِكُمْdhālikumThat
17. خَيْرٌۭkhayrun(is) better
18. لَّكُمْlakumfor you
19. عِندَʿindawith
20. بَارِئِكُمْbāri-ikumyour Creator
21. فَتَابَfatābaThen He turned
22. عَلَيْكُمْ ۚʿalaykumtowards you
23. إِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed He
24. هُوَhuwaHe
25. ٱلتَّوَّابُl-tawābu(is) the-returning
26. ٱلرَّحِيمُl-raḥīmuthe Most Merciful

وَإِذْ قُلْتُمْ يَـٰمُوسَىٰ لَن نُّؤْمِنَ لَكَ حَتَّىٰ نَرَى ٱللَّهَ جَهْرَةً فَأَخَذَتْكُمُ ٱلصَّـٰعِقَةُ وَأَنتُمْ تَنظُرُونَ

Transliteration wa-idh qul'tum yāmūsā lan nu'mina laka ḥattā narā l-laha jahratan fa-akhadhatkumu l-ṣāʿiqatu wa-antum tanẓurūna

English And [recall] when you said, "O Moses, we will never believe you until we see Allāh outright"; so the thunderbolt took you while you were looking on.

1. وَإِذْwa-idhAnd when
2. قُلْتُمْqul'tumyou said
3. يَـٰمُوسَىٰyāmūsāO Musa
4. لَنlanNever
5. نُّؤْمِنَnu'mina(will) we believe
6. لَكَlakain you
7. حَتَّىٰḥattāuntil
8. نَرَىnarāwe see
9. ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
10. جَهْرَةًۭjahratanmanifestly
11. فَأَخَذَتْكُمُfa-akhadhatkumuSo seized you
12. ٱلصَّـٰعِقَةُl-ṣāʿiqatuthe thunderbolt
13. وَأَنتُمْwa-antumwhile you
14. تَنظُرُونَtanẓurūna(were) looking

ثُمَّ بَعَثْنَـٰكُم مِّنۢ بَعْدِ مَوْتِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ

Transliteration thumma baʿathnākum min baʿdi mawtikum laʿallakum tashkurūna

English Then We revived you after your death that perhaps you would be grateful.

1. ثُمَّthummaThen
2. بَعَثْنَـٰكُمbaʿathnākumWe revived you
3. مِّنۢminfrom
4. بَعْدِbaʿdiafter
5. مَوْتِكُمْmawtikumyour death
6. لَعَلَّكُمْlaʿallakumso that you may
7. تَشْكُرُونَtashkurūna(be) grateful

وَظَلَّلْنَا عَلَيْكُمُ ٱلْغَمَامَ وَأَنزَلْنَا عَلَيْكُمُ ٱلْمَنَّ وَٱلسَّلْوَىٰ ۖ كُلُوا۟ مِن طَيِّبَـٰتِ مَا رَزَقْنَـٰكُمْ ۖ وَمَا ظَلَمُونَا وَلَـٰكِن كَانُوٓا۟ أَنفُسَهُمْ يَظْلِمُونَ

Transliteration waẓallalnā ʿalaykumu l-ghamāma wa-anzalnā ʿalaykumu l-mana wal-salwā kulū min ṭayyibāti mā razaqnākum wamā ẓalamūnā walākin kānū anfusahum yaẓlimūna

English And We shaded you with clouds and sent down to you manna and quails, [saying], "Eat from the good things with which We have provided you." And they wronged Us not - but they were [only] wronging themselves.

1. وَظَلَّلْنَاwaẓallalnāAnd We shaded
2. عَلَيْكُمُʿalaykumu[over] you
3. ٱلْغَمَامَl-ghamāma(with) [the] clouds
4. وَأَنزَلْنَاwa-anzalnāand We sent down
5. عَلَيْكُمُʿalaykumuto you
6. ٱلْمَنَّl-mana[the] manna
7. وَٱلسَّلْوَىٰ ۖwal-salwāand [the] quails
8. كُلُوا۟kulūEat
9. مِنminfrom
10. طَيِّبَـٰتِṭayyibāti(the) good things
11. مَاmāthat
12. رَزَقْنَـٰكُمْ ۖrazaqnākumWe have provided you
13. وَمَاwamāAnd not
14. ظَلَمُونَاẓalamūnāthey wronged Us
15. وَلَـٰكِنwalākinbut
16. كَانُوٓا۟kānūthey were
17. أَنفُسَهُمْanfusahum(to) themselves
18. يَظْلِمُونَyaẓlimūnadoing wrong

وَإِذْ قُلْنَا ٱدْخُلُوا۟ هَـٰذِهِ ٱلْقَرْيَةَ فَكُلُوا۟ مِنْهَا حَيْثُ شِئْتُمْ رَغَدًا وَٱدْخُلُوا۟ ٱلْبَابَ سُجَّدًا وَقُولُوا۟ حِطَّةٌ نَّغْفِرْ لَكُمْ خَطَـٰيَـٰكُمْ ۚ وَسَنَزِيدُ ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ

Transliteration wa-idh qul'nā ud'khulū hādhihi l-qaryata fakulū min'hā ḥaythu shi'tum raghadan wa-ud'khulū l-bāba sujjadan waqūlū ḥiṭṭatun naghfir lakum khaṭāyākum wasanazīdu l-muḥ'sinīna

English And [recall] when We said, "Enter this city [i.e., Jerusalem] and eat from it wherever you will in [ease and] abundance, and enter the gate bowing humbly and say, 'Relieve us of our burdens [i.e., sins].' We will [then] forgive your sins for you, and We will increase the doers of good [in goodness and reward]."

1. وَإِذْwa-idhAnd when
2. قُلْنَاqul'nāWe said
3. ٱدْخُلُوا۟ud'khulūEnter
4. هَـٰذِهِhādhihithis
5. ٱلْقَرْيَةَl-qaryatatown
6. فَكُلُوا۟fakulūthen eat
7. مِنْهَاmin'hāfrom
8. حَيْثُḥaythuwherever
9. شِئْتُمْshi'tumyou wish[ed]
10. رَغَدًۭاraghadanabundantly
11. وَٱدْخُلُوا۟wa-ud'khulūand enter
12. ٱلْبَابَl-bābathe gate
13. سُجَّدًۭاsujjadanprostrating
14. وَقُولُوا۟waqūlūAnd say
15. حِطَّةٌۭḥiṭṭatunRepentance
16. نَّغْفِرْnaghfirWe will forgive
17. لَكُمْlakumfor you
18. خَطَـٰيَـٰكُمْ ۚkhaṭāyākumyour sins
19. وَسَنَزِيدُwasanazīduAnd We will increase
20. ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَl-muḥ'sinīnathe good-doers (in reward)

فَبَدَّلَ ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا۟ قَوْلًا غَيْرَ ٱلَّذِى قِيلَ لَهُمْ فَأَنزَلْنَا عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا۟ رِجْزًا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَفْسُقُونَ

Transliteration fabaddala alladhīna ẓalamū qawlan ghayra alladhī qīla lahum fa-anzalnā ʿalā alladhīna ẓalamū rij'zan mina l-samāi bimā kānū yafsuqūna

English But those who wronged changed [those words] to a statement other than that which had been said to them, so We sent down upon those who wronged a punishment [i.e., plague] from the sky because they were defiantly disobeying.

1. فَبَدَّلَfabaddalaBut changed
2. ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
3. ظَلَمُوا۟ẓalamūwronged
4. قَوْلًاqawlan(the) word
5. غَيْرَghayraother (than)
6. ٱلَّذِىalladhī(that) which
7. قِيلَqīlawas said
8. لَهُمْlahumto them
9. فَأَنزَلْنَاfa-anzalnāso We sent down
10. عَلَىʿalāupon
11. ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
12. ظَلَمُوا۟ẓalamūwronged
13. رِجْزًۭاrij'zana punishment
14. مِّنَminafrom
15. ٱلسَّمَآءِl-samāithe sky
16. بِمَاbimābecause
17. كَانُوا۟kānūthey were
18. يَفْسُقُونَyafsuqūnadefiantly disobeying

۞ وَإِذِ ٱسْتَسْقَىٰ مُوسَىٰ لِقَوْمِهِۦ فَقُلْنَا ٱضْرِب بِّعَصَاكَ ٱلْحَجَرَ ۖ فَٱنفَجَرَتْ مِنْهُ ٱثْنَتَا عَشْرَةَ عَيْنًا ۖ قَدْ عَلِمَ كُلُّ أُنَاسٍ مَّشْرَبَهُمْ ۖ كُلُوا۟ وَٱشْرَبُوا۟ مِن رِّزْقِ ٱللَّهِ وَلَا تَعْثَوْا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ مُفْسِدِينَ

Transliteration wa-idhi is'tasqā mūsā liqawmihi faqul'nā iḍ'rib biʿaṣāka l-ḥajara fa-infajarat min'hu ith'natā ʿashrata ʿaynan qad ʿalima kullu unāsin mashrabahum kulū wa-ish'rabū min riz'qi l-lahi walā taʿthaw fī l-arḍi muf'sidīna

English And [recall] when Moses prayed for water for his people, so We said, "Strike with your staff the stone." And there gushed forth from it twelve springs, and every people [i.e., tribe] knew its watering place. "Eat and drink from the provision of Allāh, and do not commit abuse on the earth, spreading corruption."

1. ۞ وَإِذِwa-idhiAnd when
2. ٱسْتَسْقَىٰis'tasqāasked (for) water
3. مُوسَىٰmūsāMusa
4. لِقَوْمِهِۦliqawmihifor his people
5. فَقُلْنَاfaqul'nā[so] We said
6. ٱضْرِبiḍ'ribStrike
7. بِّعَصَاكَbiʿaṣākawith your staff
8. ٱلْحَجَرَ ۖl-ḥajarathe stone
9. فَٱنفَجَرَتْfa-infajaratThen gushed forth
10. مِنْهُmin'hufrom it
11. ٱثْنَتَاith'natā(of)
12. عَشْرَةَʿashratatwelve
13. عَيْنًۭا ۖʿaynansprings
14. قَدْqadIndeed
15. عَلِمَʿalimaknew
16. كُلُّkulluall
17. أُنَاسٍۢunāsin(the) people
18. مَّشْرَبَهُمْ ۖmashrabahumtheir drinking place
19. كُلُوا۟kulūEat
20. وَٱشْرَبُوا۟wa-ish'rabūand drink
21. مِنminfrom
22. رِّزْقِriz'qi(the) provision (of)
23. ٱللَّهِl-lahiAllah
24. وَلَاwalāand (do) not
25. تَعْثَوْا۟taʿthawact wickedly
26. فِىfīin
27. ٱلْأَرْضِl-arḍithe earth
28. مُفْسِدِينَmuf'sidīnaspreading corruption

وَإِذْ قُلْتُمْ يَـٰمُوسَىٰ لَن نَّصْبِرَ عَلَىٰ طَعَامٍ وَٰحِدٍ فَٱدْعُ لَنَا رَبَّكَ يُخْرِجْ لَنَا مِمَّا تُنۢبِتُ ٱلْأَرْضُ مِنۢ بَقْلِهَا وَقِثَّآئِهَا وَفُومِهَا وَعَدَسِهَا وَبَصَلِهَا ۖ قَالَ أَتَسْتَبْدِلُونَ ٱلَّذِى هُوَ أَدْنَىٰ بِٱلَّذِى هُوَ خَيْرٌ ۚ ٱهْبِطُوا۟ مِصْرًا فَإِنَّ لَكُم مَّا سَأَلْتُمْ ۗ وَضُرِبَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلذِّلَّةُ وَٱلْمَسْكَنَةُ وَبَآءُو بِغَضَبٍ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ ۗ ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ يَكْفُرُونَ بِـَٔايَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ وَيَقْتُلُونَ ٱلنَّبِيِّـۧنَ بِغَيْرِ ٱلْحَقِّ ۗ ذَٰلِكَ بِمَا عَصَوا۟ وَّكَانُوا۟ يَعْتَدُونَ

Transliteration wa-idh qul'tum yāmūsā lan naṣbira ʿalā ṭaʿāmin wāḥidin fa-ud'ʿu lanā rabbaka yukh'rij lanā mimmā tunbitu l-arḍu min baqlihā waqithāihā wafūmihā waʿadasihā wabaṣalihā qāla atastabdilūna alladhī huwa adnā bi-alladhī huwa khayrun ih'biṭū miṣ'ran fa-inna lakum mā sa-altum waḍuribat ʿalayhimu l-dhilatu wal-maskanatu wabāū bighaḍabin mina l-lahi dhālika bi-annahum kānū yakfurūna biāyāti l-lahi wayaqtulūna l-nabiyīna bighayri l-ḥaqi dhālika bimā ʿaṣaw wakānū yaʿtadūna

English And [recall] when you said, "O Moses, we can never endure one [kind of] food. So call upon your Lord to bring forth for us from the earth its green herbs and its cucumbers and its garlic and its lentils and its onions." [Moses] said, "Would you exchange what is better for what is less? Go into [any] settlement and indeed, you will have what you have asked." And they were covered with humiliation and poverty and returned with anger from Allāh [upon them]. That was because they [repeatedly] disbelieved in the signs of Allāh and killed the prophets without right. That was because they disobeyed and were [habitually] transgressing.

1. وَإِذْwa-idhAnd when
2. قُلْتُمْqul'tumyou said
3. يَـٰمُوسَىٰyāmūsāO Musa
4. لَنlanNever (will)
5. نَّصْبِرَnaṣbirawe endure
6. عَلَىٰʿalā[on]
7. طَعَامٍۢṭaʿāminfood
8. وَٰحِدٍۢwāḥidin(of) one (kind)
9. فَٱدْعُfa-ud'ʿuso pray
10. لَنَاlanāfor us
11. رَبَّكَrabbaka(to) your Lord
12. يُخْرِجْyukh'rijto bring forth
13. لَنَاlanāfor us
14. مِمَّاmimmāout of what
15. تُنۢبِتُtunbitugrows
16. ٱلْأَرْضُl-arḍuthe earth
17. مِنۢminof
18. بَقْلِهَاbaqlihāits herbs
19. وَقِثَّآئِهَاwaqithāihā[and] its cucumbers
20. وَفُومِهَاwafūmihā[and] its garlic
21. وَعَدَسِهَاwaʿadasihā[and] its lentils
22. وَبَصَلِهَا ۖwabaṣalihāand its onions
23. قَالَqālaHe said
24. أَتَسْتَبْدِلُونَatastabdilūnaWould you exchange
25. ٱلَّذِىalladhīthat which
26. هُوَhuwa[it]
27. أَدْنَىٰadnā(is) inferior
28. بِٱلَّذِىbi-alladhīfor that which
29. هُوَhuwa[it]
30. خَيْرٌ ۚkhayrun(is) better
31. ٱهْبِطُوا۟ih'biṭūGo down
32. مِصْرًۭاmiṣ'ran(to) a city
33. فَإِنَّfa-innaso indeed
34. لَكُمlakumfor you
35. مَّاmā(is) what
36. سَأَلْتُمْ ۗsa-altumyou have asked (for)
37. وَضُرِبَتْwaḍuribatAnd were struck
38. عَلَيْهِمُʿalayhimuon them
39. ٱلذِّلَّةُl-dhilatuthe humiliation
40. وَٱلْمَسْكَنَةُwal-maskanatuand the misery
41. وَبَآءُوwabāūand they drew on themselves
42. بِغَضَبٍۢbighaḍabinwrath
43. مِّنَminaof
44. ٱللَّهِ ۗl-lahiAllah
45. ذَٰلِكَdhālikaThat (was)
46. بِأَنَّهُمْbi-annahumbecause they
47. كَانُوا۟kānūused to
48. يَكْفُرُونَyakfurūnadisbelieve
49. بِـَٔايَـٰتِbiāyātiin (the) Signs
50. ٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allah
51. وَيَقْتُلُونَwayaqtulūnaand kill
52. ٱلنَّبِيِّـۧنَl-nabiyīnathe Prophets
53. بِغَيْرِbighayriwithout (any)
54. ٱلْحَقِّ ۗl-ḥaqi[the] right
55. ذَٰلِكَdhālikaThat
56. بِمَاbimā(was) because
57. عَصَوا۟ʿaṣawthey disobeyed
58. وَّكَانُوا۟wakānūand they were
59. يَعْتَدُونَyaʿtadūnatransgressing

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَٱلَّذِينَ هَادُوا۟ وَٱلنَّصَـٰرَىٰ وَٱلصَّـٰبِـِٔينَ مَنْ ءَامَنَ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ وَعَمِلَ صَـٰلِحًا فَلَهُمْ أَجْرُهُمْ عِندَ رَبِّهِمْ وَلَا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ

Transliteration inna alladhīna āmanū wa-alladhīna hādū wal-naṣārā wal-ṣābiīna man āmana bil-lahi wal-yawmi l-ākhiri waʿamila ṣāliḥan falahum ajruhum ʿinda rabbihim walā khawfun ʿalayhim walā hum yaḥzanūna

English Indeed, those who believed and those who were Jews or Christians or Sabeans [before Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ)] - those [among them] who believed in Allāh and the Last Day and did righteousness - will have their reward with their Lord, and no fear will there be concerning them, nor will they grieve.

1. إِنَّinnaIndeed
2. ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
3. ءَامَنُوا۟āmanūbelieved
4. وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaand those who
5. هَادُوا۟hādūbecame Jews
6. وَٱلنَّصَـٰرَىٰwal-naṣārāand the Christians
7. وَٱلصَّـٰبِـِٔينَwal-ṣābiīnaand the Sabians
8. مَنْmanwho
9. ءَامَنَāmanabelieved
10. بِٱللَّهِbil-lahiin Allah
11. وَٱلْيَوْمِwal-yawmiand the Day
12. ٱلْـَٔاخِرِl-ākhiri[the] Last
13. وَعَمِلَwaʿamilaand did
14. صَـٰلِحًۭاṣāliḥanrighteous deeds
15. فَلَهُمْfalahumso for them
16. أَجْرُهُمْajruhumtheir reward
17. عِندَʿinda(is) with
18. رَبِّهِمْrabbihimtheir Lord
19. وَلَاwalāand no
20. خَوْفٌkhawfunfear
21. عَلَيْهِمْʿalayhimon them
22. وَلَاwalāand not
23. هُمْhumthey
24. يَحْزَنُونَyaḥzanūnawill grieve

وَإِذْ أَخَذْنَا مِيثَـٰقَكُمْ وَرَفَعْنَا فَوْقَكُمُ ٱلطُّورَ خُذُوا۟ مَآ ءَاتَيْنَـٰكُم بِقُوَّةٍ وَٱذْكُرُوا۟ مَا فِيهِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ

Transliteration wa-idh akhadhnā mīthāqakum warafaʿnā fawqakumu l-ṭūra khudhū mā ātaynākum biquwwatin wa-udh'kurū mā fīhi laʿallakum tattaqūna

English And [recall] when We took your covenant, [O Children of Israel, to abide by the Torah] and We raised over you the mount, [saying], "Take what We have given you with determination and remember what is in it that perhaps you may become righteous."

1. وَإِذْwa-idhAnd when
2. أَخَذْنَاakhadhnāWe took
3. مِيثَـٰقَكُمْmīthāqakumyour covenant
4. وَرَفَعْنَاwarafaʿnāand We raised
5. فَوْقَكُمُfawqakumuover you
6. ٱلطُّورَl-ṭūrathe mount
7. خُذُوا۟khudhūHold
8. مَآmāwhat
9. ءَاتَيْنَـٰكُمātaynākumWe have given you
10. بِقُوَّةٍۢbiquwwatinwith strength
11. وَٱذْكُرُوا۟wa-udh'kurūand remember
12. مَاmāwhat
13. فِيهِfīhi(is) in it
14. لَعَلَّكُمْlaʿallakumperhaps you
15. تَتَّقُونَtattaqūna(would become) righteous

ثُمَّ تَوَلَّيْتُم مِّنۢ بَعْدِ ذَٰلِكَ ۖ فَلَوْلَا فَضْلُ ٱللَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَتُهُۥ لَكُنتُم مِّنَ ٱلْخَـٰسِرِينَ

Transliteration thumma tawallaytum min baʿdi dhālika falawlā faḍlu l-lahi ʿalaykum waraḥmatuhu lakuntum mina l-khāsirīna

English Then you turned away after that. And if not for the favor of Allāh upon you and His mercy, you would have been among the losers.

1. ثُمَّthummaThen
2. تَوَلَّيْتُمtawallaytumyou turned away
3. مِّنۢminfrom
4. بَعْدِbaʿdiafter
5. ذَٰلِكَ ۖdhālikathat
6. فَلَوْلَاfalawlāSo if not
7. فَضْلُfaḍlu(for the) Grace
8. ٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allah
9. عَلَيْكُمْʿalaykumupon you
10. وَرَحْمَتُهُۥwaraḥmatuhuand His Mercy
11. لَكُنتُمlakuntumsurely you would have been
12. مِّنَminaof
13. ٱلْخَـٰسِرِينَl-khāsirīnathe losers

وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْتُمُ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱعْتَدَوْا۟ مِنكُمْ فِى ٱلسَّبْتِ فَقُلْنَا لَهُمْ كُونُوا۟ قِرَدَةً خَـٰسِـِٔينَ

Transliteration walaqad ʿalim'tumu alladhīna iʿ'tadaw minkum fī l-sabti faqul'nā lahum kūnū qiradatan khāsiīna

English And you had already known about those who transgressed among you concerning the sabbath, and We said to them, "Be apes, despised."

1. وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd indeed
2. عَلِمْتُمُʿalim'tumuyou knew
3. ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
4. ٱعْتَدَوْا۟iʿ'tadawtransgressed
5. مِنكُمْminkumamong you
6. فِىfīin
7. ٱلسَّبْتِl-sabtithe (matter of) Sabbath
8. فَقُلْنَاfaqul'nāSo We said
9. لَهُمْlahumto them
10. كُونُوا۟kūnūBe
11. قِرَدَةًqiradatanapes
12. خَـٰسِـِٔينَkhāsiīnadespised

فَجَعَلْنَـٰهَا نَكَـٰلًا لِّمَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهَا وَمَا خَلْفَهَا وَمَوْعِظَةً لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ

Transliteration fajaʿalnāhā nakālan limā bayna yadayhā wamā khalfahā wamawʿiẓatan lil'muttaqīna

English And We made it a deterrent punishment for those who were present and those who succeeded [them] and a lesson for those who fear Allāh.

1. فَجَعَلْنَـٰهَاfajaʿalnāhāSo We made it
2. نَكَـٰلًۭاnakālana deterrent punishment
3. لِّمَاlimāfor those
4. بَيْنَbayna(in) front
5. يَدَيْهَاyadayhā(of) them
6. وَمَاwamāand those
7. خَلْفَهَاkhalfahāafter them
8. وَمَوْعِظَةًۭwamawʿiẓatanand an admonition
9. لِّلْمُتَّقِينَlil'muttaqīnafor those who fear (Allah)

وَإِذْ قَالَ مُوسَىٰ لِقَوْمِهِۦٓ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَأْمُرُكُمْ أَن تَذْبَحُوا۟ بَقَرَةً ۖ قَالُوٓا۟ أَتَتَّخِذُنَا هُزُوًا ۖ قَالَ أَعُوذُ بِٱللَّهِ أَنْ أَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلْجَـٰهِلِينَ

Transliteration wa-idh qāla mūsā liqawmihi inna l-laha yamurukum an tadhbaḥū baqaratan qālū atattakhidhunā huzuwan qāla aʿūdhu bil-lahi an akūna mina l-jāhilīna

English And [recall] when Moses said to his people, "Indeed, Allāh commands you to slaughter a cow." They said, "Do you take us in ridicule?" He said, "I seek refuge in Allāh from being among the ignorant."

1. وَإِذْwa-idhAnd when
2. قَالَqālasaid
3. مُوسَىٰmūsāMusa
4. لِقَوْمِهِۦٓliqawmihito his people
5. إِنَّinnaIndeed
6. ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
7. يَأْمُرُكُمْyamurukumcommands you
8. أَنanthat
9. تَذْبَحُوا۟tadhbaḥūyou slaughter
10. بَقَرَةًۭ ۖbaqaratana cow
11. قَالُوٓا۟qālūThey said
12. أَتَتَّخِذُنَاatattakhidhunāDo you take us
13. هُزُوًۭا ۖhuzuwan(in) ridicule
14. قَالَqālaHe said
15. أَعُوذُaʿūdhuI seek refuge
16. بِٱللَّهِbil-lahiin Allah
17. أَنْanthat
18. أَكُونَakūnaI be
19. مِنَminaamong
20. ٱلْجَـٰهِلِينَl-jāhilīnathe ignorant

قَالُوا۟ ٱدْعُ لَنَا رَبَّكَ يُبَيِّن لَّنَا مَا هِىَ ۚ قَالَ إِنَّهُۥ يَقُولُ إِنَّهَا بَقَرَةٌ لَّا فَارِضٌ وَلَا بِكْرٌ عَوَانٌۢ بَيْنَ ذَٰلِكَ ۖ فَٱفْعَلُوا۟ مَا تُؤْمَرُونَ

Transliteration qālū ud'ʿu lanā rabbaka yubayyin lanā mā hiya qāla innahu yaqūlu innahā baqaratun lā fāriḍun walā bik'run ʿawānun bayna dhālika fa-if'ʿalū mā tu'marūna

English They said, "Call upon your Lord to make clear to us what it is." [Moses] said, "[Allāh] says, 'It is a cow which is neither old nor virgin, but median between that,' so do what you are commanded."

1. قَالُوا۟qālūThey said
2. ٱدْعُud'ʿuPray
3. لَنَاlanāfor us
4. رَبَّكَrabbaka(to) your Lord
5. يُبَيِّنyubayyinto make clear
6. لَّنَاlanāto us
7. مَاmāwhat
8. هِىَ ۚhiyait (is)
9. قَالَqālaHe said
10. إِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, He
11. يَقُولُyaqūlusays
12. إِنَّهَاinnahā[Indeed] it
13. بَقَرَةٌۭbaqaratun(is) a cow
14. لَّاlānot
15. فَارِضٌۭfāriḍunold
16. وَلَاwalāand not
17. بِكْرٌbik'runyoung
18. عَوَانٌۢʿawānunmiddle aged
19. بَيْنَbaynabetween
20. ذَٰلِكَ ۖdhālikathat
21. فَٱفْعَلُوا۟fa-if'ʿalūso do
22. مَاmāwhat
23. تُؤْمَرُونَtu'marūnayou are commanded

قَالُوا۟ ٱدْعُ لَنَا رَبَّكَ يُبَيِّن لَّنَا مَا لَوْنُهَا ۚ قَالَ إِنَّهُۥ يَقُولُ إِنَّهَا بَقَرَةٌ صَفْرَآءُ فَاقِعٌ لَّوْنُهَا تَسُرُّ ٱلنَّـٰظِرِينَ

Transliteration qālū ud'ʿu lanā rabbaka yubayyin lanā mā lawnuhā qāla innahu yaqūlu innahā baqaratun ṣafrāu fāqiʿun lawnuhā tasurru l-nāẓirīna

English They said, "Call upon your Lord to show us what is her color." He said, "He says, 'It is a yellow cow, bright in color - pleasing to the observers.'"

1. قَالُوا۟qālūThey said
2. ٱدْعُud'ʿuPray
3. لَنَاlanāfor us
4. رَبَّكَrabbaka(to) your Lord
5. يُبَيِّنyubayyinto make clear
6. لَّنَاlanāto us
7. مَاmāwhat
8. لَوْنُهَا ۚlawnuhā(is) its color
9. قَالَqālaHe said
10. إِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, He
11. يَقُولُyaqūlusays
12. إِنَّهَاinnahā'[Indeed] it is
13. بَقَرَةٌۭbaqaratuna cow
14. صَفْرَآءُṣafrāuyellow
15. فَاقِعٌۭfāqiʿunbright
16. لَّوْنُهَاlawnuhā(in) its color
17. تَسُرُّtasurrupleasing
18. ٱلنَّـٰظِرِينَl-nāẓirīna(to) those who see (it).'

قَالُوا۟ ٱدْعُ لَنَا رَبَّكَ يُبَيِّن لَّنَا مَا هِىَ إِنَّ ٱلْبَقَرَ تَشَـٰبَهَ عَلَيْنَا وَإِنَّآ إِن شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ لَمُهْتَدُونَ

Transliteration qālū ud'ʿu lanā rabbaka yubayyin lanā mā hiya inna l-baqara tashābaha ʿalaynā wa-innā in shāa l-lahu lamuh'tadūna

English They said, "Call upon your Lord to make clear to us what it is. Indeed, [all] cows look alike to us. And indeed we, if Allāh wills, will be guided."

1. قَالُوا۟qālūThey said
2. ٱدْعُud'ʿuPray
3. لَنَاlanāfor us
4. رَبَّكَrabbaka(to) your Lord
5. يُبَيِّنyubayyinto make clear
6. لَّنَاlanāto us
7. مَاmāwhat
8. هِىَhiyait (is)
9. إِنَّinnaIndeed
10. ٱلْبَقَرَl-baqara[the] cows
11. تَشَـٰبَهَtashābahalook alike
12. عَلَيْنَاʿalaynāto us
13. وَإِنَّآwa-innāAnd indeed we
14. إِنinif
15. شَآءَshāawills
16. ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
17. لَمُهْتَدُونَlamuh'tadūna(will) surely be those who are guided

قَالَ إِنَّهُۥ يَقُولُ إِنَّهَا بَقَرَةٌ لَّا ذَلُولٌ تُثِيرُ ٱلْأَرْضَ وَلَا تَسْقِى ٱلْحَرْثَ مُسَلَّمَةٌ لَّا شِيَةَ فِيهَا ۚ قَالُوا۟ ٱلْـَٔـٰنَ جِئْتَ بِٱلْحَقِّ ۚ فَذَبَحُوهَا وَمَا كَادُوا۟ يَفْعَلُونَ

Transliteration qāla innahu yaqūlu innahā baqaratun lā dhalūlun tuthīru l-arḍa walā tasqī l-ḥartha musallamatun lā shiyata fīhā qālū l-āna ji'ta bil-ḥaqi fadhabaḥūhā wamā kādū yafʿalūna

English He said, "He says, 'It is a cow neither trained to plow the earth nor to irrigate the field, one free from fault with no spot upon her.'" They said, "Now you have come with the truth." So they slaughtered her, but they could hardly do it.

1. قَالَqālaHe said
2. إِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, He
3. يَقُولُyaqūlusays
4. إِنَّهَاinnahā[Indeed] it
5. بَقَرَةٌۭbaqaratun(is) a cow
6. لَّاlānot
7. ذَلُولٌۭdhalūluntrained
8. تُثِيرُtuthīruto plough
9. ٱلْأَرْضَl-arḍathe earth
10. وَلَاwalāand not
11. تَسْقِىtasqīwater
12. ٱلْحَرْثَl-ḥarthathe field
13. مُسَلَّمَةٌۭmusallamatunsound
14. لَّاlāno
15. شِيَةَshiyatablemish
16. فِيهَا ۚfīhāin it
17. قَالُوا۟qālūThey said
18. ٱلْـَٔـٰنَl-ānaNow
19. جِئْتَji'tayou have come
20. بِٱلْحَقِّ ۚbil-ḥaqiwith the truth
21. فَذَبَحُوهَاfadhabaḥūhāSo they slaughtered it
22. وَمَاwamāand not
23. كَادُوا۟kādūthey were near
24. يَفْعَلُونَyafʿalūna(to) doing (it)

وَإِذْ قَتَلْتُمْ نَفْسًا فَٱدَّٰرَْٰٔتُمْ فِيهَا ۖ وَٱللَّهُ مُخْرِجٌ مَّا كُنتُمْ تَكْتُمُونَ

Transliteration wa-idh qataltum nafsan fa-iddāratum fīhā wal-lahu mukh'rijun mā kuntum taktumūna

English And [recall] when you slew a man and disputed over it, but Allāh was to bring out that which you were concealing.

1. وَإِذْwa-idhAnd when
2. قَتَلْتُمْqataltumyou killed
3. نَفْسًۭاnafsana man
4. فَٱدَّٰرَْٰٔتُمْfa-iddāratumthen you disputed
5. فِيهَا ۖfīhāconcerning it
6. وَٱللَّهُwal-lahubut Allah
7. مُخْرِجٌۭmukh'rijun(is) the One Who brought forth
8. مَّاmāwhat
9. كُنتُمْkuntumyou were
10. تَكْتُمُونَtaktumūnaconcealing

فَقُلْنَا ٱضْرِبُوهُ بِبَعْضِهَا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُحْىِ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْمَوْتَىٰ وَيُرِيكُمْ ءَايَـٰتِهِۦ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ

Transliteration faqul'nā iḍ'ribūhu bibaʿḍihā kadhālika yuḥ'yī l-lahu l-mawtā wayurīkum āyātihi laʿallakum taʿqilūna

English So We said, "Strike him [i.e., the slain man] with part of it." Thus does Allāh bring the dead to life, and He shows you His signs that you might reason.

1. فَقُلْنَاfaqul'nāSo We said
2. ٱضْرِبُوهُiḍ'ribūhuStrike him
3. بِبَعْضِهَا ۚbibaʿḍihāwith a part of it
4. كَذَٰلِكَkadhālikaLike this
5. يُحْىِyuḥ'yīrevives
6. ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
7. ٱلْمَوْتَىٰl-mawtāthe dead
8. وَيُرِيكُمْwayurīkumand shows you
9. ءَايَـٰتِهِۦāyātihiHis Signs
10. لَعَلَّكُمْlaʿallakumperhaps you may
11. تَعْقِلُونَtaʿqilūnause your intellect

ثُمَّ قَسَتْ قُلُوبُكُم مِّنۢ بَعْدِ ذَٰلِكَ فَهِىَ كَٱلْحِجَارَةِ أَوْ أَشَدُّ قَسْوَةً ۚ وَإِنَّ مِنَ ٱلْحِجَارَةِ لَمَا يَتَفَجَّرُ مِنْهُ ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ ۚ وَإِنَّ مِنْهَا لَمَا يَشَّقَّقُ فَيَخْرُجُ مِنْهُ ٱلْمَآءُ ۚ وَإِنَّ مِنْهَا لَمَا يَهْبِطُ مِنْ خَشْيَةِ ٱللَّهِ ۗ وَمَا ٱللَّهُ بِغَـٰفِلٍ عَمَّا تَعْمَلُونَ

Transliteration thumma qasat qulūbukum min baʿdi dhālika fahiya kal-ḥijārati aw ashaddu qaswatan wa-inna mina l-ḥijārati lamā yatafajjaru min'hu l-anhāru wa-inna min'hā lamā yashaqqaqu fayakhruju min'hu l-māu wa-inna min'hā lamā yahbiṭu min khashyati l-lahi wamā l-lahu bighāfilin ʿammā taʿmalūna

English Then your hearts became hardened after that, being like stones or even harder. For indeed, there are stones from which rivers burst forth, and there are some of them that split open and water comes out, and there are some of them that fall down for fear of Allāh. And Allāh is not unaware of what you do.

1. ثُمَّthummaThen
2. قَسَتْqasathardened
3. قُلُوبُكُمqulūbukumyour hearts
4. مِّنۢminfrom
5. بَعْدِbaʿdiafter
6. ذَٰلِكَdhālikathat
7. فَهِىَfahiyaso they
8. كَٱلْحِجَارَةِkal-ḥijārati(became) like [the] stones
9. أَوْawor
10. أَشَدُّashaddustronger
11. قَسْوَةًۭ ۚqaswatan(in) hardness
12. وَإِنَّwa-innaAnd indeed
13. مِنَminafrom
14. ٱلْحِجَارَةِl-ḥijāratithe stones
15. لَمَاlamācertainly (there are some) which
16. يَتَفَجَّرُyatafajjarugush forth
17. مِنْهُmin'hufrom it
18. ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ ۚl-anhāru[the] rivers
19. وَإِنَّwa-innaand indeed
20. مِنْهَاmin'hāfrom them
21. لَمَاlamācertainly (there are some) which
22. يَشَّقَّقُyashaqqaqusplit
23. فَيَخْرُجُfayakhrujuso comes out
24. مِنْهُmin'hufrom it
25. ٱلْمَآءُ ۚl-māu[the] water
26. وَإِنَّwa-innaand indeed
27. مِنْهَاmin'hāfrom them
28. لَمَاlamācertainly (there are some) which
29. يَهْبِطُyahbiṭufall down
30. مِنْminfrom
31. خَشْيَةِkhashyatifear
32. ٱللَّهِ ۗl-lahi(of) Allah
33. وَمَاwamāAnd not
34. ٱللَّهُl-lahu(is) Allah
35. بِغَـٰفِلٍbighāfilinunaware
36. عَمَّاʿammāof what
37. تَعْمَلُونَtaʿmalūnayou do

۞ أَفَتَطْمَعُونَ أَن يُؤْمِنُوا۟ لَكُمْ وَقَدْ كَانَ فَرِيقٌ مِّنْهُمْ يَسْمَعُونَ كَلَـٰمَ ٱللَّهِ ثُمَّ يُحَرِّفُونَهُۥ مِنۢ بَعْدِ مَا عَقَلُوهُ وَهُمْ يَعْلَمُونَ

Transliteration afataṭmaʿūna an yu'minū lakum waqad kāna farīqun min'hum yasmaʿūna kalāma l-lahi thumma yuḥarrifūnahu min baʿdi mā ʿaqalūhu wahum yaʿlamūna

English Do you covet [the hope, O believers], that they would believe for you while a party of them used to hear the words of Allāh and then distort it [i.e., the Torah] after they had understood it while they were knowing?

1. ۞ أَفَتَطْمَعُونَafataṭmaʿūnaDo you hope
2. أَنanthat
3. يُؤْمِنُوا۟yu'minūthey will believe
4. لَكُمْlakum[for] you
5. وَقَدْwaqadwhile indeed
6. كَانَkāna(there) has been
7. فَرِيقٌۭfarīquna party
8. مِّنْهُمْmin'humof them
9. يَسْمَعُونَyasmaʿūna(who used to) hear
10. كَلَـٰمَkalāma(the) words
11. ٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allah
12. ثُمَّthummathen
13. يُحَرِّفُونَهُۥyuḥarrifūnahuthey distort it
14. مِنۢminfrom
15. بَعْدِbaʿdiafter
16. مَاmā[what]
17. عَقَلُوهُʿaqalūhuthey understood it
18. وَهُمْwahumwhile they
19. يَعْلَمُونَyaʿlamūnaknow

وَإِذَا لَقُوا۟ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ قَالُوٓا۟ ءَامَنَّا وَإِذَا خَلَا بَعْضُهُمْ إِلَىٰ بَعْضٍ قَالُوٓا۟ أَتُحَدِّثُونَهُم بِمَا فَتَحَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْكُمْ لِيُحَآجُّوكُم بِهِۦ عِندَ رَبِّكُمْ ۚ أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ

Transliteration wa-idhā laqū alladhīna āmanū qālū āmannā wa-idhā khalā baʿḍuhum ilā baʿḍin qālū atuḥaddithūnahum bimā fataḥa l-lahu ʿalaykum liyuḥājjūkum bihi ʿinda rabbikum afalā taʿqilūna

English And when they meet those who believe, they say, "We have believed"; but when they are alone with one another, they say, "Do you talk to them about what Allāh has revealed to you so they can argue with you about it before your Lord?" Then will you not reason?

1. وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd when
2. لَقُوا۟laqūthey meet
3. ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
4. ءَامَنُوا۟āmanūbelieve[d]
5. قَالُوٓا۟qālūthey say
6. ءَامَنَّاāmannāWe have believed
7. وَإِذَاwa-idhāBut when
8. خَلَاkhalāmeet in private
9. بَعْضُهُمْbaʿḍuhumsome of them
10. إِلَىٰilāwith
11. بَعْضٍۢbaʿḍinsome (others)
12. قَالُوٓا۟qālūthey say
13. أَتُحَدِّثُونَهُمatuḥaddithūnahumDo you tell them
14. بِمَاbimāwhat
15. فَتَحَfataḥahas
16. ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
17. عَلَيْكُمْʿalaykumto you
18. لِيُحَآجُّوكُمliyuḥājjūkumso that they argue with you
19. بِهِۦbihitherewith
20. عِندَʿindabefore
21. رَبِّكُمْ ۚrabbikumyour Lord
22. أَفَلَاafalāThen do (you) not
23. تَعْقِلُونَtaʿqilūnaunderstand

أَوَلَا يَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَعْلَمُ مَا يُسِرُّونَ وَمَا يُعْلِنُونَ

Transliteration awalā yaʿlamūna anna l-laha yaʿlamu mā yusirrūna wamā yuʿ'linūna

English But do they not know that Allāh knows what they conceal and what they declare?

1. أَوَلَاawalāDo not
2. يَعْلَمُونَyaʿlamūnathey know
3. أَنَّannathat
4. ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
5. يَعْلَمُyaʿlamuknows
6. مَاmāwhat
7. يُسِرُّونَyusirrūnathey conceal
8. وَمَاwamāand what
9. يُعْلِنُونَyuʿ'linūnathey declare

وَمِنْهُمْ أُمِّيُّونَ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ إِلَّآ أَمَانِىَّ وَإِنْ هُمْ إِلَّا يَظُنُّونَ

Transliteration wamin'hum ummiyyūna lā yaʿlamūna l-kitāba illā amāniyya wa-in hum illā yaẓunnūna

English And among them are unlettered ones who do not know the Scripture except [indulgement in] wishful thinking, but they are only assuming.

1. وَمِنْهُمْwamin'humAnd among them
2. أُمِّيُّونَummiyyūna(are) unlettered ones
3. لَاlā(who) do not
4. يَعْلَمُونَyaʿlamūnaknow
5. ٱلْكِتَـٰبَl-kitābathe book
6. إِلَّآillāexcept
7. أَمَانِىَّamāniyyawishful thinking
8. وَإِنْwa-inand not
9. هُمْhumthey
10. إِلَّاillā(do anything) except
11. يَظُنُّونَyaẓunnūnaguess

فَوَيْلٌ لِّلَّذِينَ يَكْتُبُونَ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ بِأَيْدِيهِمْ ثُمَّ يَقُولُونَ هَـٰذَا مِنْ عِندِ ٱللَّهِ لِيَشْتَرُوا۟ بِهِۦ ثَمَنًا قَلِيلًا ۖ فَوَيْلٌ لَّهُم مِّمَّا كَتَبَتْ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَوَيْلٌ لَّهُم مِّمَّا يَكْسِبُونَ

Transliteration fawaylun lilladhīna yaktubūna l-kitāba bi-aydīhim thumma yaqūlūna hādhā min ʿindi l-lahi liyashtarū bihi thamanan qalīlan fawaylun lahum mimmā katabat aydīhim wawaylun lahum mimmā yaksibūna

English So woe to those who write the "scripture" with their own hands, then say, "This is from Allāh," in order to exchange it for a small price. Woe to them for what their hands have written and woe to them for what they earn.

1. فَوَيْلٌۭfawaylunSo woe
2. لِّلَّذِينَlilladhīnato those who
3. يَكْتُبُونَyaktubūnawrite
4. ٱلْكِتَـٰبَl-kitābathe book
5. بِأَيْدِيهِمْbi-aydīhimwith their (own) hands
6. ثُمَّthummathen
7. يَقُولُونَyaqūlūnathey say
8. هَـٰذَاhādhāThis
9. مِنْmin(is)
10. عِندِʿindifrom
11. ٱللَّهِl-lahiAllah
12. لِيَشْتَرُوا۟liyashtarūto barter
13. بِهِۦbihiwith it
14. ثَمَنًۭاthamanan(for) a price
15. قَلِيلًۭا ۖqalīlanlittle
16. فَوَيْلٌۭfawaylunSo woe
17. لَّهُمlahumto them
18. مِّمَّاmimmāfor what
19. كَتَبَتْkatabathave written
20. أَيْدِيهِمْaydīhimtheir hands
21. وَوَيْلٌۭwawaylunand woe
22. لَّهُمlahumto them
23. مِّمَّاmimmāfor what
24. يَكْسِبُونَyaksibūnathey earn

وَقَالُوا۟ لَن تَمَسَّنَا ٱلنَّارُ إِلَّآ أَيَّامًا مَّعْدُودَةً ۚ قُلْ أَتَّخَذْتُمْ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ عَهْدًا فَلَن يُخْلِفَ ٱللَّهُ عَهْدَهُۥٓ ۖ أَمْ تَقُولُونَ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ

Transliteration waqālū lan tamassanā l-nāru illā ayyāman maʿdūdatan qul attakhadhtum ʿinda l-lahi ʿahdan falan yukh'lifa l-lahu ʿahdahu am taqūlūna ʿalā l-lahi mā lā taʿlamūna

English And they say, "Never will the Fire touch us, except for [a few] numbered days." Say, "Have you taken a covenant with Allāh? For Allāh will never break His covenant. Or do you say about Allāh that which you do not know?"

1. وَقَالُوا۟waqālūAnd they say
2. لَنlanNever
3. تَمَسَّنَاtamassanāwill touch us
4. ٱلنَّارُl-nāruthe Fire
5. إِلَّآillāexcept
6. أَيَّامًۭاayyāman(for) days
7. مَّعْدُودَةًۭ ۚmaʿdūdatannumbered
8. قُلْqulSay
9. أَتَّخَذْتُمْattakhadhtumHave you taken
10. عِندَʿindafrom
11. ٱللَّهِl-lahiAllah
12. عَهْدًۭاʿahdana covenant
13. فَلَنfalanso never
14. يُخْلِفَyukh'lifawill break
15. ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
16. عَهْدَهُۥٓ ۖʿahdahuHis Covenant
17. أَمْamOr
18. تَقُولُونَtaqūlūna(do) you say
19. عَلَىʿalāagainst
20. ٱللَّهِl-lahiAllah
21. مَاmāwhat
22. لَاlānot
23. تَعْلَمُونَtaʿlamūnayou know

بَلَىٰ مَن كَسَبَ سَيِّئَةً وَأَحَـٰطَتْ بِهِۦ خَطِيٓـَٔتُهُۥ فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلنَّارِ ۖ هُمْ فِيهَا خَـٰلِدُونَ

Transliteration balā man kasaba sayyi-atan wa-aḥāṭat bihi khaṭīatuhu fa-ulāika aṣḥābu l-nāri hum fīhā khālidūna

English Yes, [on the contrary], whoever earns evil and his sin has encompassed him - those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally.

1. بَلَىٰbalāYes
2. مَنmanwhoever
3. كَسَبَkasabaearned
4. سَيِّئَةًۭsayyi-atanevil
5. وَأَحَـٰطَتْwa-aḥāṭatand surrounded him
6. بِهِۦbihiwith
7. خَطِيٓـَٔتُهُۥkhaṭīatuhuhis sins
8. فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَfa-ulāika[so] those
9. أَصْحَـٰبُaṣḥābu(are the) companions
10. ٱلنَّارِ ۖl-nāri(of) the Fire
11. هُمْhumthey
12. فِيهَاfīhāin it
13. خَـٰلِدُونَkhālidūna(will) abide forever

وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْجَنَّةِ ۖ هُمْ فِيهَا خَـٰلِدُونَ

Transliteration wa-alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti ulāika aṣḥābu l-janati hum fīhā khālidūna

English But they who believe and do righteous deeds - those are the companions of Paradise; they will abide therein eternally.

1. وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those who
2. ءَامَنُوا۟āmanūbelieved
3. وَعَمِلُوا۟waʿamilūand did
4. ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِl-ṣāliḥātirighteous deeds
5. أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَulāikathose
6. أَصْحَـٰبُaṣḥābu(are the) companions
7. ٱلْجَنَّةِ ۖl-janati(of) Paradise
8. هُمْhumthey
9. فِيهَاfīhāin it
10. خَـٰلِدُونَkhālidūna(will) abide forever

وَإِذْ أَخَذْنَا مِيثَـٰقَ بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ لَا تَعْبُدُونَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهَ وَبِٱلْوَٰلِدَيْنِ إِحْسَانًا وَذِى ٱلْقُرْبَىٰ وَٱلْيَتَـٰمَىٰ وَٱلْمَسَـٰكِينِ وَقُولُوا۟ لِلنَّاسِ حُسْنًا وَأَقِيمُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتُوا۟ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ ثُمَّ تَوَلَّيْتُمْ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا مِّنكُمْ وَأَنتُم مُّعْرِضُونَ

Transliteration wa-idh akhadhnā mīthāqa banī is'rāīla lā taʿbudūna illā l-laha wabil-wālidayni iḥ'sānan wadhī l-qur'bā wal-yatāmā wal-masākīni waqūlū lilnnāsi ḥus'nan wa-aqīmū l-ṣalata waātū l-zakata thumma tawallaytum illā qalīlan minkum wa-antum muʿ'riḍūna

English And [recall] when We took the covenant from the Children of Israel, [enjoining upon them], "Do not worship except Allāh; and to parents do good and to relatives, orphans, and the needy. And speak to people good [words] and establish prayer and give zakāh." Then you turned away, except a few of you, and you were refusing.

1. وَإِذْwa-idhAnd when
2. أَخَذْنَاakhadhnāWe took
3. مِيثَـٰقَmīthāqa(the) covenant
4. بَنِىٓbanī(from the) Children
5. إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَis'rāīla(of) Israel
6. لَاlāNot
7. تَعْبُدُونَtaʿbudūnayou will worship
8. إِلَّاillāexcept
9. ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
10. وَبِٱلْوَٰلِدَيْنِwabil-wālidayniand with [the] parents
11. إِحْسَانًۭاiḥ'sānan(be) good
12. وَذِىwadhīand (with)
13. ٱلْقُرْبَىٰl-qur'bārelatives
14. وَٱلْيَتَـٰمَىٰwal-yatāmāand [the] orphans
15. وَٱلْمَسَـٰكِينِwal-masākīniand the needy
16. وَقُولُوا۟waqūlūand speak
17. لِلنَّاسِlilnnāsito [the] people
18. حُسْنًۭاḥus'nangood
19. وَأَقِيمُوا۟wa-aqīmūand establish
20. ٱلصَّلَوٰةَl-ṣalatathe prayer
21. وَءَاتُوا۟waātūand give
22. ٱلزَّكَوٰةَl-zakatathe zakah
23. ثُمَّthummaThen
24. تَوَلَّيْتُمْtawallaytumyou turned away
25. إِلَّاillāexcept
26. قَلِيلًۭاqalīlana few
27. مِّنكُمْminkumof you
28. وَأَنتُمwa-antumand you (were)
29. مُّعْرِضُونَmuʿ'riḍūnarefusing

وَإِذْ أَخَذْنَا مِيثَـٰقَكُمْ لَا تَسْفِكُونَ دِمَآءَكُمْ وَلَا تُخْرِجُونَ أَنفُسَكُم مِّن دِيَـٰرِكُمْ ثُمَّ أَقْرَرْتُمْ وَأَنتُمْ تَشْهَدُونَ

Transliteration wa-idh akhadhnā mīthāqakum lā tasfikūna dimāakum walā tukh'rijūna anfusakum min diyārikum thumma aqrartum wa-antum tashhadūna

English And [recall] when We took your covenant, [saying], "Do not shed your [i.e., each other's] blood or evict one another from your homes." Then you acknowledged [this] while you were witnessing.

1. وَإِذْwa-idhAnd when
2. أَخَذْنَاakhadhnāWe took
3. مِيثَـٰقَكُمْmīthāqakumyour covenant
4. لَاlāNot
5. تَسْفِكُونَtasfikūnawill you shed
6. دِمَآءَكُمْdimāakumyour blood
7. وَلَاwalāand not
8. تُخْرِجُونَtukh'rijūna(will) evict
9. أَنفُسَكُمanfusakumyourselves
10. مِّنminfrom
11. دِيَـٰرِكُمْdiyārikumyour homes
12. ثُمَّthummathen
13. أَقْرَرْتُمْaqrartumyou ratified
14. وَأَنتُمْwa-antumwhile you
15. تَشْهَدُونَtashhadūna(were) witnessing

ثُمَّ أَنتُمْ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ تَقْتُلُونَ أَنفُسَكُمْ وَتُخْرِجُونَ فَرِيقًا مِّنكُم مِّن دِيَـٰرِهِمْ تَظَـٰهَرُونَ عَلَيْهِم بِٱلْإِثْمِ وَٱلْعُدْوَٰنِ وَإِن يَأْتُوكُمْ أُسَـٰرَىٰ تُفَـٰدُوهُمْ وَهُوَ مُحَرَّمٌ عَلَيْكُمْ إِخْرَاجُهُمْ ۚ أَفَتُؤْمِنُونَ بِبَعْضِ ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ وَتَكْفُرُونَ بِبَعْضٍ ۚ فَمَا جَزَآءُ مَن يَفْعَلُ ذَٰلِكَ مِنكُمْ إِلَّا خِزْىٌ فِى ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنْيَا ۖ وَيَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ يُرَدُّونَ إِلَىٰٓ أَشَدِّ ٱلْعَذَابِ ۗ وَمَا ٱللَّهُ بِغَـٰفِلٍ عَمَّا تَعْمَلُونَ

Transliteration thumma antum hāulāi taqtulūna anfusakum watukh'rijūna farīqan minkum min diyārihim taẓāharūna ʿalayhim bil-ith'mi wal-ʿud'wāni wa-in yatūkum usārā tufādūhum wahuwa muḥarramun ʿalaykum ikh'rājuhum afatu'minūna bibaʿḍi l-kitābi watakfurūna bibaʿḍin famā jazāu man yafʿalu dhālika minkum illā khiz'yun fī l-ḥayati l-dun'yā wayawma l-qiyāmati yuraddūna ilā ashaddi l-ʿadhābi wamā l-lahu bighāfilin ʿammā taʿmalūna

English Then, you are those [same ones who are] killing one another and evicting a party of your people from their homes, cooperating against them in sin and aggression. And if they come to you as captives, you ransom them, although their eviction was forbidden to you. So do you believe in part of the Scripture and disbelieve in part? Then what is the recompense for those who do that among you except disgrace in worldly life; and on the Day of Resurrection they will be sent back to the severest of punishment. And Allāh is not unaware of what you do.

1. ثُمَّthummaThen
2. أَنتُمْantumyou
3. هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِhāulāi(are) those
4. تَقْتُلُونَtaqtulūna(who) kill
5. أَنفُسَكُمْanfusakumyourselves
6. وَتُخْرِجُونَwatukh'rijūnaand evict
7. فَرِيقًۭاfarīqana party
8. مِّنكُمminkumof you
9. مِّنminfrom
10. دِيَـٰرِهِمْdiyārihimtheir homes
11. تَظَـٰهَرُونَtaẓāharūnayou support one another
12. عَلَيْهِمʿalayhimagainst them
13. بِٱلْإِثْمِbil-ith'miin sin
14. وَٱلْعُدْوَٰنِwal-ʿud'wāniand [the] transgression
15. وَإِنwa-inAnd if
16. يَأْتُوكُمْyatūkumthey come to you
17. أُسَـٰرَىٰusārā(as) captives
18. تُفَـٰدُوهُمْtufādūhumyou ransom them
19. وَهُوَwahuwawhile it
20. مُحَرَّمٌmuḥarramun(was) forbidden
21. عَلَيْكُمْʿalaykumto you
22. إِخْرَاجُهُمْ ۚikh'rājuhumtheir eviction
23. أَفَتُؤْمِنُونَafatu'minūnaSo do you believe
24. بِبَعْضِbibaʿḍiin part (of)
25. ٱلْكِتَـٰبِl-kitābithe Book
26. وَتَكْفُرُونَwatakfurūnaand disbelieve
27. بِبَعْضٍۢ ۚbibaʿḍinin part
28. فَمَاfamāThen what
29. جَزَآءُjazāu(should be the) recompense
30. مَنman(for the one) who
31. يَفْعَلُyafʿaludoes
32. ذَٰلِكَdhālikathat
33. مِنكُمْminkumamong you
34. إِلَّاillāexcept
35. خِزْىٌۭkhiz'yundisgrace
36. فِىfīin
37. ٱلْحَيَوٰةِl-ḥayatithe life
38. ٱلدُّنْيَا ۖl-dun'yā(of) the world
39. وَيَوْمَwayawmaand (on the) Day
40. ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِl-qiyāmatiof [the] Resurrection
41. يُرَدُّونَyuraddūnathey will be sent back
42. إِلَىٰٓilāto
43. أَشَدِّashaddi(the) most severe
44. ٱلْعَذَابِ ۗl-ʿadhābipunishment
45. وَمَاwamāAnd not
46. ٱللَّهُl-lahu(is) Allah
47. بِغَـٰفِلٍbighāfilinunaware
48. عَمَّاʿammāof what
49. تَعْمَلُونَtaʿmalūnayou do

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱشْتَرَوُا۟ ٱلْحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنْيَا بِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ ۖ فَلَا يُخَفَّفُ عَنْهُمُ ٱلْعَذَابُ وَلَا هُمْ يُنصَرُونَ

Transliteration ulāika alladhīna ish'tarawū l-ḥayata l-dun'yā bil-ākhirati falā yukhaffafu ʿanhumu l-ʿadhābu walā hum yunṣarūna

English Those are the ones who have bought the life of this world [in exchange] for the Hereafter, so the punishment will not be lightened for them, nor will they be aided.

1. أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَulāikaThose
2. ٱلَّذِينَalladhīna(are) the ones who
3. ٱشْتَرَوُا۟ish'tarawūbought
4. ٱلْحَيَوٰةَl-ḥayatathe life
5. ٱلدُّنْيَاl-dun'yā(of) the world
6. بِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ ۖbil-ākhiratifor the Hereafter
7. فَلَاfalāso not
8. يُخَفَّفُyukhaffafuwill be lightened
9. عَنْهُمُʿanhumufor them
10. ٱلْعَذَابُl-ʿadhābuthe punishment
11. وَلَاwalāand not
12. هُمْhumthey
13. يُنصَرُونَyunṣarūnawill be helped

وَلَقَدْ ءَاتَيْنَا مُوسَى ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ وَقَفَّيْنَا مِنۢ بَعْدِهِۦ بِٱلرُّسُلِ ۖ وَءَاتَيْنَا عِيسَى ٱبْنَ مَرْيَمَ ٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتِ وَأَيَّدْنَـٰهُ بِرُوحِ ٱلْقُدُسِ ۗ أَفَكُلَّمَا جَآءَكُمْ رَسُولٌۢ بِمَا لَا تَهْوَىٰٓ أَنفُسُكُمُ ٱسْتَكْبَرْتُمْ فَفَرِيقًا كَذَّبْتُمْ وَفَرِيقًا تَقْتُلُونَ

Transliteration walaqad ātaynā mūsā l-kitāba waqaffaynā min baʿdihi bil-rusuli waātaynā ʿīsā ib'na maryama l-bayināti wa-ayyadnāhu birūḥi l-qudusi afakullamā jāakum rasūlun bimā lā tahwā anfusukumu is'takbartum fafarīqan kadhabtum wafarīqan taqtulūna

English And We did certainly give Moses the Scripture [i.e., the Torah] and followed up after him with messengers. And We gave Jesus, the son of Mary, clear proofs and supported him with the Pure Spirit [i.e., the angel Gabriel]. But is it [not] that every time a messenger came to you, [O Children of Israel], with what your souls did not desire, you were arrogant? And a party [of messengers] you denied and another party you killed.

1. وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd indeed
2. ءَاتَيْنَاātaynāWe gave
3. مُوسَىmūsāMusa
4. ٱلْكِتَـٰبَl-kitābathe Book
5. وَقَفَّيْنَاwaqaffaynāand We followed up
6. مِنۢminfrom
7. بَعْدِهِۦbaʿdihiafter him
8. بِٱلرُّسُلِ ۖbil-rusuliwith [the] Messengers
9. وَءَاتَيْنَاwaātaynāAnd We gave
10. عِيسَىʿīsāIsa
11. ٱبْنَib'na(the) son
12. مَرْيَمَmaryama(of) Maryam
13. ٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتِl-bayināti[the] clear signs
14. وَأَيَّدْنَـٰهُwa-ayyadnāhuand We supported him
15. بِرُوحِbirūḥi(with)
16. ٱلْقُدُسِ ۗl-qudusithe Holy Spirit
17. أَفَكُلَّمَاafakullamāIs it (not) so (that) whenever
18. جَآءَكُمْjāakumcame to you
19. رَسُولٌۢrasūluna Messenger
20. بِمَاbimāwith what
21. لَاlā(does) not
22. تَهْوَىٰٓtahwādesire
23. أَنفُسُكُمُanfusukumuyourselves
24. ٱسْتَكْبَرْتُمْis'takbartumyou acted arrogantly
25. فَفَرِيقًۭاfafarīqanSo a party
26. كَذَّبْتُمْkadhabtumyou denied
27. وَفَرِيقًۭاwafarīqanand a party
28. تَقْتُلُونَtaqtulūnayou kill(ed)

وَقَالُوا۟ قُلُوبُنَا غُلْفٌۢ ۚ بَل لَّعَنَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ بِكُفْرِهِمْ فَقَلِيلًا مَّا يُؤْمِنُونَ

Transliteration waqālū qulūbunā ghul'fun bal laʿanahumu l-lahu bikuf'rihim faqalīlan mā yu'minūna

English And they said, "Our hearts are wrapped." But, [in fact], Allāh has cursed them for their disbelief, so little is it that they believe.

1. وَقَالُوا۟waqālūAnd they said
2. قُلُوبُنَاqulūbunāOur hearts
3. غُلْفٌۢ ۚghul'fun(are) wrapped
4. بَلbalNay
5. لَّعَنَهُمُlaʿanahumuhas cursed them
6. ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
7. بِكُفْرِهِمْbikuf'rihimfor their disbelief
8. فَقَلِيلًۭاfaqalīlanso little
9. مَّاmā(is) what
10. يُؤْمِنُونَyu'minūnathey believe

وَلَمَّا جَآءَهُمْ كِتَـٰبٌ مِّنْ عِندِ ٱللَّهِ مُصَدِّقٌ لِّمَا مَعَهُمْ وَكَانُوا۟ مِن قَبْلُ يَسْتَفْتِحُونَ عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ فَلَمَّا جَآءَهُم مَّا عَرَفُوا۟ كَفَرُوا۟ بِهِۦ ۚ فَلَعْنَةُ ٱللَّهِ عَلَى ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

Transliteration walammā jāahum kitābun min ʿindi l-lahi muṣaddiqun limā maʿahum wakānū min qablu yastaftiḥūna ʿalā alladhīna kafarū falammā jāahum mā ʿarafū kafarū bihi falaʿnatu l-lahi ʿalā l-kāfirīna

English And when there came to them a Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] from Allāh confirming that which was with them - although before they used to pray for victory against those who disbelieved - but [then] when there came to them that which they recognized, they disbelieved in it; so the curse of Allāh will be upon the disbelievers.

1. وَلَمَّاwalammāAnd when
2. جَآءَهُمْjāahumcame to them
3. كِتَـٰبٌۭkitābuna Book
4. مِّنْminof
5. عِندِʿindifrom
6. ٱللَّهِl-lahiAllah
7. مُصَدِّقٌۭmuṣaddiqunconfirming
8. لِّمَاlimāwhat (was)
9. مَعَهُمْmaʿahumwith them
10. وَكَانُوا۟wakānūthough they used to
11. مِنminfrom
12. قَبْلُqablubefore
13. يَسْتَفْتِحُونَyastaftiḥūna(that), pray for victory
14. عَلَىʿalāover
15. ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
16. كَفَرُوا۟kafarūdisbelieved
17. فَلَمَّاfalammāthen when
18. جَآءَهُمjāahumcame to them
19. مَّاmāwhat
20. عَرَفُوا۟ʿarafūthey recognized
21. كَفَرُوا۟kafarūthey disbelieved
22. بِهِۦ ۚbihiin it
23. فَلَعْنَةُfalaʿnatuSo (the) curse
24. ٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allah
25. عَلَىʿalā(is) on
26. ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَl-kāfirīnathe disbelievers

بِئْسَمَا ٱشْتَرَوْا۟ بِهِۦٓ أَنفُسَهُمْ أَن يَكْفُرُوا۟ بِمَآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ بَغْيًا أَن يُنَزِّلَ ٱللَّهُ مِن فَضْلِهِۦ عَلَىٰ مَن يَشَآءُ مِنْ عِبَادِهِۦ ۖ فَبَآءُو بِغَضَبٍ عَلَىٰ غَضَبٍ ۚ وَلِلْكَـٰفِرِينَ عَذَابٌ مُّهِينٌ

Transliteration bi'samā ish'taraw bihi anfusahum an yakfurū bimā anzala l-lahu baghyan an yunazzila l-lahu min faḍlihi ʿalā man yashāu min ʿibādihi fabāū bighaḍabin ʿalā ghaḍabin walil'kāfirīna ʿadhābun muhīnun

English How wretched is that for which they sold themselves - that they would disbelieve in what Allāh has revealed through [their] outrage that Allāh would send down His favor upon whom He wills from among His servants. So they returned having [earned] wrath upon wrath. And for the disbelievers is a humiliating punishment.

1. بِئْسَمَاbi'samāEvil (is) that
2. ٱشْتَرَوْا۟ish'taraw(for) which they have sold
3. بِهِۦٓbihiwith
4. أَنفُسَهُمْanfusahumthemselves
5. أَنanthat
6. يَكْفُرُوا۟yakfurūthey disbelieve
7. بِمَآbimāin what
8. أَنزَلَanzalahas revealed
9. ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
10. بَغْيًاbaghyangrudging
11. أَنanthat
12. يُنَزِّلَyunazzilasends down
13. ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
14. مِنminof
15. فَضْلِهِۦfaḍlihiHis Grace
16. عَلَىٰʿalāon
17. مَنmanwhom
18. يَشَآءُyashāuHe wills
19. مِنْminfrom
20. عِبَادِهِۦ ۖʿibādihiHis servants
21. فَبَآءُوfabāūSo they have drawn (on themselves)
22. بِغَضَبٍbighaḍabinwrath
23. عَلَىٰʿalāupon
24. غَضَبٍۢ ۚghaḍabinwrath
25. وَلِلْكَـٰفِرِينَwalil'kāfirīnaAnd for the disbelievers
26. عَذَابٌۭʿadhābun(is) a punishment
27. مُّهِينٌۭmuhīnunhumiliating

وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ ءَامِنُوا۟ بِمَآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ قَالُوا۟ نُؤْمِنُ بِمَآ أُنزِلَ عَلَيْنَا وَيَكْفُرُونَ بِمَا وَرَآءَهُۥ وَهُوَ ٱلْحَقُّ مُصَدِّقًا لِّمَا مَعَهُمْ ۗ قُلْ فَلِمَ تَقْتُلُونَ أَنۢبِيَآءَ ٱللَّهِ مِن قَبْلُ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ

Transliteration wa-idhā qīla lahum āminū bimā anzala l-lahu qālū nu'minu bimā unzila ʿalaynā wayakfurūna bimā warāahu wahuwa l-ḥaqu muṣaddiqan limā maʿahum qul falima taqtulūna anbiyāa l-lahi min qablu in kuntum mu'minīna

English And when it is said to them, "Believe in what Allāh has revealed," they say, "We believe [only] in what was revealed to us." And they disbelieve in what came after it, while it is the truth confirming that which is with them. Say, "Then why did you kill the prophets of Allāh before, if you are [indeed] believers?"

1. وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd when
2. قِيلَqīlait is said
3. لَهُمْlahumto them
4. ءَامِنُوا۟āminūBelieve
5. بِمَآbimāin what
6. أَنزَلَanzalahas revealed
7. ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
8. قَالُوا۟qālūthey say
9. نُؤْمِنُnu'minuWe believe
10. بِمَآbimāin what
11. أُنزِلَunzilawas revealed
12. عَلَيْنَاʿalaynāto us
13. وَيَكْفُرُونَwayakfurūnaAnd they disbelieve
14. بِمَاbimāin what
15. وَرَآءَهُۥwarāahu(is) besides it
16. وَهُوَwahuwawhile it
17. ٱلْحَقُّl-ḥaqu(is) the truth
18. مُصَدِّقًۭاmuṣaddiqanconfirming
19. لِّمَاlimāwhat
20. مَعَهُمْ ۗmaʿahum(is) with them
21. قُلْqulSay
22. فَلِمَfalimaThen why
23. تَقْتُلُونَtaqtulūna(did) you kill
24. أَنۢبِيَآءَanbiyāa(the) Prophets
25. ٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allah
26. مِنminfrom
27. قَبْلُqablubefore
28. إِنinif
29. كُنتُمkuntumyou were
30. مُّؤْمِنِينَmu'minīnabelievers

۞ وَلَقَدْ جَآءَكُم مُّوسَىٰ بِٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتِ ثُمَّ ٱتَّخَذْتُمُ ٱلْعِجْلَ مِنۢ بَعْدِهِۦ وَأَنتُمْ ظَـٰلِمُونَ

Transliteration walaqad jāakum mūsā bil-bayināti thumma ittakhadhtumu l-ʿij'la min baʿdihi wa-antum ẓālimūna

English And Moses had certainly brought you clear proofs. Then you took the calf [in worship] after that, while you were wrongdoers.

1. ۞ وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd indeed
2. جَآءَكُمjāakumcame to you
3. مُّوسَىٰmūsāMusa
4. بِٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتِbil-bayinātiwith [the] clear signs
5. ثُمَّthummathen
6. ٱتَّخَذْتُمُittakhadhtumuyou took
7. ٱلْعِجْلَl-ʿij'lathe calf
8. مِنۢminfrom
9. بَعْدِهِۦbaʿdihiafter him
10. وَأَنتُمْwa-antumand you
11. ظَـٰلِمُونَẓālimūna(were) wrongdoers

وَإِذْ أَخَذْنَا مِيثَـٰقَكُمْ وَرَفَعْنَا فَوْقَكُمُ ٱلطُّورَ خُذُوا۟ مَآ ءَاتَيْنَـٰكُم بِقُوَّةٍ وَٱسْمَعُوا۟ ۖ قَالُوا۟ سَمِعْنَا وَعَصَيْنَا وَأُشْرِبُوا۟ فِى قُلُوبِهِمُ ٱلْعِجْلَ بِكُفْرِهِمْ ۚ قُلْ بِئْسَمَا يَأْمُرُكُم بِهِۦٓ إِيمَـٰنُكُمْ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ

Transliteration wa-idh akhadhnā mīthāqakum warafaʿnā fawqakumu l-ṭūra khudhū mā ātaynākum biquwwatin wa-is'maʿū qālū samiʿ'nā waʿaṣaynā wa-ush'ribū fī qulūbihimu l-ʿij'la bikuf'rihim qul bi'samā yamurukum bihi īmānukum in kuntum mu'minīna

English And [recall] when We took your covenant and raised over you the mount, [saying], "Take what We have given you with determination and listen." They said [instead], "We hear and disobey." And their hearts absorbed [the worship of] the calf because of their disbelief. Say, "How wretched is that which your faith enjoins upon you, if you should be believers."

1. وَإِذْwa-idhAnd when
2. أَخَذْنَاakhadhnāWe took
3. مِيثَـٰقَكُمْmīthāqakumyour covenant
4. وَرَفَعْنَاwarafaʿnāand We raised
5. فَوْقَكُمُfawqakumuover you
6. ٱلطُّورَl-ṭūrathe mount
7. خُذُوا۟khudhūHold
8. مَآmāwhat
9. ءَاتَيْنَـٰكُمātaynākumWe gave you
10. بِقُوَّةٍۢbiquwwatinwith firmness
11. وَٱسْمَعُوا۟ ۖwa-is'maʿūand listen
12. قَالُوا۟qālūThey said
13. سَمِعْنَاsamiʿ'nāWe heard
14. وَعَصَيْنَاwaʿaṣaynāand we disobeyed
15. وَأُشْرِبُوا۟wa-ush'ribūAnd they were made to drink
16. فِىfīin
17. قُلُوبِهِمُqulūbihimutheir hearts
18. ٱلْعِجْلَl-ʿij'la(love of) the calf
19. بِكُفْرِهِمْ ۚbikuf'rihimbecause of their disbelief
20. قُلْqulSay
21. بِئْسَمَاbi'samāEvil (is) that
22. يَأْمُرُكُمyamurukumorders you (to do) it
23. بِهِۦٓbihiwith
24. إِيمَـٰنُكُمْīmānukumyour faith
25. إِنinif
26. كُنتُمkuntumyou are
27. مُّؤْمِنِينَmu'minīnabelievers

قُلْ إِن كَانَتْ لَكُمُ ٱلدَّارُ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةُ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ خَالِصَةً مِّن دُونِ ٱلنَّاسِ فَتَمَنَّوُا۟ ٱلْمَوْتَ إِن كُنتُمْ صَـٰدِقِينَ

Transliteration qul in kānat lakumu l-dāru l-ākhiratu ʿinda l-lahi khāliṣatan min dūni l-nāsi fatamannawū l-mawta in kuntum ṣādiqīna

English Say, [O Muḥammad], "If the home of the Hereafter with Allāh is for you alone and not the [other] people, then wish for death, if you should be truthful."

1. قُلْqulSay
2. إِنinIf
3. كَانَتْkānatis
4. لَكُمُlakumufor you
5. ٱلدَّارُl-dāruthe home
6. ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةُl-ākhiratu(of) the Hereafter
7. عِندَʿindawith
8. ٱللَّهِl-lahiAllah
9. خَالِصَةًۭkhāliṣatanexclusively
10. مِّنminfrom
11. دُونِdūniexcluding
12. ٱلنَّاسِl-nāsithe mankind
13. فَتَمَنَّوُا۟fatamannawūthen wish
14. ٱلْمَوْتَl-mawta(for) [the] death
15. إِنinif
16. كُنتُمْkuntumyou are
17. صَـٰدِقِينَṣādiqīnatruthful

وَلَن يَتَمَنَّوْهُ أَبَدًۢا بِمَا قَدَّمَتْ أَيْدِيهِمْ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌۢ بِٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

Transliteration walan yatamannawhu abadan bimā qaddamat aydīhim wal-lahu ʿalīmun bil-ẓālimīna

English But never will they wish for it, ever, because of what their hands have put forth. And Allāh is Knowing of the wrongdoers.

1. وَلَنwalanAnd never (will)
2. يَتَمَنَّوْهُyatamannawhuthey wish for it
3. أَبَدًۢاabadanever
4. بِمَاbimābecause
5. قَدَّمَتْqaddamat(of what) sent ahead
6. أَيْدِيهِمْ ۗaydīhimtheir hands
7. وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allah
8. عَلِيمٌۢʿalīmun(is) All-Knower
9. بِٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَbil-ẓālimīnaof the wrongdoers

وَلَتَجِدَنَّهُمْ أَحْرَصَ ٱلنَّاسِ عَلَىٰ حَيَوٰةٍ وَمِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَشْرَكُوا۟ ۚ يَوَدُّ أَحَدُهُمْ لَوْ يُعَمَّرُ أَلْفَ سَنَةٍ وَمَا هُوَ بِمُزَحْزِحِهِۦ مِنَ ٱلْعَذَابِ أَن يُعَمَّرَ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ بَصِيرٌۢ بِمَا يَعْمَلُونَ

Transliteration walatajidannahum aḥraṣa l-nāsi ʿalā ḥayatin wamina alladhīna ashrakū yawaddu aḥaduhum law yuʿammaru alfa sanatin wamā huwa bimuzaḥziḥihi mina l-ʿadhābi an yuʿammara wal-lahu baṣīrun bimā yaʿmalūna

English And you will surely find them the most greedy of people for life - [even] more than those who associate others with Allāh. One of them wishes that he could be granted life a thousand years, but it would not remove him in the least from the [coming] punishment that he should be granted life. And Allāh is Seeing of what they do.

1. وَلَتَجِدَنَّهُمْwalatajidannahumAnd surely you will find them
2. أَحْرَصَaḥraṣa(the) most greedy
3. ٱلنَّاسِl-nāsi(of) [the] mankind
4. عَلَىٰʿalāfor
5. حَيَوٰةٍۢḥayatinlife
6. وَمِنَwaminaand (greedier) than
7. ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
8. أَشْرَكُوا۟ ۚashrakūassociate[d] partners (with Allah)
9. يَوَدُّyawadduLoves
10. أَحَدُهُمْaḥaduhum(each) one of them
11. لَوْlawif
12. يُعَمَّرُyuʿammaruhe could be granted a life
13. أَلْفَalfa(of) a thousand
14. سَنَةٍۢsanatinyear(s)
15. وَمَاwamāBut not
16. هُوَhuwait
17. بِمُزَحْزِحِهِۦbimuzaḥziḥihi(will) remove him
18. مِنَminafrom
19. ٱلْعَذَابِl-ʿadhābithe punishment
20. أَنanthat
21. يُعَمَّرَ ۗyuʿammarahe should be granted life
22. وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allah
23. بَصِيرٌۢbaṣīrun(is) All-Seer
24. بِمَاbimāof what
25. يَعْمَلُونَyaʿmalūnathey do

قُلْ مَن كَانَ عَدُوًّا لِّجِبْرِيلَ فَإِنَّهُۥ نَزَّلَهُۥ عَلَىٰ قَلْبِكَ بِإِذْنِ ٱللَّهِ مُصَدِّقًا لِّمَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ وَهُدًى وَبُشْرَىٰ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

Transliteration qul man kāna ʿaduwwan lijib'rīla fa-innahu nazzalahu ʿalā qalbika bi-idh'ni l-lahi muṣaddiqan limā bayna yadayhi wahudan wabush'rā lil'mu'minīna

English Say, "Whoever is an enemy to Gabriel - it is [none but] he who has brought it [i.e., the Qur’ān] down upon your heart, [O Muḥammad], by permission of Allāh, confirming that which was before it and as guidance and good tidings for the believers."

1. قُلْqulSay
2. مَنmanWhoever
3. كَانَkānais
4. عَدُوًّۭاʿaduwwanan enemy
5. لِّجِبْرِيلَlijib'rīlato Jibreel
6. فَإِنَّهُۥfa-innahuthen indeed he
7. نَزَّلَهُۥnazzalahubrought it down
8. عَلَىٰʿalāon
9. قَلْبِكَqalbikayour heart
10. بِإِذْنِbi-idh'niby (the) permission
11. ٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allah
12. مُصَدِّقًۭاmuṣaddiqanconfirming
13. لِّمَاlimāwhat
14. بَيْنَbayna(was)
15. يَدَيْهِyadayhibefore it
16. وَهُدًۭىwahudanand a guidance
17. وَبُشْرَىٰwabush'rāand glad tiding(s)
18. لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَlil'mu'minīnafor the believers

مَن كَانَ عَدُوًّا لِّلَّهِ وَمَلَـٰٓئِكَتِهِۦ وَرُسُلِهِۦ وَجِبْرِيلَ وَمِيكَىٰلَ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَدُوٌّ لِّلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

Transliteration man kāna ʿaduwwan lillahi wamalāikatihi warusulihi wajib'rīla wamīkāla fa-inna l-laha ʿaduwwun lil'kāfirīna

English Whoever is an enemy to Allāh and His angels and His messengers and Gabriel and Michael - then indeed, Allāh is an enemy to the disbelievers.

1. مَنmanWhoever
2. كَانَkānais
3. عَدُوًّۭاʿaduwwanan enemy
4. لِّلَّهِlillahi(to) Allah
5. وَمَلَـٰٓئِكَتِهِۦwamalāikatihiand His Angels
6. وَرُسُلِهِۦwarusulihiand His Messengers
7. وَجِبْرِيلَwajib'rīlaand Jibreel
8. وَمِيكَىٰلَwamīkālaand Meekael
9. فَإِنَّfa-innathen indeed
10. ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
11. عَدُوٌّۭʿaduwwun(is) an enemy
12. لِّلْكَـٰفِرِينَlil'kāfirīnato the disbelievers

وَلَقَدْ أَنزَلْنَآ إِلَيْكَ ءَايَـٰتٍۭ بَيِّنَـٰتٍ ۖ وَمَا يَكْفُرُ بِهَآ إِلَّا ٱلْفَـٰسِقُونَ

Transliteration walaqad anzalnā ilayka āyātin bayyinātin wamā yakfuru bihā illā l-fāsiqūna

English And We have certainly revealed to you verses [which are] clear proofs, and no one would deny them except the defiantly disobedient.

1. وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd indeed
2. أَنزَلْنَآanzalnāWe revealed
3. إِلَيْكَilaykato you
4. ءَايَـٰتٍۭāyātinVerses
5. بَيِّنَـٰتٍۢ ۖbayyinātinclear
6. وَمَاwamāand not
7. يَكْفُرُyakfurudisbelieves
8. بِهَآbihāin them
9. إِلَّاillāexcept
10. ٱلْفَـٰسِقُونَl-fāsiqūnathe defiantly disobedient

أَوَكُلَّمَا عَـٰهَدُوا۟ عَهْدًا نَّبَذَهُۥ فَرِيقٌ مِّنْهُم ۚ بَلْ أَكْثَرُهُمْ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ

Transliteration awakullamā ʿāhadū ʿahdan nabadhahu farīqun min'hum bal aktharuhum lā yu'minūna

English Is it not [true] that every time they took a covenant a party of them threw it away? But, [in fact], most of them do not believe.

1. أَوَكُلَّمَاawakullamāAnd is (it not that) whenever
2. عَـٰهَدُوا۟ʿāhadūthey took
3. عَهْدًۭاʿahdana covenant
4. نَّبَذَهُۥnabadhahuthrew it away
5. فَرِيقٌۭfarīquna party
6. مِّنْهُم ۚmin'humof them
7. بَلْbalNay
8. أَكْثَرُهُمْaktharuhummost of them
9. لَاlā(do) not
10. يُؤْمِنُونَyu'minūnabelieve

وَلَمَّا جَآءَهُمْ رَسُولٌ مِّنْ عِندِ ٱللَّهِ مُصَدِّقٌ لِّمَا مَعَهُمْ نَبَذَ فَرِيقٌ مِّنَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ كِتَـٰبَ ٱللَّهِ وَرَآءَ ظُهُورِهِمْ كَأَنَّهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ

Transliteration walammā jāahum rasūlun min ʿindi l-lahi muṣaddiqun limā maʿahum nabadha farīqun mina alladhīna ūtū l-kitāba kitāba l-lahi warāa ẓuhūrihim ka-annahum lā yaʿlamūna

English And when a messenger from Allāh came to them confirming that which was with them, a party of those who had been given the Scripture threw the Scripture of Allāh [i.e., the Torah] behind their backs as if they did not know [what it contained].

1. وَلَمَّاwalammāAnd when
2. جَآءَهُمْjāahumcame to them
3. رَسُولٌۭrasūluna Messenger
4. مِّنْmin(of)
5. عِندِʿindifrom
6. ٱللَّهِl-lahiAllah
7. مُصَدِّقٌۭmuṣaddiqunconfirming
8. لِّمَاlimāwhat
9. مَعَهُمْmaʿahum(was) with them
10. نَبَذَnabadhathrew away
11. فَرِيقٌۭfarīquna party
12. مِّنَminaof
13. ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
14. أُوتُوا۟ūtūwere given
15. ٱلْكِتَـٰبَl-kitābathe Book
16. كِتَـٰبَkitāba(the) Book
17. ٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allah
18. وَرَآءَwarāabehind
19. ظُهُورِهِمْẓuhūrihimtheir backs
20. كَأَنَّهُمْka-annahumas if they
21. لَاlā(do) not
22. يَعْلَمُونَyaʿlamūnaknow

وَٱتَّبَعُوا۟ مَا تَتْلُوا۟ ٱلشَّيَـٰطِينُ عَلَىٰ مُلْكِ سُلَيْمَـٰنَ ۖ وَمَا كَفَرَ سُلَيْمَـٰنُ وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱلشَّيَـٰطِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ يُعَلِّمُونَ ٱلنَّاسَ ٱلسِّحْرَ وَمَآ أُنزِلَ عَلَى ٱلْمَلَكَيْنِ بِبَابِلَ هَـٰرُوتَ وَمَـٰرُوتَ ۚ وَمَا يُعَلِّمَانِ مِنْ أَحَدٍ حَتَّىٰ يَقُولَآ إِنَّمَا نَحْنُ فِتْنَةٌ فَلَا تَكْفُرْ ۖ فَيَتَعَلَّمُونَ مِنْهُمَا مَا يُفَرِّقُونَ بِهِۦ بَيْنَ ٱلْمَرْءِ وَزَوْجِهِۦ ۚ وَمَا هُم بِضَآرِّينَ بِهِۦ مِنْ أَحَدٍ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ وَيَتَعَلَّمُونَ مَا يَضُرُّهُمْ وَلَا يَنفَعُهُمْ ۚ وَلَقَدْ عَلِمُوا۟ لَمَنِ ٱشْتَرَىٰهُ مَا لَهُۥ فِى ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ مِنْ خَلَـٰقٍ ۚ وَلَبِئْسَ مَا شَرَوْا۟ بِهِۦٓ أَنفُسَهُمْ ۚ لَوْ كَانُوا۟ يَعْلَمُونَ

Transliteration wa-ittabaʿū mā tatlū l-shayāṭīnu ʿalā mul'ki sulaymāna wamā kafara sulaymānu walākinna l-shayāṭīna kafarū yuʿallimūna l-nāsa l-siḥ'ra wamā unzila ʿalā l-malakayni bibābila hārūta wamārūta wamā yuʿallimāni min aḥadin ḥattā yaqūlā innamā naḥnu fit'natun falā takfur fayataʿallamūna min'humā mā yufarriqūna bihi bayna l-mari wazawjihi wamā hum biḍārrīna bihi min aḥadin illā bi-idh'ni l-lahi wayataʿallamūna mā yaḍurruhum walā yanfaʿuhum walaqad ʿalimū lamani ish'tarāhu mā lahu fī l-ākhirati min khalāqin walabi'sa mā sharaw bihi anfusahum law kānū yaʿlamūna

English And they followed [instead] what the devils had recited during the reign of Solomon. It was not Solomon who disbelieved, but the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic and that which was revealed to the two angels at Babylon, Hārūt and Mārūt. But they [i.e., the two angels] do not teach anyone unless they say, "We are a trial, so do not disbelieve [by practicing magic]." And [yet] they learn from them that by which they cause separation between a man and his wife. But they do not harm anyone through it except by permission of Allāh. And they [i.e., people] learn what harms them and does not benefit them. But they [i.e., the Children of Israel] certainly knew that whoever purchased it [i.e., magic] would not have in the Hereafter any share. And wretched is that for which they sold themselves, if they only knew.

1. وَٱتَّبَعُوا۟wa-ittabaʿūAnd they followed
2. مَاmāwhat
3. تَتْلُوا۟tatlūrecite(d)
4. ٱلشَّيَـٰطِينُl-shayāṭīnuthe devils
5. عَلَىٰʿalāover
6. مُلْكِmul'ki(the) kingdom
7. سُلَيْمَـٰنَ ۖsulaymāna(of) Sulaiman
8. وَمَاwamāAnd not
9. كَفَرَkafaradisbelieved
10. سُلَيْمَـٰنُsulaymānuSulaiman
11. وَلَـٰكِنَّwalākinna[and] but
12. ٱلشَّيَـٰطِينَl-shayāṭīnathe devils
13. كَفَرُوا۟kafarūdisbelieved
14. يُعَلِّمُونَyuʿallimūnathey teach
15. ٱلنَّاسَl-nāsathe people
16. ٱلسِّحْرَl-siḥ'ra[the] magic
17. وَمَآwamāand what
18. أُنزِلَunzilawas sent down
19. عَلَىʿalāto
20. ٱلْمَلَكَيْنِl-malakaynithe two angels
21. بِبَابِلَbibābilain Babylon
22. هَـٰرُوتَhārūtaHarut
23. وَمَـٰرُوتَ ۚwamārūtaand Marut
24. وَمَاwamāAnd not
25. يُعَلِّمَانِyuʿallimānithey both teach
26. مِنْminany
27. أَحَدٍaḥadinone
28. حَتَّىٰḥattāunless
29. يَقُولَآyaqūlāthey [both] say
30. إِنَّمَاinnamāOnly
31. نَحْنُnaḥnuwe
32. فِتْنَةٌۭfit'natun(are) a trial
33. فَلَاfalāso (do) not
34. تَكْفُرْ ۖtakfurdisbelieve
35. فَيَتَعَلَّمُونَfayataʿallamūnaBut they learn
36. مِنْهُمَاmin'humāfrom those two
37. مَاmāwhat
38. يُفَرِّقُونَyufarriqūna[they] causes separation
39. بِهِۦbihiwith it
40. بَيْنَbaynabetween
41. ٱلْمَرْءِl-marithe man
42. وَزَوْجِهِۦ ۚwazawjihiand his spouse
43. وَمَاwamāAnd not
44. هُمhumthey (could)
45. بِضَآرِّينَbiḍārrīnaat all [be those who] harm
46. بِهِۦbihiwith it
47. مِنْminany
48. أَحَدٍaḥadinone
49. إِلَّاillāexcept
50. بِإِذْنِbi-idh'niby permission
51. ٱللَّهِ ۚl-lahi(of) Allah
52. وَيَتَعَلَّمُونَwayataʿallamūnaAnd they learn
53. مَاmāwhat
54. يَضُرُّهُمْyaḍurruhumharms them
55. وَلَاwalāand not
56. يَنفَعُهُمْ ۚyanfaʿuhumprofits them
57. وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd indeed
58. عَلِمُوا۟ʿalimūthey knew
59. لَمَنِlamanithat whoever
60. ٱشْتَرَىٰهُish'tarāhubuys it
61. مَاmānot
62. لَهُۥlahufor him
63. فِىfīin
64. ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِl-ākhiratithe Hereafter
65. مِنْminany
66. خَلَـٰقٍۢ ۚkhalāqinshare
67. وَلَبِئْسَwalabi'saAnd surely evil
68. مَاmā(is) what
69. شَرَوْا۟sharawthey sold
70. بِهِۦٓbihiwith it
71. أَنفُسَهُمْ ۚanfusahumthemselves
72. لَوْlawif
73. كَانُوا۟kānūthey were
74. يَعْلَمُونَyaʿlamūna(to) know
